- Filmed in one take, I play in 30 different fiddle styles!
Released on World Fiddle Day 2021! Hope you Enjoy.
Please forgive the occasionally glitchy video (final cut pro on my computer does that for whatever reason and it's impossible to get rid of) and some sloppy playing in the transitions between styles especially- it was all filmed in one take and because of the various tempos I had no click track and had to jump in as best I could to each style!
Here are the 30 styles listed in order of play:
Scottish, Irish, French Canadian, Canadian Old-time, American Old-time, Métis, Cape-breton, Texas style, Bluegrass, Western Swing, English, Gypsy Jazz, Cajun, Country, Swedish, Klezmer, Prairie Canadian Old-time (Calvin Vollrath), West Coast, Contemporary, Ukrainian, New England, Breton, Blues, Shetland, Mariachi, Jazz, Maritimes, Choro, Folk (fiddle backup), Czech.
Here are the tunes I used for each style:
Scottish- Highlander's Farewell to Ireland (trad)
Irish- Killarney Boys of Pleasure (trad)
French Canadian- Son of a Bear (Louis Beaudoin?)
Canadian Old-time - Don Messor's Breakdown (Don Messor)
American Old-time- Angeline the Baker (trad)
Métis - Red River Jig (trad)
Cape-breton - Miller of Drone (James Scott Skinner)
Texas style- Tom and Jerry (trad)
Bluegrass- Wheel Hoss (Bill Monroe)
Western Swing- Faded Love (Bob, John, and Billy Jack Wills)
English - In the Fields in Frost and Snow (trad)
Gypsy Jazz- Lady Be Good (George and Ira Gershwin)
Cajun- Cajun Fiddle (Don Rich, Buck Owens)
Country - Devil Went Down to Georgia (Charlie Daniels Band)
Swedish- Flippen (Vasen)
Klezmer- Hopak Katsatske (trad)
Prairie Canadian Old-time - Marg Cote Reel (Calvin Vollrath)
West Coast- Flowers (Oliver Schroer)
Contemporary- June Tune (Trent Freeman)
Ukrainian- Arkan (trad)
New England- Moneymusk (trad)
Breton- Danse Andro (trad)
Blues- [Generic 12-bar blues in G]
Shetland- Spootiskerry (trad)
Mariachi- Jesusita En Chihuahua
Jazz- Misty (Erroll Garner)
Maritimes- L'Acadienne (trad)
Choro- Tico-Tico no fuba (Zequinha de Abreu)
Folk fiddle backup (Standard folk song chord progression with fiddle improvisation- I wanted to represent how the main role of many fiddlers is accompanying singers/singer-songwriters, rather than simply playing instrumental tunes).
Czech- Beer Barrel Polka (Jaromir Vejvoda) - Hudba

As a Swede I'm honoured to be represented in this list 💙💛💙
I’m an American banjo player and aspiring fiddler, and it really warmed my heart to hear Angeline the Baker. That was one of the first fiddle tunes I ever learned. Incredible playing, I aspire to play as well as you someday!
I’m Cajun French and live in Lafayette Louisiana, you did the damn thing 👏🏼
This is seriously so impressive! Feel like I learned more about fiddling from this video than I have in about 15 years of playing.
What a tour de force! 30 is more than enough, but I'll throw in Argentine tango, Danish, and Norwegian Hardanger fiddle!
Love me some Danish fiddle
The versatility and possiblies of this instrument are endless..
Could throw in Paganini's 3rd? The one with the fingered octaves... Technically fiddle music... Just stupid hard fiddle music.
Then you also have the Finnish tango!
@@strings1984 you wanna hear paganinis caprice #26 for guitar. with Li Jie you will drop your jaw!
The Swedish fiddle may have been similar to what my papaw heard as a boy when him and his brother would sit on the railroad tracks and listen to a Swedish man play his fiddle on his porch. The man was an engineer for the local mining company I think.
"Please forgive the occasionally glitchy video ......"
I think the last thing you need is forgiveness!! That was absolutely brilliant!!!! Thank you.
I am loving all the Canadian sub groups here. As a traveling Canadian folk musician I really enjoyed this.
Was wondering if the player is perhaps from Atlantic Canada, or have those styles really gained so much attention? Seemed to somewhat dominate the video (which I'm not complaining about 😉 ).
@@aarphi1984 According to his bio, he's from British Columbia and specialises in Canadian fiddle styles
I am so happy that you have labeled each tune and have the style written for each section of the video! I know many of these tunes, but would have been lost otherwise. You are a fiddler’s fiddler!❤️❤️🎻🎶
It's not easy to cover so much range in one take. To me the best thing about this is that it only covers a small percentage of all the fiddle styles in the world, missing things like Romanian, Hungarian, Spanish, Peruvian, etc. The Violin was arguably THE main instrument in the 18th and 19th centuries. No single person could hope to play all the styles
Blows me away how many different styles there are and even more so how you can separate them all like that.

Absolutely amazing, ty for adding the timestamps too- you are just incredible!
Dude this is amazing! You just fiddled for 20 minutes straight and didn’t miss a beat. I love it. Definitely sharing!
I think my fave is Bluegrass.
In cape Breton the sets are 45 minutes. sometimes they change the pianist.
Watching and taking in your control of your right arm and hand in conjunction with the control of the bow with such varied techniques is truly a wonderful thing to watch. All the hard work you put in over the years has really paid off for yourself and your fans… of which I am a big fan.
Thanks so much Michael!!
Cajun goes harder than I thought it would 🔥
Real talent. Unbelievable to be able to play so many styles - GENIUS
Damn... I've been playing violin for almost 9 years. And idk why I've never heard such violin music before. I badly want to learn how to use my violin the same way. Gone to search for tutorials
All I can say is Dayuum! An entire planet's musical samples in 19 minutes! Well done!
I must say that I found "Cape-Breton" more simular to the type of fiddle style that I've heard here in Sweden than the actuall "Swedish" example but well done either way! Im by no means an expert just love the sound of a fiddle! Great work!
Thank you so much! Here my faves:
1) Irish
2) Cajun
3) Swedish
4) Breton
5) West Coast
6) Ukrainian
7) Maritimes
Choro on fiddle? Uau never been so proud of being Brazilian!! 🎻
Love living in NB and being surrounded by so many great styles!
Stunning. What a terrific presentation! This took a LOT of work to put together. Thank you for sharing your talents.
Cape Breton was a huge part of my childhood nice to here it again
Such a cool video! As a beginner on the fiddle it's inspirational to see so many different styles displayed so well. I hope I can get as good as you some day! Thanks for sharing 👍
Ive been considering picking up a cheap starter from Amazon. I had no idea there were so many styles of play to choose from. Thanks for sharing!
This is amazing!!! You played for almost 19 minutes without missing a beat! It's amazing to hear all of the different styles of fiddle music. I've been learning how to play the violin and I'm trying out fiddling and this is a great way for me to pinpoint which style I would really like to try playing! Again, great job!!
Loooooove the first one. I had CZcams playing random videos while I washed dishes and this one came on. I was very confused as to what kind of performance I was listening to, what style… then I figured it must be the sample video of 30 different styles. Amazing work to do all these.
It was like traveling around time while attending various festivals of the world. Not to mention informative.
Love this! We were watching and heard "Faded Love" and Ellie immediately paused and picked up her fiddle so she could play the tune. Happy World Fiddle Day!
Abso F-ing-lutely Brilliant Mate! You know, if you had a Book with all the Bowings, and a Play along, It would totally replace all that horrible Kreutzer & Tartini that young Violinists are forced to go through to learn Bowing. Might even make a dent in O'Connor's "American School", totally overpriced and not even remotely connected with how He Learned to Play. Total Admiration Michael!
AWESOME!! NONSTOP! VARIATION!
German and Norwegian should have been here too, especially considering norway has their own fiddle - Hardanger fiddle
Both styles are in part 2 of this series! czcams.com/video/0c97JWGPBp4/video.html
Just...Outstanding! What a great, great talent!
English, Scottish, Shetland, Breton and Ukrainian. 😍
Great fiddling! You showed great versatility in 30 styles. I can't imagine making all those transitions instantaneously. Blessings!

That was superb, I loved every minute. I'm going to share generously!
Thanks for showing your expertise. I really appreciate your time
Bravo, brilliant and as comprehensive a survey of styles as I’ve ever heard. As a fiddler for 50 years, the most challenging style was always Cape Breton style to me. Really appreciated Maritime and the wide variety of Canadian styles as well. Thanks times ten and squared twice.
