      Dude does the viltrox affect the aperture of the lens? Like from f/1.8 on the sigma 18-35 turn it into f1/. 2?

  • @alijanahabdullah
    @alijanahabdullah Před 4 lety +41

    There is no correlation to aperture in M4/3 when it comes to light capability. It's the depth of field that will be affected (twice as deep)

    • @charlesdovideo
      @charlesdovideo Před 4 lety +2

      wait but it adds 2/3rds stop of light

    • @jas_bataille
      @jas_bataille Před 4 lety +3

      Both the DOF and the lowlight capabilities will be affected. The sensor is smallers, therefore, less light. However, being a major M43 proponent - and having set side by side shots with a Leica M10 and a 50mm Leica M mount f1.4 (a 15K combo) and shots with an Olympus EM-1 and a 75mm Navitar f1.3 (less than 2K) side by side making it seamless looking - there is definitely less light that get in a M3/4 sensor. Not even close. I could shoot with the Leica at f1.4, ISO 800 at night and it looked like a flash set-up was being used where nothing but the street lights were being used.
      But, the practice is different than the theory : it doesn't look like f5.6... it looks like there is more in focus, but the bokeh does look like f2.8. Which to me, is a *major* advantage of M4/3 format : you nail the focus at a wider aperture much more easily than with a full-frame camera or an APS-C. Which means I can go shoot wide open with my Oly 25mm f1.8 on the street and nail the focus 9.5/10 times on my subject - try that with a FF, good damn luck!
      Also, a M4/3 sensor is actually sharper edge-to-edge. There are less space to cover by the lens. If you use a 16mm lens (3x crop factor), the footage look dangerously sharp. It's insane. I have a 720p upload on the EM-1 mark I, which is known to suffer from soft video issues, shot with my Navitar prime wide-open at f/1.3, looking super-sharp.
      Now if you pixel-peep, sure. But who are gonna pixel-peel a video??? Nobody. No one is gonna freeze a frame and zoom in. And it's useless to do with photo unless you work as a top pro in advertising and have retouchers working like crazy on your shots - having said that, there is at least one top pro in that field shooting... you guesset it.. Olympus.
      I love this system because it gives me freedom. The freedom to put on any lens I want, even one designed for a security camera from the 70's. I love that, and for this reason, I'm a M4/3 person for life!

      @@jas_bataille > Both the DOF and the lowlight capabilities will be affected. The sensor is smallers, therefore, less light.
      That's on the sensor. But f/2.8 is the same light as f/2.8 in a FF camera.

    • @geekazoid
      @geekazoid Před 4 lety

      When you take APS-C sized frame and reduce it to the MFT sensor size you get more light on the sensor. But the aperture does not change.

      @professionalpotato4764 Před 3 lety

      @@jas_bataille The comparison could be slightly flawed since photo lenses measure in f stops. I suppose if you use cinema lenses, a T1.5 would result in exactly the same exposure on either cameras, ignoring DoF.

      Well yes, but actually no. The "brightness" the lens delivers is not lower, but on a smaller surface which results in worse low light performance. If you use a speedbooster you concentrate all of the light to this surface (pf the M4/3 Sensor) so the image gets brighter

    Hey get the Viltrox EF-MFT smart adapter as well. This will allow you to get both the boosted 26-50mm f2.5 as well as the 36-70mm f3.6 focal lengths. A constant f3.6 at those ranges are very good still, those focal lengths are generally for narrative and subject focused shots and they need to be properly lit anyway.

    • @JonBear
      @JonBear  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you Matt! I recently got the regular adaptor (without electronics) to get the 36-70 focal length and it looks great. Downside of getting the "non-smart" adaptor is that the aperture is always opened up to the widest (f3.6 equivalent) but fortunately the Sigma looks crrrrisp even wide open :)

    It vignettes because the lens was designed for APS-C (that's the "DC" part of the name) with a 1.62 crop factor, giving it an "effective" FF 29.1mm at full wide. Your MFT camera has a 2.0 crop factor but then you are throwing a .71 on to that. Running the math, your effective focal length (full frame equivalent) is 25.6mm. Which is wider than the lens was designed for! So it vignettes somewhat when it is full wide. You would be better off (IMHO) running with a simple adapter not a speed reducer. This foregoes the speed boost obviously, but runs the lens closer to it's design specs and removes a potentially problematic additional optical element. This would give you a 36-70mm effective focal range, a very useful range, and a still very fast f1.8

  • @seanedwards94
    @seanedwards94 Před 4 lety +4

    The speedbooster isn't improving low-light capability as you're saying. It allows you to "drop your aperture" another stop.
    Basically, your 2.8 lens on a m4/3 is still 2.8 in terms of light. Not a 5.6 as you're saying it would be.

    • @JonBear
      @JonBear  Před 4 lety +1

      That's right. My mistake! It's 5.6 in terms of shallow depth of field.
      The speedbooster allows me to use a 1.8 zoom lens like the Sigma on my m4/3 camera, and also drops my aperture. So yes it does improve my low light capability. Native zoom lenses generally don't drop further than 2.8. Unless you're willing to spend almost two grand on the Panasonic 10-25mm f1.7. It's comparable to this Sigma combo but at double the price and from the comparison videos on CZcams, the Sigma still delivers better image quality 👍
      Cheers brother thanks for watching!

  • @MattJett
    @MattJett Před 3 lety +3

    Just to he clear, when you stated that the boosted Sigma f1.8 goes to f1.2, you actually are getting f2.4 at the end of the day on your MFT 2.0x crop factor camera. Better than f3.6 with no Speedbooster.

They have a 24-70mm f2.8 DG (full frame version), but you would need to buy another adapter for the full frame lens and then you wouldn't be getting any better focal ranges or depth of field over the 18-35mm DC lens.

    crop factor has no effect on exposure or the effective f/ratio of a lens. it’s still an f/2.8 lens and will have the same exposure (at the same ISO and shutter speed) as any other camera. What changes is the effective depth of field, not because of the sensor size, but because of the changes in either focal length or subject distance that are necessary to get the same composition as a full frame sensor

    Hi Jon, I am not sure of what you said: "In MFT F/2.8 equals to F/5.6". Light is light. It is true that there is a crop factor of 2x and impacts Aperture focal length (in milimeters) and also bokeh. But I don't have clear that you can apply this also to light. I think that a 1.4 lens, is the same in all the systems. Not sure. Am I wrong?

    • @JonBear
      @JonBear  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes you are right! The 2x conversion for MFT applies to crop and depth of field. So to get a 2.8 equivalent depth of field on MFT you'd need 1.4. But Light has nothing to do with it. However as smaller sensors, MFT tends to need more light in general. Sorry for the confusion! I posted a correction in the description and others also pointed out my blunder. Thanks again for watching!

    I want to shoot training videos and cooking in a normal lighted kitchen with maybe 2 cheap softbox lights like 75W light bulbs.
    Until now I did not buy a good light like gordox (if i have to i would buy it ) because I don't see myself setting up a studio in a commercial gym or something (some cases cant be done with setting things up) , so I need something good for shooting in low light
    but what is low light is low light night :D or is low light a normal lit commercial gym or a bit lighted kitchen?
    I am very confused about what I would need to make good-looking videos. Do I need the GH5s or would the GH5 be sufficient with the speed booster and this fast lens?
    Because I am also gonna travel ( i hope so ;D ) and well taking a gimbal with me is something I would do but if the gh5 could do the stuff I want I would buy rather the allrounder.
    Well, I hope you find the time for reading and answering me thy in advance :)

      @JonBear  Před 3 lety

      For me the GH5 is a fantastic all-arounder. It takes fantastic photographs and videos and is stabilized so it's still my main travel camera.
      For client work I use a blackmagic 4k as my main camera, but the GH5 is still so so good and I use it as my B camera and the image matches the Blackmagic really well.
      Using this setup you will have your low light videography covered. This lens is a bit heavy for travel but I still use it all over the world on my travels and never regret bringing it. The only downside is that the autofocus does not work well with the adapter when filming video. If you have extra money, you could always get a pricier SONY full frame like A7SIII which makes any low light setting look bright

I know most people purchase the EF to MFT adapter with a sigma canon 18-35. Honestly I use Manual focus most of the time. For video it's absolutely fine, you'll barely notice it.
      The only drawback I can think of is that you need to adjust aperture physically on the speedbooster since the lens itself doesn't have an aperture ring. The camera also won't be able to tell you what aperture you're using. If you get a good deal on it I say go for it!

    • @professionalpotato4764

Prior to the Z system, you would never hear "NIkon" and "video" in the same sentence. So I've actually not seen or heard anyone adapt F mount lenses on video cameras that often. In that sense, the EF version would be a better investment. Even if you decide to buy expensive cinema cameras in future, or if you get a Canon cinema camera it'll still be usable.

      @JonBear  Před 4 lety

      Hi brother! I really appreciate it. I can recommend the GH5 hands down. It has really dropped in price as of late. I cannot imagine better value for your money at the moment. Are you more into photography or videography? A lot of photographers are switching to Olympus which is also a micro four thirds camera.
      GH5 is more video oriented however it takes great stills none the less. I think the Lumix G9 is more stills centric, but a recent firmware made tons of professional video recording features available. I can recommend micro four thirds cameras overall because of their smaller size, both body and lenses and this also means they're generally cheaper. Then if you really want the "full frame look" you can always get a speedbooster which gets you closer to full frame than even the super 35 sensors.
      Lens recommendations is tough. Both landscape and Portrait? You will need separate lenses. For portrait, anything above 35mm will be great. For landscape I'd say anything below 25m (assuming you're getting a micro four thirds camera)
      Lastly, for AF, for photos it works great. Even with the adapter and EF lens. For video, continuous auto focus is not great, but tap to focus is snappy and there is a button on the camera that is designed to get the focus with just a tap. Otherwise for video I do manual. lots of the more nicer vintage lenses are all manual anyway. One of my main lenses is Kamlan50mm which is fully manual. I got a video on it.

      Put the lens and camera back on and test it. If it's still bad, turn it more. Repeat until you get it right.

    Hello. You are using a Panasonic Lumix GH camera and a Sigma AF 18-35mm lens with a Viltrox EF-M1 adapter. If you focus on the subject, and change the focal length of the lens (18 - 35 or 35 - 18). Does the subject remain sharp? The sharpness disappears on my camera, and I need to focus a second time. When using a Panasonic 12 -38, 2.8 lens, there is no such effect. I change the focal length and the subject is constantly in focus. What do you think is the cause of the effect with Sigma AF 18-35mm.

    • @JonBear
      @JonBear  Před 4 lety

      I see what you mean! Yes this is called "parfocal". Sigma is unfortunately not a parfocal lens. Cinema zoom lenses tend to be Parfocal but they're really expensive. So yes you need to re-focus when you change the focal length.

    at 3:35 in you say the sigma 1.8 lens with the speedbooster becomes 1.2. But isn't that incorrect? Example: A 1.8 aperature lens on a MFT now becomes 5.6, then you add the speedbooster of 0.71 and now it becomes a 3.9 (ir 4.0). Let me know your thoughts. This seems to be a HUGE debate on the web: whether or not the MFT crop means you increase the aperature. Some are saying no it only changes DOF. I haven't seen a good test to confirm this.

    • @JonBear
      @JonBear  Před 4 lety +1

      The speedbooster multiplication applies to the original aperture of the lens. So 1.8 becomes 1.2 (the ui on the camera also displays it a 1.2)
      Then if you want to find out the full frame equivalent, you can do the 2x multiplication guideline to get an estimate of 2.4 equivalent.
      In the end we're talking about equivalents so it's hard to be accurate. For me the results speak for themselves. This combo is amazing for me 😁🤙 hope this helps.
      And yes I think the 2x multiplication is only to estimate equivalent DOF, not light. Like a ton of comments have pointed out 👍👍

The adapter fits fine on the GH5 but no matter what I do, no matter how I try to attach it, It wont connect. 100 percent! The in-body stabilization of the GH5 is unbelievably good. Panning the camera is very smooth and I can also move with it if I do the ninja walk. You can check my desert safari video, there are some walking shots there, at nighttime where I didn't shoot slomo so that I could keep the shutter speed low. Still is stable!
      Another trick is to film at 30fps then interpret the footage to 24 frames, so the slight slomo smooths out walking shots, but you barely notice that everything is in slow-motion, and everything gets a dreamy smooth vibe to it.
