- An in-depth video account of my 2014 summit of K2 to raise awareness and research funds for Alzheimer's Disease. I, Alan Arnette, became the oldest American at age 58 and the 18th American to summit K2. We summited on my birthday, July 27, 2014.
The video starts with our arrival in Islamabad, then the journey via planes, and FJ Cruiser's to the "end of the road" at Askole where the 80-mile trek to K2 Base Camp begins. Hiking over the Baltoro Glacier is an adventure in its own right.
Once at Base Camp, we visit the Gilky Memorial to remember those who have died in these mountains. The climb on K2 begins at Advance Base Camp with a steep 1,000-meter (3,000 ft) climb to Camp 1. After acclimatization rotations as high as C2, the summit push begins near the end of July. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Not sure if anyone else has commented on this already, but what touched me the most is how you showed respect to the sherpas by putting their names first at 27:46. Thank you for this.
For me, I couldn't have done this without them. Thanks.
Yes, I agree. The climbers have to climb, but the sherpas carry the food, set up the gear, everything, just so the climbers can climb. I wonder if anyone counts how many times the Sherpas summit.
The most inspiring K2 summit expedition was done by four Catalans in 2004.
They went up the Magic Line; climbed successfully only once before.
They had no Sherpas help! The four men established their own routes, safety lines & advanced camps.
They went up & down dozens of times to build & stock up camps 1, 2, 3, 4. None used oxygen. Four men doing everything from base camp.
Only 1 of the 4, Jordi Corominas, summitted K2 at night, by himself.
He would then descend down the other side of mountain, via Bottleneck & Abruzzi ridge. Alone, at night, without existing safety ropes, or oxygen.
He made it back!
One climber (Matta) succumbed to Peritonitis after returning to base camp.
Here is there amazing & tragic climb. czcams.com/video/BMxkv_3GcBc/video.html
A great video made even better because of your decision to NOT lay an obnoxious music track over the sights and sounds of the mountain.
Lol
Hi tom
I complitly agree with you
Absolutely right. The natural sounds mase me feel I was with them ( in spirit at least)
Everything bis jazzy boo you man 👍👏
As an Irishman, my jaw dropped when you pointed out Ger Mc Donnel's memorial. In his passing, he was such an inspiration as he was in his life. The first Irish man to summit K2!
This is such an inspiring video. Thanks Alan!
Thanks Philio, it was an honor to sped time with him, albeit short in 2006 on Broad Peak.
@@AlanArnetteClimbs Were you worried about the descent because that's even more dangerous as you are more tired. Congrats on summiting one of the hardest mountains in the world.
Not only that, McDonnell would climb & free the three men who were entangled in their ropes, hanging off the mountain. (2 Koreans & a Sherpa).
Minutes after freeing them, an ice avalanche took McDonnell.
Sadly, the three men he freed, plus another Sherpa, would get hit by a subsequent ice fall. All four would perish!
Excellent video. No music, no absurd speech just the K2 and its nature. Perfect..
I appreciate that, Mehmet. I like to let the experience speak for itself.
Filming while climbing is toughest job. And you done this with tremendous work. Hats off to ur efforts. God bless everyone!!!!
Very kind. Thank you Raja
The interesting thing is climbing the world's hardest mountain at the age of 58 is not a joke , you have achieved a fabulous record , many congratulations and thanks for the sharing
This man has the right attitude towards mountain climbing, meek, humble and happy.
Thanks Doug, appreciate your comment. Always respect the locals, the mountains, and teammates.
This literally made me feel like I was climbing up K2, great video man, raw emotions. Much love from Pakistan and subscribed.
I'm watching it today in 2020 . My country pakistan is now much amazing. Hope you will visit it again.
What trips me out the most is that K2 truly seems like a living entity all it's own.
I think after summiting k2 and Everest....life will be so easy and handy...cuz you guys are already did the toughest job....congratulations.
i am mountaineer from Balochistan Pakistan i have summited all my province's mountains but thinking about K2 is amazing and you Guys filmed all the way to K2 and summit that savage mountain on 27July 2014. entire video is amazing and thank you very much you all are invincible. great summiters you are. Love from Quetta. Balochistan
Very kind, Inayatullah. You have a beautiful country.
@@AlanArnetteClimbs have a good time sir
love you from a core of heart. I glade you replied me. You are great.
Not sure if you are still reading the comments but man, man. Mad respect. I can't describe how amazing this is. All of us are going to vanish one day, but till the last day you must be proud of what you have achieved.
Well done.
Thank you Mastro, you are very kind. I am very proud of my climbing achievements given I was born and grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River :) but more proud of the awareness and research money I have raised to find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease. AD took my mom, Ida. Thanks again, I really appreciate your comment.
You’re a true badass. And on top of that your fantastic attitude throughout the whole thing makes you seem like a good guy. Climb on, brother
Thanks Jumbo, doing what I can.
Oy I got freaked out just by the drive to Ashkole - the waterfall crossing and the narrow bridges. I'd never even make it to the base of the mountain. Thank you for not adding music or creating extra drama. You climbed for a good cause.
The drivers are excellent!
@@AlanArnetteClimbs those old Toyotas they had are beautiful.
This really is an amazing video. Nice to see smiles on K2 instead of all the doom and gloom. This really shows how big and steep it really is!!
Absolutely stunning. I can't even imagine how beautiful that view from the summit is.
That 128km trek from Askole is definitely part of what makes K2 even better. This is hardcore
I'll stick to climbing in and out of bed, but a lot of respect to the Sherpas, and the climbers (past and present) to have the stamina, endurance and sheer will of even trying to summit 8000m peaks. Thanks to folks like you, Alan, I can see some of the most amazing feats mankind can accomplish from the comfort of my own bed. (bc lord knows there's no way that risk is worth the reward for me personally). This stuff scares the shit out of me, yet is so fascinating I can't click away all at the same time.
Wow, what a fantastic video. No pumped up rock star crap or some ego fueled junkie talking about how great they are. Alan let the mountain speak for itself and what a voice it has. I really appreciate the effort that is needed to film up there and then edit so thank you and congratulations. Thumbs way up
You don’t have to watch.
I love the energy! Thank you for sharing this experience with us Sir. Much respect.
You are really great human on this planet, being as a neuroscientist I really inspired. God bless you and love from Pakistan, and prayers for our Ali and his team return.
Great video! I love the fact that Sherpas are recognized for their huge help to make this climb a success.
Hey Alan, congratulations on sumitting K2. That was hell of a climb and you captured your climb so beautifully, truly enjoyed your video from start to finish. I have seen now so many K2 videos but this was the best, nicely explained every part of the whole expedition. Our hero Ali Sadpara died with his two companions recently, I salute to their bravery. Thanks Alan once again and wish you more successful summits.
Amazing videos Alan! I can watch these all day...you certainly are living life to the fullest!
Wow, that was amazing. My 1st video of someone climbing any summit!! Breath taking and brilliant achievement...
Thanks for the upload, this was a great vid. It's nice seeing a longer-form K2 vid that isn't primarily focused on the doom and gloom of falling ice or descent's gone awry. Congrats on the summit, your personal and team achievements, and a big thank you for all your work with Alzheimer's non-profits!
Thanks, I really appreciate your comment.
Thank You Alan for sharing amazing journey. Respect from Pakistan 🇵🇰
You're amazing Alan, thank you for everything you do I know it's not easy covering this brutal sport
In my opinion, one of the best k2 climbing videos i have watched. Congratulations!
Thanks for taking us along for the journey. Y'all made it look so easy.
Enjoy the logistics of getting to K2, interacting with the locals, the road trip, hike in etc. Congrats on the summit!
Top 2/3 climbing teams ever assembled. Champions who did it for a great cause. It's really good to watch humble professionals
If you have a Great Courage & Strong Determination, then you can do whatever you want. You can summit every peak. You also have described many details in this video. Bravo Alan!
Thank you so much for the documentary. What a beautiful summit K2!
Alan, I love your video and have watched it dozens of time. Kudos to you for dedicating yourself to such an important cause and for making the unreachable reachable.
Thank you.
I love how you show the rides in the jeep etc and the difficulty in just getting to the base
I love how pure Kami's smile is. You guys are amazing. What a beautiful journey. More power to you.
His smile is magic!!
I like very much that you didn't just show the climb, but also how you got there, and the descent. Makes it so much more complete!
Thanks, appreciate your comment. My goal was to document, in real-time through blogging that year, the good, bad and ugly - up and down. It took a few years to get to creating this video but I'm glad I did to share with many more.
Hands down, one of the best K2 videos out there. Thank you for sharing your amazing experience with us!
Thanks Alan a lot for your answer and explanation. Wish you health and joy in life.
Looked like you summited easily, but like so many others, you were struggling on the way down! Glad you made it!
The journey from Skardu to Askole looks adventurous in itself. I'm not a mountaineer, so I will never climb K2, but I wish to at least get to just the base camp itself. For me that would be the adventure of a lifetime.
There’s Everest base camp hikes that you can do. I am going to try and do one once coronavirus restrictions ease
Kom lets go together
You have become my number 1 hub for all Mount Everest news. I've watched all your summits that I can find on youtube. I really enjoyed your K2, & Mount Everest adventures. Plus your most enjoyable podcast about all news Everest! Congratulations on all your marvelous summits!
Appreciate this Beth.
You and your team made it look so easy and simple! Blown away.
A very good video.. Felt like I was climbing K2 summit with you brave guys... Wonderful..!
I live in Paksitan and have visited places quite close to K2 but man I would never have the courage to do this. I salute u!
Alan this was amazing thank you. Remarkable how these expeditions look in HD! Having watched a few 100 hours of documentaries every location you brought us to I felt the ghosts of those who encountered tragedy among them.
Thanks Matthew. Climbing K2 is an honor on on the shoulders of those before. I left humble with gratitude.
Thank you for sharing such wonderful, encouraging, beautiful and full of life video. You all are so wonderful people. This is life which never dies and pass trough all difficulties, cross through all mountains and fight with all blockers. But it remains forever. Can't stop appreciation for you guys.
An incredible achievement Alan. You did your loved ones proud.
Thank you for posting this video Alan it has not only amazed me and inspired me to work harder and aim higher! My mother also has alzheimer's and I appreciate your efforts and contributions to the research funds. I have recently started climbing only as a personal journey but after watching this I aim to raise some funds to help others whilst continuing on my journey thanks to you🙏
Thanks Luke, you made my day. One of goals for climbing and Alzheimer's work is to inspire others to find their passion and purpose and pursue with all the have. I wish you the best.
I have seen number of documentaries and videos... Bt this one is really precise and comprehensive... Luv to watch it again and again
Yes, I can only agree for what a fantastic video about climbing K2! Congratulation Alan, age is just a figure have You showed us!
this is awesome and rare footage of k2, thanks for showing us the beautiful mountain and congrats on the accomplishment
This is hell of a journey with the magnificent purpose! Thank you for this video!
Excellent video, stunning views of majestic mountains and the best trekking in the world. Great hospitality and breathtaking views!
One of the best K2 videos on CZcams. So in depth. Congrats
Appreciate that
Looks like you had a great team. Thank you for sharing this video, your adventure is quite inspiring!!! Amazing seeing your honor for your mother as well.
Thank you Robert.
I get that feeling of taking a dive on a roller coaster down in my lower gut watching these guys summit on video. I can only imagine what it feels like actually doing it. I could never do it, I’d lock up.
I've just climbed this wonderful mountain in 33 mins..gosh I'm knackered 🤗..on a more serious note a massive welldone to all you guys..sadly I've had asthma all my life so lungs have never been great but I take enjoyment in your adventures..keep shining and climbing🤗
Awesome guys!!! Thank you for sharing this beautiful journey!
This is one of the best K2 videos I've ever seen. I love that you documented the whole journey starting from Skardu. Very impressive work sir. From myself and my aunt with early-onset Alzheimer's, thank you for helping with research, and congrats on your amazing experience. It's great TV while stuck here in quarantine. I hope your pee has returned to normal color!!
Appreciate this Brian and so sorry about your aunt - horrible for everyone involved. All systems are nominal now! :) :)
Dude, this here is so awe inspiring and uplifting what you doin here at 58 yrs old climbing the world's deadliest mountain ... this is heroic stuff and you are a huge legend ...
Not to hate but Annapurna is more deadly
Great job sir.... Real videos give sense like we are on K2. Thanks and best wishes for u
great video. No trash music. Thanks for a most splendid video sir
Excellent ! After the first winter climb in 2021 i thought let me see how difficult it is to climb k2 and this was the best documentary to watch!
What a wonderful job of climbing the invincible K2 ! Your footage and its editing makes it an outstanding piece of work
Wow thanks for filming. The 360° shot at the summit was something I've never seen. really powerful.
Thanks
Great video! It really doesn’t do justice to the life and death struggle he faced on the descent. I recommend everyone read Alan’s blog posts where he describes sitting down, prepared to die, satisfied with the summit as he was suffering from the effects of HAPE. Amazing story! Not many have both Everest and K2 summits - actually Alison Hargreaves was one (her plaque is shown in the video at base camp).
Thanks. Very kind.
Amazing video; also, such a respectful person. Kudos to giving honour to the Sherpas by naming them first in the list of summiters at 27:46 . Respect from the UK to you, Sir.
You guys were amazing. Wonderful photography. Loved watching
Hi, what a noble cause. One of the best capture of K2 climb. Some of those views looking straight down are unbelievably heart stopping. I am amazed at your courage. Thanks
Thanks Gerald.
This is the best video i watched for years. Thanks for such a nice coverage and leaving those music tracks out of the video. Natural and best.
Keep Growing. love from Pakistan
Glad you enjoyed it.
Amazing video. Thank you for giving us this view we would otherwise never see.
Alan, thank you so much for this great film. I have been reading a lot about K2 over the years, this made me se it up close. Great job, and i really like that you went there with a purpose and to honor. Respect, and congratulations to you and the team on reaching the summit. Best, Michael from Denmark Scandinavia
You're welcome to visit at least the base camp
it was so awesome you did that man much much appreciated, just come here to feel how much hard it is as my bro Ali Sadpara got missing here in winter without oxygen
This is one of the best videos on youtube. I have to watch it at least once a year. Just an amazing channel overall as well.
Thanks for posting this Alan. Thom Pollard sent me. This is a great journey well documented. And a huge congrats to you and all involved.
Thanks Thom is always fun to speak with.
What a great video! The beautiful views, as you all ascended to each camp, are both terrifying, and exhilarating! It's also nice to watch a video of K2 in which all climbers make the summit, and all make it back to base camp. Very cool.
Health issues keep me from being able to climb, but I still enjoy reading & watching videos/film about climbing the world's highest peaks. Inspiring, to say the least. The images from the highest peaks are jaw-dropping and mesmerizing.
Thank you, Mr. Arnette, for sharing so much with us, via your channel. I have subscribed, and look forward to enjoying more of your videos.
Thank you Reid, very kind. I’m grateful and humbled for this experience.
Respect! This looks so difficult and scary on so many levels, that I cannot but admire your achievement! I would never dream to do such a thing, so thank you for making this video and make us others part of this great adventure - from the coziness of our sofas!
The son of my cello teacher Galen Rowell attempted the K2 climb. He spent a week on a ridge above 20,000 ft in a blizzard. He didn’t make it to the top but he didn’t lose his life on the mountain. Galen Rowell took pictures of my hand position on the cello and bow that is in his mother’s book “Prelude to String Playing.” Galen Rowell lost his life in a plane crash.
Man that's tragic...I'm sure he was a great human being and y'all will cherish the beautiful memories he left behind.
Enjoyed that.Just finished a book about K2 and this video brought it all to life for me.
breathtaking footage! We can feel this incredible effort and fight for the summit while watching! I've just read a few books about K2, now I can experience what I read about thanks to you :)
Thanks. L2 was special. It was the most difficult and one fo the most rewarding climbs I've done of my 35+
Amazing video. It is unbelievable that a human can climb K2. Congratulations to your achievement.
Glory. I now get the going down being harder than up. You are exhausted. Sick. And can see down. The trip out would challenge me. Thanks for sharing. Be proud!
Absolutely incredible video wow. Can't believe how sharply defined the mountains are at the road. Like flat road, then instant mountain inches away. Amazing place
K2 and 3 other 8000 ranges mountains are in Shigar Pakistan.I belong to this beautiful valley Shigar.I never went at k2 base camp but one day I will definitely go there (Inshallah).I love these hardworking porters of Shigar who carry more than 35 kg weight from Askoli to K2 base camp more than 200 km to make both end meet.My father used to go k2 when I was 5 years old.I love my father who is my hero and my roll model. I also love K2 ,Gharashabrum 1,grashabum2 ,grashabrum 3 ,4 and broadpeak and all the hardworking porters. ❤️
Baruch Hashem, one day you will be able to accomplish your dream ❤
climbing up and down while filming....incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got chills watching you.
Amazing achievement to reach the summit of K2 at your age Alan, very inspiring that age is no barrier its down to mental toughness and being sensible respecting the mountain and the elements.
Thanks Lee. I’m very grateful to a wonderful team, a decent weather window, good preparation and experience plus a dash of luck.
A beautiful video for a beautiful cause 🌸 I've watched many, many videos and documentaries on climbing, and yours was one of the best I have seen. The weather was gorgeous.
Thank you for bringing us along for the journey. Cheers.
Thanks! Sincerely appreciate your kind feedback
Thank you for this video!! One of the few honest portrayals of what this is like. Most everything else is an overproduced docudrama
Glad you enjoyed it!
What an amazing feat! Thanks for taking us along.
Congratulations on summiting K2 :) Excellent video. Was on the edge of my seat for part of that climb, felt like I was right there at times. Well done on getting back down without incident.
Appreciate this
That was probably the finest 8:00AM of your life! Congrats Sir, I am deeply envious of your accomplishment, something to be proper proud of. My Grandfather had Alzheimer’s and know where you are coming from!
Thanks BW
Mentioning the sherpas first! Respect!
Beautiful view, nice weather you had!
Thankyou Alan....
Always enjoy all your mountaineering news, reports. Great team energy here and yea thx for leaving music off this.
It's breathing and wind...
Amazing....
Thanks Pete, very kind of you. I did consider putting something from The HuU in the background for the summit push! NOT!! :)
Alan how cool of you to comment!!
It may be the closest I ever get to K2...
If you ever lead a trip to Concordia I would very much love to come...be a teammate.
Beautiful video and congrats to you for climbing K2.
You're awesome. It's great to see this from the safety of my house, too, but sending mighty high fives and thanks to you, Alan, for fundraising. Godspeed and happy trails forever. ♡ ;^)
hey Alan been reading your website for a while, thank you for this great video. keep doing what you're doing!
I love the way you respect people. Well done to a beautiful trip on K2
