5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
    2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
    1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

I love that channel and usually my taste aligned with the reviews but for this one is the complete opposite. I've been playing that game for a few weeks now and it's one of my best quick solo game. A game took around 30 min and I disagree with having no choice at all- there always choices to make and sometimes, the obvious one is not always the best one. I've been playing it also 2-player with a friend and we both likes it very much. If you came here to make a decision on buying that game or not, I would definitely recommend watching another video also just to get a second opinion.

it seems the game developer should ask for a refund for this preview because almost everyone says the same thing

Thanks for your review! I really like "Mini Rogue". I had the print & play version, then I backed the Kickstarter. I think it really gives the feel of an unpredictable "roguelike" video game. For me it's much more fun experience than "Set a Watch" (which I didn't like at all) and "One Deck Dungeon". Have a great day! 🙂

Hi Alex, I may or may not always agree with your reviews, but I love the way you review games.
I have never played this game, nor the video game, but I am aware that your review is quite at odds with other reviews of this game.
What I really like about your reviews are that you don't just say that you don't like the game, you explain what aspects of the game you don't like - randomness, lack of variability, etc. I know people are saying that randomness is part of the genre, but I am able to judge for myself whether I am comfortable with Randomness or not.
Really appreciate your channel and the way you do things. Keep up the great work!

I think that one have to remember that Mini Rogue is based upon the retro Rogue-like PC games, which is intended to have a very random nature by design. In addition, one actually have more player agency in Mini Rogue than it can seem at first - To give an example, I almost never lose Mini Rogue anymore, while I know other players who find it very difficult, including myself then I first started to play. In other words, the decisions one make and which ressources one puts priority to, does matter. So I do believe it is wrong to criticize a game for something which really is the point of its genre. That said, I do agree that the decision space is much more limited within combat and especially in the skills checks - So, I do understand that you dislike it, if your main focus/preference is there.

I feel you need the "Depths of Damnation Expansion" to give it the variability and more things to do that the base game is missing. In addition, you get the Lore Cards too. IMHO, the high rating is coming from the backers from the KS. This is one of those cases where you need the expansion to make the game better. I believe the expansion would bump it to a 3 on your scale.

I feel the same, this game benefits a lot with the expansion. I like the quick setup and the easy gameplay mechanism.

Thanks for the honest review! Regarding your “other games to consider,” I’ve had “Set A Watch” on my list of older games to look into for a while. Is that one you’d say is good to play solo? Have you found it enjoyable and/or challenging?

Thank Alex. Appreciate your time & thoughts always. I can only agree, given your "show and tell" it certainly seems far too luck based with not enough mitigation or agency.
You mentioned "One Deck Dungeon" which I really do enjoy. Interested if you happen to come across "Deck Box Dungeon"? Interested in your thoughts on the latter. ❤️

      Same!
Alex is my favorite reviewer, because our taste in games align by huge margin, but this time I completely disagree.
Maybe I'm such fan of the game, because I love roguelikes a lot.
Also I have all expansions for Kickstarter, so that may add too.
I suggest trying PnP version or watching playthrough online before buying to see if it's really not your thing.
      Any ways thanks for review!

@@BoardGameCo I believe you are right about many of the things that people might dislike the game because of - However, I do also believe, that what you maybe have missed, is that Mini Rogue is meant to be a board game version of the classic retro Rogue-like video and PC games, which is very random by nature, and not has their decision space in the combat and skill checks, but mainly in the ressource management - In Mini Rogue's case, I do find that is more rewarding when one realizes that there actually is big difference on how good people are at the game. There are both people like me, who have a higher than 90 % win rate (I only lost the first many times I played), and those who lose almost every time, even after repeated plays.

First time I disagree with you on a review, I think a 2 is harsh. The game certainly is not a 5 but if you play with the promos and expansions it add more variability and a little bit more decision making. Also if you play the "campaign" at the back of the rulebook it adds a lot to the game and feels like the main way the game was intended to play.

      @johanvittrup1834 Před rokem +1

Yes, it is surely a hard pass, since it is one of the best light crawlers ever made! Not listen to people who not knows the founding concepts of the Rogue-like genre - Sorry for the confront to the review (I do really enjoy this channel), but to critize a Rogue-like of being random, is the same to criticize a Euro-game of being about strategy and engine building.
