Love your concept for this layout - old and new alongside each other, fast and slow. Variety is truly the spice! If it were my layout I would move those tunnel mouths forward a bit. Nothing destroys the visual illusion of a model quite as much as being able to see a train turning round an unfeasibly (for the real thing) sharp bend just inside a tunnel. If you move the tunnel mouths a bit you can hide the fact that the coaches are at 45 degrees to one another in there!
Your layout is an absolute dream. It's great to see the layout develop. I really like the two "eras". Great to see a variety. I bet you cannot wait to start doing the scenics. I'm still waiting on my track order so no trains or modeling at the moment. Happy New year. Looking forward to viewing in 2023.

the IC225 looks great, seeing a 225 like that will always bring back memorys of going to the NRM as Child with my Grandparents. the 1 hour journey from Newcastle to York is one of my faveourite journeys, if only LNER would send the 91s a bit further north!

I feel like the super elevation is a combination of too short a distance and too much elevation. in the s curves, it really is exaggerated when the train leans from one side to the other. i think it would be better to reduce the overall height of the elevation and try to extend the distance between elevation changes.
Agreed. The way the carriages lurched from side to side as the super elevation changed from one side to the other was disconcerting, to say the least. Watch ~10 seconds, starting at 11:20
Also you need to start the S/E from within the tunnel area as it will look far better emerging already at ‘tilt’. I have done S/E successfully and allowed a minimum of 4” between changes of tilt direction. Avoids the naughty wheel antics you have discovered. He He!
great update the layouts really starting to take shape and really nice trackwork, your right about hornby trains will run on anything, other locos like dapol manors hate my 2nd radius points lol, keep up the good work. Tom

The super elevation looks great, and as someone else might have said it may look a bit jerky, because the change of side on the elevation is so quick. Maybe reducing the height may help? Look forward to seeing more updates soon
Interesting with the Super Elevation. When I saw the West Hill things, I had assumed that they would be spaced out - not back to back. Looking forward to seeing how this works and looks when fully “fettled”.

Opened a new 33 while watching this! One of my favourites, Heljan did a nice job of the 2015 retool. Blimey the layout is getting complex, you've certainly set yourself a challenge! I see you'll be continuing to work on the elevation for the curves 👍 It is possible to get it super smooth with those 3d printed wedges but I can't remember how many hours I must've spent messing about with it! Great video and update here Richard, enjoying the progress of this layout, some good additions especially with the 92, I got my 92022 Charles Dickens and have to say it is a very good locomotive, I have unfortunately just had to purchase some Railfreight distribution lettering transfers for it because the lettering has started rubbing off in places which has annoyed me quite a bit but hopefully I can repair that with the transfers, nice class 33, looks good in the museum fresh condition, I’m currently trying to make a Mallard in museum condition, i also recently picked up one of the dapol class 59s in the DB Schenker livery as well, overall great update here Richard, have a good new year and keep up the great work.

Very nice. Coincidentally, I also bought a Heljan 33/1 in BR Blue (112 Templecombe, with black cab surrounds) at Warley, although it's an older 2nd hand model. I also received a CS blue 92 last week, although it's the DCC Ready version of the other CS one, 010, which oddly doesn't have the painted underframe/bogie details, but completely agree it's the best 00 model I've seen.
I love the super elevation and I like the idea behind using it on the S curve but like you said it doesn't work. I would also extend the elevation into the tunnels so that as the trains are coming out of them are already tilting. And you answered my question if you were going to build staging/fiddle modules for in exhibition mode. I have to say I love your idea of creating a dual purpose layout. Can't wait for the next update!
Great work on the mainline elevation and the nice broad curves! Too many modular layouts have curving that is far to sharp and toy like. (I understand many modeller's do have space constraints, but it still remains an issue with me). I have a shelf layout with industrial switching using Kay-Dee couplers and I can operate happily with that for a few hours. My long trains I run on the club layout of which I'm a member.
I really enjoy these updates, even if I’m not actively building a layout myself. I agree the curves at the ‘garage door’ end will be tight, although it would be a shame to only have 2 of the mainlines completed. Only suggestion I have is to end the straight sections sooner, to give more space for the curves. And for ‘exhibition’ mode, where the straights wouldn’t reach the edge of the baseboard, you’d need an additional drop-in piece to bridge the gap. Probably too complicated.
Very interesting vid last night Richard, I've killed my Parsons Heath layout and am in the early stages of a 12x8 N Gauge Eastern region layout 4 track mainline for expresses/express freights and two track branch with station and small depot for freights, DMU and the boat train to Harwich... may sneak a branch off for a little heritage line ;) Do love your updates really entertaining mate.

Another fascinating video, wish they'd been around when I started my layout 14 years ago! it was interesting what you said about the four upper tracks at the fiddle yard joins, but I was wondering how the heritage line joining-up will be achieived as it's hidden on the lower level (maybe I missed that episode!) looking forward to the next one.
Nice update. One little suggestion (from someone who has modelled High Speed main lines) It's surprising how much of the 'off scene' curve you need to cover up. Might need to bring those tunnels mouths forward slightly so the illusion isn't broken, Mk4's are very long and will have a large horizontal 'throw'.

Coming along very nicely although I would suggest your transition to super elevation is too abrupt and would benefit from being a little smoother. Out of interest, will the backscene be on the inside or outside or options for both depending on whether the layout is in Garage mode or Exhibition mode. It’s possible if you extend the main line in a wide loop covering the heritage line giving the “inside/outside” line more room for the curve to be useable
I like the four train plan. You might also consider a BIg Four train run in similar fashion. Maybe even set up the tunnels to fill with steam before the Heritage Trains come out of the potals.
@@NewJunction Thats good but, The real thing has forward facing steam vents which inside the tunnel they would project the steam out of the tunnel before the engines gets there. Particularly if they were moving slowly out of the tunnel. Just a suggestion that could make the entrance of Big Four more dramatic. as you said it could be a once only or whenever a steam engine leaves the tunnel. The Big Four LMS , GWR, LNER, and SR -- ALL their best Steam engines their best express trains have you got them?
Coming along nicely which is more than can be said for my layout...one thing that I've noticed tho is how close to the edge your trackwork is at the ends (under the display cabinet and along the garage door), I'd hate to see you lose a loco to the floor because of it
I hope you can manage to fit the curves to the 4 track mainline, or at least connect up with curved points, even if it's 2 tracks at garage door end.... in "garage mode". I am sure you will work something out, maybe reduced speed for tighter radius!!! Awesome layout.
Hi Richard, I remember 33116 when she did look like the model. She was used for charter services & boat trains with 2 TCs repainted in to their original BR plain blue livery. Seems, as you say, she has been let to go a bit manky since preserved, such a shame.
At this stage no idea, its a tad early! If I could choose it would go to The Great Electric Train Show and maby Model Rail Scotland as they're my favourites.
Just a thought for the landscaping of those inside corners, have you thought of bringing the landscaping down below the level of the baseboards? Hard to describe but seen it on a few US layouts, the scenery comes over the side of the baseboard and it gives you more height for building hills etc. just a thought, may be difficult to transport.

For the first time ever our garage - after the exceptional early cold weather then thaw, sweated up, mainly on plastics. I was to store locos (in their boxes, with silica gel sachets, in bubble wrap, in a plastic storage box, with larger indicator silica gel sachets) in the garage. Now I'm pondering if plastic boxes would sweat up and/or bubble wrap too. If the weather/climate is cooling (I'm not convinced by carbon climate change as the academic papers don't indicate such), I, ironically might have to consider a dehumidifier in winter and perhaps a diesel heater. I noted local shops had indoor floods due to thaw condensation on their plate glass windows. I've never seen per like it in 50 plus years🤔🤔🤔🙄🙄🤕☹️
I get joining the rear and front baseboards to get a straight run on the exhibition circuit - but where are the fiddle yards at each end going to come from as no mention so far?
So with the exhibition mode, presumably you have a fiddle yard planned to run behind the scenic break? I don’t hear mention of it. Do you know what form it will take?
I'm really intrigued by the garage vs. exhibition idea - assuming the frontage gets about twice as long when in exhibition mode... does that mean you need to build another set of boards to complete the loops? Sounds challenging! Also - just out of interest, as I've never considered an exhibition before (but, if I ever get started on my layout), what sort of space can you get at an exhibition, and roughly (*very* roughly!) what sort of costs are involved? Good luck & it looks brilliant by the way!
Yes I've still to build the fiddle yards, I'll consider that closer to the time. Exhibition wise most shows cover your costs to go and put you up etc space is down to the show but there are some big halls to fill out there.

Interesting update. I saw the class 92s at my club and was very impressed. So much so that I said I was going to buy one. However I changed my mind again. I also cancelled my pre-order for thie class 31 too but I have got some coaches (RTC & TPE) and class 37s on order with Accurascale. There are other older locos I want more than the class 92 and 31. Looking forward to scenery being added. You also menioned a concern about one end being a bit tight. Didn't you have this designed on software that should prove it fits? I am going to help fit the track for the Dementia Den I volunteer with on Saturday. I designed the layout for people with dementia in mind, so I hope it fits!

Yes it really needs some felting to get right!
It also feels like there is some sort of kink, right under the portal , wich combines poorly with the start of the superelevation thee.

All the cool kids got 33s for Christmas it seems! I've spent today adding more wedges to smooth the 'cant' out... we shall see how it goes. 😅

Coincidentally, I also bought a Heljan 33/1 in BR Blue (112 Templecombe, with black cab surrounds) at Warley, although it's an older 2nd hand model. I also received a CS blue 92 last week, although it's the DCC Ready version of the other CS one, 010, which oddly doesn't have the painted underframe/bogie details, but completely agree it's the best 00 model I've seen.
Its very nice!
I love the super elevation and I like the idea behind using it on the S curve but like you said it doesn't work. I would also extend the elevation into the tunnels so that as the trains are coming out of them are already tilting. And you answered my question if you were going to build staging/fiddle modules for in exhibition mode. I have to say I love your idea of creating a dual purpose layout. Can't wait for the next update!

Great work on the mainline elevation and the nice broad curves! Too many modular layouts have curving that is far to sharp and toy like. (I understand many modeller's do have space constraints, but it still remains an issue with me). I have a shelf layout with industrial switching using Kay-Dee couplers and I can operate happily with that for a few hours. My long trains I run on the club layout of which I'm a member.
I'm trying to have as light a curve as possible 😊

I really enjoy these updates, even if I’m not actively building a layout myself.
I agree the curves at the ‘garage door’ end will be tight, although it would be a shame to only have 2 of the mainlines completed.
Only suggestion I have is to end the straight sections sooner, to give more space for the curves. And for ‘exhibition’ mode, where the straights wouldn’t reach the edge of the baseboard, you’d need an additional drop-in piece to bridge the gap. Probably too complicated.

Very interesting vid last night Richard, I've killed my Parsons Heath layout and am in the early stages of a 12x8 N Gauge Eastern region layout 4 track mainline for expresses/express freights and two track branch with station and small depot for freights, DMU and the boat train to Harwich... may sneak a branch off for a little heritage line ;) Do love your updates really entertaining mate.

Another fascinating video, wish they'd been around when I started my layout 14 years ago! it was interesting what you said about the four upper tracks at the fiddle yard joins, but I was wondering how the heritage line joining-up will be achieived as it's hidden on the lower level (maybe I missed that episode!) looking forward to the next one.
The heritage line is its own loop and will have its own fiddle yard. 😊
Nice update. One little suggestion (from someone who has modelled High Speed main lines) It's surprising how much of the 'off scene' curve you need to cover up. Might need to bring those tunnels mouths forward slightly so the illusion isn't broken, Mk4's are very long and will have a large horizontal 'throw'.
This is becoming a frequent suggestion... Ill have to take the advice on board 😊

Coming along very nicely although I would suggest your transition to super elevation is too abrupt and would benefit from being a little smoother. Out of interest, will the backscene be on the inside or outside or options for both depending on whether the layout is in Garage mode or Exhibition mode. It’s possible if you extend the main line in a wide loop covering the heritage line giving the “inside/outside” line more room for the curve to be useable

I like the four train plan. You might also consider a BIg Four train run in similar fashion. Maybe even set up the tunnels to fill with steam before the Heritage Trains come out of the potals.

@@NewJunction Thats good but, The real thing has forward facing steam vents which inside the tunnel they would project the steam out of the tunnel before the engines gets there. Particularly if they were moving slowly out of the tunnel. Just a suggestion that could make the entrance of Big Four more dramatic. as you said it could be a once only or whenever a steam engine leaves the tunnel. The Big Four LMS , GWR, LNER, and SR -- ALL their best Steam engines their best express trains have you got them?

Coming along nicely which is more than can be said for my layout...one thing that I've noticed tho is how close to the edge your trackwork is at the ends (under the display cabinet and along the garage door), I'd hate to see you lose a loco to the floor because of it

I remember 33116 when she did look like the model. She was used for charter services & boat trains with 2 TCs repainted in to their original BR plain blue livery. Seems, as you say, she has been let to go a bit manky since preserved, such a shame.

At this stage no idea, its a tad early! If I could choose it would go to The Great Electric Train Show and maby Model Rail Scotland as they're my favourites.
Just a thought for the landscaping of those inside corners, have you thought of bringing the landscaping down below the level of the baseboards? Hard to describe but seen it on a few US layouts, the scenery comes over the side of the baseboard and it gives you more height for building hills etc. just a thought, may be difficult to transport.

My layout is similar idea to yours, but in garage mode at exhibitions, 16x8' 3 sided scenic forth side big hill to hide fiddle access. It's currently under going a re model on one side, so no playing at the mo

BTW the "can't" (super elevation) needs calming, as in reality, such is done over a great deal of distance on the real railway. It's tricky to get right in model form, I've dabbled with it in OO, O and SM32.

Thanks for info on the garage. For the first time ever our garage - after the exceptional early cold weather then thaw, sweated up, mainly on plastics. I was to store locos (in their boxes, with silica gel sachets, in bubble wrap, in a plastic storage box, with larger indicator silica gel sachets) in the garage. Now I'm pondering if plastic boxes would sweat up and/or bubble wrap too. If the weather/climate is cooling (I'm not convinced by carbon climate change as the academic papers don't indicate such), I, ironically might have to consider a dehumidifier in winter and perhaps a diesel heater. I noted local shops had indoor floods due to thaw condensation on their plate glass windows. I've never seen per like it in 50 plus years🤔🤔🤔🙄🙄🤕☹️

I'm really intrigued by the garage vs. exhibition idea - assuming the frontage gets about twice as long when in exhibition mode... does that mean you need to build another set of boards to complete the loops? Sounds challenging!
Also - just out of interest, as I've never considered an exhibition before (but, if I ever get started on my layout), what sort of space can you get at an exhibition, and roughly (*very* roughly!) what sort of costs are involved?

Exhibition wise most shows cover your costs to go and put you up etc space is down to the show but there are some big halls to fill out there.

Interesting update. I saw the class 92s at my club and was very impressed. So much so that I said I was going to buy one. However I changed my mind again. I also cancelled my pre-order for thie class 31 too but I have got some coaches (RTC & TPE) and class 37s on order with Accurascale. There are other older locos I want more than the class 92 and 31. Looking forward to scenery being added. You also menioned a concern about one end being a bit tight. Didn't you have this designed on software that should prove it fits? I am going to help fit the track for the Dementia Den I volunteer with on Saturday. I designed the layout for people with dementia in mind, so I hope it fits!
I did use software however I've changed the plan slightly haha
