I really appreciate Holland's understanding of scriptures on this point. It's very much needed, particularly at this time in the history of many local Baptist churches currently falling prey to this lie about God's sovereignty, nature and the sincerity of His genuine love for the whole of his own creation.
There is a poor definition of God's 'sovereignty' that requires Him to control every molecule at every second in an unchangeable manner which He has already pre-determined from before time. Which makes God inherently culpable for every unimaginable atrocity. As Holland points out. This definition creates an unexplainable conundrum as it relates to God's 'goodness' from which it's adherents cannot escape, many seek relief by rejecting the existence of God.
Attempts at Compatibilism offer no refuge, only cognitive dissonance.
In my view, THIS is the problem with 'reformed'/Calvinist teaching at it's core. Those accepting this false premise as truth have fallen prey to the same lie Satan posed to Eve in the Garden. The effect is to foster fundamental doubt in the goodness of God, as it correlates to the very conscience God gave to all men, and, after the fall, the 'knowing' of good and evil. It unavoidably causes them to question if God can ever be trusted.... bringing into doubt His character, His very nature, the fact that He truly IS "Love"... not as an adjective, but a noun. Calvinistic interpretations of scripture and beliefs literally perpetuate Satan's original lie, and aid in accomplishing its goal.
