Man I feel you! Working in cakes is the easy part but for some some reason some people make it really hard to continue … that’s why I’m thinking of getting a website for them to order through there and reduce the back and forth . It’s just hard to to give a price online when they are custom cakes
Man I hate seeing people take advantage of nice people. I’m looking into the cake business as well but I’m iffy because of people like this. I’ve seen other cake home businesses and they really recommend a contract and full payment a week prior of cake being delivered to ensure things like this don’t happen. I saw one person saying this works for them rather than just down payment. because if they only require down payment and then end up no showing or cancelling last minute then cake person ends up doing 100% of the work with 50% of the pay and that’s not fair. I agree. Also recommend a small basic website to refer clients. The more professional you conduct yourself the less likely people will take advantage of you. Good luck I love your cakes!
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m going to start selling cakes soon and I’ve heard so many stories about terrible customers. I’m planning on getting a down payment at least 2 weeks before and then having them pay in full 48 hours before pickup/delivery. Hopefully that’ll deter a lot of these scammers. Love you guys, I've been a home baker on the side of my full time EMT job for over 15 years, I make my own modeling chocolate for all my decorations, marshmellow fondant and icing and I am still horrible at pricing ... and people expect everything for nothing....and I do cookies, cakepops, cheesecake, pies and there have been several times I have wanted to give this up....

I had that same thing happened to me $250 birthday cake for her child, she tried to pay me with a check, she new I didn’t accept checks, she told me hold on to the check I’ll bring you cash after our party, so i trusted her she never brought the money back, she ignored my calls and text. After a week I took the check to the bank and come to find out that account had been closed for years. I had sold her cakes before in the past so i trusted her. But she knew exactly what she was doing, sadly after that I quit doing cakes. And I haven’t really done them since. I know exactly how y’all felt, I was making cakes as a side business to help my daughter pay her college tuition. Some people are truly mean. Love y’all’s content! So glad y’all are back!

I completely understand you guys. Work yourself to death, no break, and end up feeling like walking away. I am also a home based cake decorator and 2021 almost had me walked away. Unfortunately I ended up breaking my arm right before Christmas, which forced me to take a break. Although the situation is unfortunate, God had given me what I have been needing to do, time to rest. I pray that 2022 is better for you and anyone else who struggled in 2021 in this line of business.
Am glad you are back And we have to realize in this world hopefully there is better people than bad ones Don’t give up just because of one person

I make sure I get my money up front before I turn on my oven. People have no respect for our work. If they do not give me at least a two weeks notice entire payment is due. I learned my lesson taking orders n payment later. Last minute orders are $50 more.

Baking and cake decorating is a full time job that some people don't fully understand what it takes to bake and decorate. Godspeed! Keep your head up. And these things unfortunately happen for a reason, in my opinion. My husband ended up losing friends for $200 🙄 that person texted him almost every week, asked to borrow money, then stopped texting my husband after. Atleast now we don't have to worry about having fake friends you know.
And plus, me and husband are very nice people and this just made us realize that being too nice, isn't always the best thing to do😟

I started my business last year and I had to quit this year because people were mean and wanted everything free. I am professional pastry chef with culinary degree and I always worked in 5star restaurants and bakeries. I knew what I was doing when I started my business but just because i was starting a new business on my own, people were treating me like a trash. They loved my food but they wanted everything for free or cheap where it won't even cover my ingredients price just because I was starting my own business from home... people even told me that you should give at the price of Walmart cake because I don't have to pay extra for rent.I lost so much money, I had to shut down. I totally understand what you go through, it's tough. I love you guys videos, they are very informative. Good luck to you guys and lots of love ❤

You guys should invest in a cake safe. I have one and it keeps your cakes safe from damage while transporting.
I started making and selling cakes about two years ago and I have learned my lesson from other people stories. I’ve had two people call me after the party after they ate the cake saying it wasn’t good and I gave them half back but never again. I learned people do that after they spent all their money and then try to find ways to get money back.
I require 50% deposit and balance paid in full 2 days before order is due. I send a invoice through PayPal that says this and it also says no refunds , no exchanges. Sorry that happened to y’all , y’all are awesome!! Keep up the great work
I know of a bouncy house business that uses text and email contract when someone wants to schedule a bouncy or water slide from them. They send the text then the email and once the person responds it is a legal and binding contract. Both parties are then responsible. You can also do this. Create a standard contract for your orders and have a section to add what is customized on the order. This will protect u. Regardless if you work from home or if you are a small or large business, you deserve to get paid and protect your business. Don’t let people take advantage. Good luck.

I'm so sorry you've had to deal with cranky people! I've noticed that too with the pandemic especially as people started going back out again they were just grumpy! Making cakes is not easy and I'm sure taking orders is not easy. That's why I'm only doing it for my children's birthdays at this point 😂
Happened to me too, people saying didn’t like it to get their money back , I’ll ask for the cake and they will never bring it back , posting bad review on my page to make me look bad . people ordering and not paying on time (me prying that they do soon 🙏) I thought this happened only to me 😰.
I just can relate...i stopped making big cakes because of those issues..some people are too demanding...one wedding cake fell and it took all the confidence away..only do little médium cakes.

I really understand. That's why I don't deliver. I don't want to be responsible for that cake reaching the destination. Once you leave with it whatever happens is on you.
You should definitely always send a text message to the customer to pay through zelle before going outside and giving them the cake . Unless it’s cash of course ! I’ve learned through experience myself ! & being nice to an extent is ok !👍🏼 business is definitely business do not consider your customers as “friends” cause as soon as something goes wrong with the cake they’re bashing you !

You need to ask for a 50% deposit to secure the date and be paid in full 48 hours (at least) before the cake is due. This will weed out the scammers and guarantee this will never happen again. I've been caking for 36 years and not once (thankfully) have I never been paid. Good luck to you!
You guys should hire two assistants to help you out and help your business grow then hire someone to help you with delivering the cake orders and put the cakes in boxes to be packaged so they won’t fall God bless you guys

I always ask for a 50% non refundable Deposit to book an order or full payment. If they pay half, the rest has to be paid before pickup…. If not, there’s no cake. I had someone order a cake from me and never came to pick it up. I learned my lesson so that’s why I always ask for deposits. So sorry this happened to you!
This happened to me!!
I had a client who came back to me and I can acknowledge that I was 10 minutes late for her order BUT after 10 minutes I let her know that her order was ready and she left me on seen. I was so upset because it’s so much he’s working & effort we put to make someone happy and that’s my only income as well, I was a little upset because it’s not fair when spend that much time and are left on seen but thankfully I have many clients that came through and bought a slice of the order 😅
Won’t happen again tho because I took the last minute order without a deposit (which never happens) but I let it side since she’s bought from me plenty times before but she ruined my trust with her. If she wants to work with me again, she will have to pay in full after the last incident!

This pandemic has brought the worst in people. I work in customer service and some customers are really nasty. There are times that I hate to go to work because I don't want to deal with rude people. I'm sorry that there are people that trys to take advantage of someone who is doing something for you. I make cakes just to my family for free and I don't even get a thank you.
