I think this video is my most watched of any I've made so far. Apparently a lot of people need to know this. Who da thunk?

While the wide belt sander is an excellent machine, but they are very costly to purchase.
A stroke sander can be used to accomplish the same thing, and is far less expensive.
The difference is that the wide belt sander can be used by less experienced people once it is set up.

True enough! I wish I could afford one for my home shop. That’s why I tell all my students to “be nice to the sander, love the sander, never be angry with the sander”.
It’s an irreplaceable machine for my classes.

I have see that it need air from a compressor with 75 to 80 psi. Ok fine but how much cfm does it need?

    • @milkydude3100
      @milkydude3100 Před 2 lety

You'll need a screw compressor, i have a Boge CL7 that does about 25cfm and that manages fine along with the rest of the workshop, a steady air supply is absolutely necessary and a normal piston compressor won't hack it

Nice video! But could you specify some details on buying a used sander like this one. What to look for and so on?

Some things you are looking for:
Make sure the rubber on the drive shaft is in good shape; flat and no grooves that will end up in your board.
Check that the emergency brake in the front and on the side function correctly.
Check the tracking of the belt as it goes left and right-I needed to turn up the air pressure a bit on that function to make sure it didn't track too far to one side.
Look at the white limiting knobs on either side of the belt-make sure they are straight and word correctly-if someone loads a belt wrong they can hyper extend the one on the left side or even break it off.
      Hope this helps.

The place i work at has a wide belt sander. One problem im having using the sander is ripples on the sanded surfaces, what is causing the problem?

@@paulyoder839 Worn platen or really bad problem would be worn rubber contact roller. Even if the roller is worn, you can lower the platen below the roller.

The place I work purchased a wide belt sander and it came with a 3phase connection, unfortunately after connecting all 3 phases it doesn’t come up, we reached out to the supplier and we were told it’s a phase error and we should switch the wires, we have done all possible combinations during connection, yet it won’t come up. The voltage regulator on the control panel comes on but the power doesn’t come on, do you have any suggestions for me?
    Thanks in anticipation

Unfortunately I am not the one that installed the unit. However, I have the information for the man that did. He comes in the shop anytime we have machinery problems. He is the BEST at what he does.

As an employee of a school district in Utah I don't have a lot of say over what they decide to purchase for my shop. That being said, I've used a number of other brands of sanders and really like the Powermatic. It is easy to use, easy to change belts, and fairly simple to tweak for getting a perfect, level surface. To get them you'll just need to go to an outlet store. Here, we have Timberline woodworking, Wurth Louis and Co, and one or two other outlets but you can simply buy them online from places like "woodworker.com" or "grizzly" or "rockler.com".
      Hope this helps

This whole time I thought everyone was using a wide belt sander rather than a planer.
I was so confused how everyone was affording these 10k industrial machines lmao
