    “Crab crisps” aren’t based on crab, but “Old Bay Seasoning” - an iconic crab boil (and other foods) salt and celery seasoning. They just can’t use the Old Bay brand name

    • @rotho4959
      @rotho4959 Před 2 lety

      The only brand that uses the Old Bay name is Herr's. Those have a strong vinegar flavor to them. I like the Utz version better.

    Lays is dominant in the US, but to be fair there are tons of other competitors. Especially regionally. It's a big thing for Chip/Snack brands to based out of different States in the US, and expand to neighboring states, then sometimes eventually nationally. Although at that point the conglomerates often buy them.
    Fun fact for the Blokes. You mentioned Thousand Islands dressing. That's actually an American invention. The Thousand Islands is a real place in Upstate New York. There are a few different possible origin stories for the dressing, but all tie in to the place.

    To be fair, the "air" in the bags is actually a preservative gas that is added to keep the chips fresh.
    Also, I love Dill Pickle Lay's. I didn't think I would, but they're amazing.

    • @jekiewicz
      @jekiewicz Před 2 lety +2

      It keeps the chips more intact during transport and stocking as well. I worked for Frito Lay for years, and when I'd grab a less inflated bag out of a case the chips were almost always just crumbs at the bottom. It makes the bags look nice on the shelves too when they're all popped and laced, and as ridiculous as it sounds if it looks good on the shelf it'll sell better. Every once in a while you'd open a case and one bag would have just air in it and the bag next to it would be filled with double the amount lol.

    Are you Blokes old enough to remember 'twin packs' of 2 bags of chips sold in a carboard box (like a cereal box, yet bigger) that kept the chips from being crushed to powder by the gorillas that sling them out of the delivery truck or stock the shelves in the shop or put them under a dozen big cans in your bag by the checker? Damn I miss having 2 dozen big chips ('crisps') in a bag instead of a cup of dried potato flour in the bottom of the bag!

    Oh man this is the perfect video for me
    I can eat a party size bag of those classic lays in 2 sittings or 3 depending on what I eat
    I can go through about 10 of those bags in 2 weeks because most of the food I like goes with those chips (mostly because I like the chips)
    I’ve probably eaten AT LEAST 1000 party size bags of chips in the last 18 years (I’m not 18 so I’m accounting for childhood) and I even did the math at one bag every 3 days which actually comes out to over 2000 bags but I don’t finish one bag every 3 days no matter what because usually I have other foods too
    But recently for the past few months I’ve been getting a shit ton of burnt bags and they taste COMPLETELY different and I hate them
    They don’t even have the potato flavor or salt
    They just taste burnt and stale
    But when you get an actual good bag with nice crunchy (but not stale extra hard crunchy) chips that dissolve in your mouth then it’s just heaven
    Any one too Ruffles classic wavy bbq
    They all taste good when they’re not burnt
