Yes SES was SM’s first girl group and their debut was ‘I’m your girl’ (was very very popular at that time). It’s also become sort of a SM tradition for their girl groups to do remake of their songs RV did a remake of ‘be natural’ and Aespa did a remake of their song ‘dreams come true’ ,

That Seo Tae Ji's "come back home" song is legend. Lots of kids who ran away from home DID come back home after they listened this song. They were really huge influence to youngsters. In a good way 👍

They are currently in YG, debuted in '97 from DSP Media disbanded in 2000 then came back 16 yrs later in 2016 with YG because of a very successful variety show special. Hope u react to their songs or their variety cause they're super funny 😂😂😂😂

SM H.O.T was the first idol training and scouting type of system they came up with the idol system with the dance and vocal training and it worked for H.O.T and the group's after so other companies implemented it. Also each group had a balloon colour that was their lightsticks

You gotta watch Rain's Love Song and Lee Hyori's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! In a group dominated comeback in 2010, these two proved how they became icons of their era.

Rain was one of the first idols I knew about since I used to be into kdramas and he was the main lead in a drama called ‘full house’ which was very popular in the early 2000s

Fun fact Shinhwa are the 1st gen version of what’s known as the ‘jimseung-dol’ aka ‘beast-dol’. The nickname isn’t originally theirs it was invented because of 2PM eventhough they debuted almost 10 years after them, but Shinhwa are widely accepted as the 1st group with that sort of super ‘masculine’ vibe.
I’ve seen them in a couple videos. Pretty good looking guys if you asked me lol.

Kpop idol ( BTS, Monsta X,brave girls, Twice, Btob, ateez ,got7, Exo, straykids, seventeen, nct ,,,,,etc) grew up watching Rain.
His performances were so cool and impressive at the time, and he influenced many idols.
The 2004 (It’s raining) and 2008 ( rainism) songs are still covered by many idols.
As his songs and dramas became a mega hit in Asia, He was the first in Korea to be called a world star and set numerous first records.
He was cast by a Korean film director, who was impressed by his performance at the awards ceremony, and made his film debut. Later, he was cast as the Hollywood Ninja Assassin.
throughout my whole childhood, i loved listening to jpop and i always thought boa was japanese because she was such a big star in japan! when i got into kpop i was stunned that the singer from my childhood was actually a kpop star
SEO Tai-Ji is a regend of K-pop history in Korea. 32 years a ago (1990), SEO released first song called "l know". It was a big hit. I believe that this song was a start of K-pop.
Lee Hyori was the woman with Jessi in the MV of her song (NUNU NANA). Ahh I was so proud when I introduced her to my friends and they had the same reaction like you guys haha

When it's raining came out, he did a world tour and I got to see him in the smaller theatre in Madison Square Garden. It was bananas. He had rain come down on stage. Bananas.
Waleska, you were spot on about singers like Sea (aka Bada -- "bada" = "the sea" in Korean) from S.E.S helping SM Town establish itself as the singers' label. She and Ock Ju Hyun from FinKL were widely considered two of the best girl group singers from 1st gen. I hope you will do more of them, but especially S.E.S. They were my favorite growing up and used to be huge. Their popularity back in their heyday reminded me of how big TLC used to be in the US.
I would suggest Jinusean, they're like one of the first artists from YG Ent. Actually, I would suggest reacting to OG YG Family, Jinusean, Master Wu, 1TYM, Perry, and their first female artist, Lexy. They used to collaborate and perform as YG Family, my favorite song of theirs being Familenium. They have a performance going around where it included YG himself singing and dancing.

In Korea though it’s 20 korean age that they start uni which is 18/19 normal age (majorly 18 since the school year starts at the beginning of the actual year

should def check out Sechkies, g.o.d and Se7en.. these guys were considered the "rivals" to HOT, Shinhwa and Rain
also not sure if this has already been mentioned, but before lightsticks as you mentioned, kpop groups used coloured balloons. Each group had their own colour, HOT - white, g.o.d - sky blue, Sechkies - yellow, Shinhwa - orange to name a few. There were a lot of fanwars with the colours too, so a lot of groups have really specific colours like NCT's official colour is Pearl Neo Champagne, or .. Super Junior is saphire blue etc.
I guess I would recommend Turbo's Lee Jong Kook's Loveable, i still listen to the song to this day, BoA's eat you up, IVY's sonata of temptation, Park Ji Yoon Coming of Age Ceremony....
First generation Kpop is such gold and newer Kpop stand should definitely listen to some!!! Even though I’m not familiar with the majority of 1st Gen, the songs that I’ve heard are absolutely amazing!!! My favorite 1st Gen idols that I regularly listen to and stan are BoA, Shinhwa, S.E.S, and Rain.

I liked the slight variety but there were definitely groups missing like DEUX, Jinusean, Sechskies, g.o.d., Baby V.O.X, Turbo. You definitely need to do a full 1rst gen set. Then a 2nd gen set because there is SO much.

I love you how guys checked out all these 1st gen. I first heard of 1TYM because their song "Hot" was in the Pump it up game when I was growing up in the early 00's (Also through that game I also heard of Tashannie's Caution and Lexy's Greenhorn/Ae Song ft Psy) So I think that's why when I first heard of Big Bang I was already so attracted to YGE artists. Too bad you didn't react to Se7en. Both Rain and Se7en were huge at that time and although they're long time friends, they were always competing against each other.

Lee Hyori was in Jessi’s Nunu Nana MV! Also she was in the project group with Hwasa, Uhm JungHwa and Jessi (Refund Sisters). She was also part of a project group with Rain and Yoo Jaesuk! After a long break, Hyori’s been collaborating and working in the industry again, and its so good to see 🥺
Another TMI, Shownu used to be Hyori’s backup dancer before he finally debuted with Monsta X 😂
I recommend listening to Hyori’s songs Bad Girls and Black. She also did an amazing award show collab with CL years ago, definitely recommend that.

As you might have noticed the MV's from SM had all nice resolutions, that's not because SM had cameras from the future in the early 2000, is because of a recent remastering project (from last year and still ongoing) where they reuploaded old MV's in HD.

I think before kpop the biggest genre in Korea at that time we’re ballads and Trot music although ballads were still very popular after kpop blew up

Trivia: Taijiboys was such a force in SK then that Come Back Home (a song encouraging runaways to come back home) actually urged young people to go back to their homes. This group is so iconic, they singlehandedly ended censorship in korean music through their song Sidae Yugaem (Regret of the Times)..so much to say about them so little time lol.
And Rain..RAINNNN. Gosh many kpoppies sleep on this man and it's sad cos alot of them don't know his role in the hallyu wave. He was like the foremost male soloist in korean pop music for like a good decade, he did concerts in the US even before kpop became like a renowned genre. Also, waleska: look up Ninja Assassin - YOU'RE WELCOME LOL

Tbf a groups most popular song isn’t necessarily the song that defines their sound the best. Fin.KL have several songs that are very different to the one you reacted to eg. Now or FINKL. Also groups that are considered ‘rival’ aren’t usually similar just look at the top groups of the 2nd-4th gen groups none of them are similar to each othe

Seo Taji brought k-hip hop popularity through their last title track Come Back Home in 1996
HOT is considered the first “Kpop group” and were known all over Korea. They made the gloves they were in the video a popular trend. Everyone wore them those days
SES is well respected and their center Eugene is known these days for her role in the popular k-drama ‘The Penthouse.’
SES only real competitor’s were Lee Hyori’s group Fink.L
Rain was the backup dancer to JYP and considers himself to be his son. He also still has lunch with JYP every weekend with their families
Lee Hyori has been on the front of the newspaper over 800 times and made the news for having a cold. She also had a stage collab with CL
Lee Hyori and Rain made a group together called SSak 3 along with a famous Mc and released one title track Beach Again
1TYM was the inspiration behind the first concept of BTS
Lee Hyori was the least popular in Fink.l up until she released 10 minutes
Fink.l was so popular and some say they were the winners of the war between them and SES but both are very respected

SHINHWA is a symbolic group in the Korean idol world, whether it be a boy idol group or a girl idol group, it is a standard course to cover the dance of SHINHWA song called 'Wild Eyes'
Shinhwa!!! They're not just the longest-running Korean boy band in existence, but also they¡re doing it without any member changement. They started as 6 memmbers and they're still 6!! Aside from being so talented, they're really funny, so it's really enjoyable to watch them on variety. After the military service they lauched their own variety show called shinhwa broadcast and was really funny ^..^ I hope you can react to other songs from them like Brand New, Venus, This love, Touch, or kiss me like that (the latest).

As a Fan of first/sec gen grps this has been a pleasure, there is so much more to explore and sooo much good music. It's been really a while I feel since you guys got this excited, I was all hyped up as well as screaming with you. Such a pleasure!! Get a hold of Danny Im/Taebin from 1TYM. He had a show in English where he would interview US expats that were part of the first hallyu wave, and they all spoke of their training and how their retinas were burned off by the stage and MV lighting. Fun stuff.
I'm so glad you guys did this. Shinnwa is my ultimate favourite group. Their songs are great and they also are the original clown idols on variety shows. They have a wonderful bond and I hope you get to do more on them. Could we do a 2nd generation with groups that haven't been mentioned yet?
React to the first two vids Ssak3 funny moments Rain and Lee Hyori were such a hot topic there were so many rumours of them together but they have a new coed group project for a variety show with that national host Yoo jae suk it's such a fun watch they have 2 MVs from that whole project. But they talk about how much they were talked about but they never dated but she woulda been down back then. You should definitely watch a funny video from that show Hyori is hilarious and they roast Rain

H.O.T. was debuted with ‘Warrior's Descendant’, this song is talking about he school bullying. Their titled song of each album were all about some society issues.

SeoTaiJi and boys are pioneer of Korean pop industry. Seo composed and produced all songs and albums. He brought Hip Hop, gangster rap to Korea.
In 1992 they debuted and it was super sensation. They retired 1996 and a lot of fans committed suicide.
Seo started his music career with hip hop dance music and moved to rock based music as he was a member of Rock band ‘Sinawi’ before he made Seotaiji and boys.
His name Taiji is from guitarist Taiji of X JAPAN.
Loved how you recognized Shinhwa’s vocals! They were my first group to stan in 2016 before I became an SB19 stan. I stanned SB19 because they remind me of Shinhwa’s great live vocals and harmonies. Maybe you could watch some of their ballads 😊
Everyone was obsessed with HOT's "Candy" back then. Their main rivals were SECHSKIES - another huge Gen 1 group from YG who still release music once in a while like "All For You" released as a recent thanks to their fans; and they also mentor the kids of YG sometimes (Treasure met them during their series T-Map). A few other Gen 1 groups who debuted around the last 90's to 2002 who were beloved were GOD, Turbo, Leessang, Epik High, and Dynamic Duo. I'll suggest a song from each:
SECHSKIES - Couple (the 1998 version is classic but they also remade it recently)
GOD - Observation (from 99 and a classic everyone knew the steering wheel dance to)
Turbo - Black Cat Nero (from 96'. ATEEZ recently remade it for Halloween and featured Kim Jungkook from Turbo in the video)
Leessang - The Pursuit of Happiness (made in 2012 but hits hard)
Epik High - Wannabe (bop from 2009)
Dynamic Duo - Go Back (a classic from around 2009)
