@@M167A1 I've been using Linux for a good few years now, and I can't remember a time in recent history where the average computer user expressed much interest in Linux at all... A few techies here and there asking "So what's the deal with Linux?" or "So how's Linux compare to Windows these days?" That's about it... Until Windows 11 came along.
Since then, Linux-related forums have seen an astronomical surge of Windows 10 users exploring the possibility of jumping to Linux. And I'm not just talking tech bros and computer geeks. I'm talking regular, every-day folk who aren't very computer-literate at all, moms, dads, grandparents... People who have been using Windows operating systems as long as they've owned a computer. _That's_ who's inquiring about Linux. And they're not asking because they're particularly interested in Linux. Many enjoy Windows 10 and would like to keep using it, but Microsoft flipped them the bird and told them to buy a new PC.

I'm on Kubuntu Linux now and I haven't had so much fun using my computer, playing around on it, playing games on it and tinkering with it since the Windows 7 when I got my first own computer! 😁
I still have Windows 10 on an old Surface pro 4 that I currently don't use much anyway. Buying it was the biggest blunder I ever made, it worked for half a year and then a firmware update came that broke the type cover port and caused the battery to completely drain within a day, even if the tablet is shut down. Apparently this update has been on their server for two years already and they haven't bothered removing or fixing it despite numerous complaints about issues, probably because the tablet has already reached end of support by then. Folks, NEVER BUY HARDWARE FROM MICROSOFT (in fact, I'm not gonna buy anything from them anymore), turns out they test their firmware just as poorly as they test their OS updates!

      Absolutely!
I switched two weeks ago, I recommend you use your favorite Ubuntu or Mint flavor and stick to tutorials and forum posts on how to setup and do things, rather than figuring it out on your own. _"Don't stray from the beaten path if you don't know these woods",_ so to speak.
Also, I highly recommend manually partitioning your Linux boot drive with a separate /home partition, so you can keep all your settings in case you need to reinstall Linux or want to install a different version/flavor and make a generous swap partition, so you can run a powerful Windows VM in case there is one important thing you still need to use Windows for. It's much better and safer than dual booting. I didn't do that on my initial install and VMware player complained about not enough swap (even though it shouldn't need any) and the VM was barely usable due to copious lag. If you're not using any creative software, you probably won't need a Windows VM for anything, but it's a good idea to keep the option open, especially in the beginning of your OS transition. Again, google a good guide on how best to format your Linux boot drive. It should be easy to find.
I'm using Kubuntu 22.04 btw. KDE feels quite familiar when coming from Windows.

Putting ads in an Operating System is just WRONG! An OS should be software required to effectively and easily use the computer itself, along with whatever software the user of that computer chooses to install. OEM's have taken advantage of this and pushed their "free" software, which often causes lots of problems, and the "Free" software typically only works for a short period before requiring a license. An Operating system company forcing you to watch ads, and starting the installation of software THEY recommend in their Operating System is just wrong! The Operating system should be just what's required to use the computer. Everything else should be up to the user/owner of the computer to choose. Microsoft really needs to stop this and stick with what they used to be good at - making easy-to-use and maintain Operating Systems.
Regarding Linux as a "daily driver" replacement OS, most games are optimized for Windows, with ports of Playstation and Xbox in there. Optimizing games that you do manage to get installed and running on Linux is very likely going to be a nightmare in itself. For people that don't do much gaming, those like content creators, business users, and those that use their computers for watching movies, CZcams, would be fine with Linux... Until they get their first system crash during an update/upgrade cycle... Full brakes, confusion and frustration will follow...

I finally made the switch a couple weeks ago. Even having changed operating systems completely, the biggest differences by far are 1) My computer doesn't annoy me anymore, and 2) I don't feel like I'm constantly being disrespected by a corporation via the medium of the software running on my hardware that I bought and paid for.
I tried dual booting for a while but my gaming PC runs Nvidia and I don't care what anyone says, Linux + Nvidia + mutli-monitor (especially with different resolution, scaling, and refresh rates) is unusable. The nicest thing I can say about it is that sometimes it boots into a desktop environment. I blame Nvidia for this, just to be clear.
Linux + AMD on the other hand is a first-class computing experience. The solution I finally came to was leaving my gaming PC on Windows (and turned off 95% of the time) and buying an old low-power tiny Lenovo PC off of ebay and throwing in a cheap Radeon 6400. Combined with Debian 12 and KDE Plasma, this handles most of my daily computing needs. This has the added benefit of not having a power hungry heat generating PC running all the time sucking up electricity and spitting out tons of heat.
With all the work that Valve has put into making gaming on Linux a viable option, I suspect that if/when I upgrade my gaming PC with an AMD card it'll also get the Linux treatment. But what I'm doing now is a nice stop-gap solution.

Using Linux presents significant challenges, including the difficulty in configuring color printing, particularly with printers like HP, and the absence of a comprehensive office suite similar to Microsoft Office. Furthermore, the multitude of Linux distributions leads to excessive fragmentation and a lack of consistent software support. Moreover, the absence of game support for integrated GPUs from AMD and Intel processors makes problem-solving more difficult. Setting up WineHQ and its binaries is also a daunting task for many users. Ultimately, people seek the level of abstraction that Windows provides.

Your statement that "LibreOffice is MORE comprehensive than Office" is bullshit.
"On a technical level, Office actually sucks."
      ALSO PATENTLY bullshit.
The equation editor in LibreOffice SUCKS.
I tried writing my undergrad thesis with LibreOffice and the fact that you need to start a SEPARATE program to be able to produce math equations (math equations that NEVER rendered correctly) vs. it being built-in to your word processor, is stupid.
Word's equation editor is FARRRR superior compare to LibreOffice Writer and LibreOffice Math.
So, no, LibreOffice is NOT more comprehensive than Office.
If you pay for Office 365, you can actually live-edit Office docs from within the Office 365 suite (via browser accessed OneDrive, etc.).
To be able to live-edit LibreOffice documents, you will need to rely on a separate solution like NextCloud (which you can self-host for free), or FileCloud, which charges you $20/month/person, with a 6-person minimum for to get access to the live-edit feature, i.e. $1440/year, just so that you can live-edit your LibreOffice documents.
So far, my success rate for being able to open an ODS spreadsheet from a self-hosted NextCloud server is approximately 16-25%, which means that I will have to attempt opening my LibreOffice files multiple times before it will actually open for me.
"Furthermore, the multitude of Linux distributions leads to excessive fragmentation and a lack of consistent software support."
Fragmentation is ABSOLUTELY an issue with Linux.
There are things that work REALLY well on Redhat and Redhat-derived distros just as there are things that work really well on Debian and Debian-derived distros. (Arch, Alpine, and SLES work in their own unique way.)
As such, what works for one distro (or branch of distros) is NOT guaranteed to work on an entirely separate branch of distros.
So yes, fragmentation is ABSOLUTELY an issue with Linux.
(As I mentioned, I am running into that right now where I LITERALLY cannot run a rpm package, from Debian.)
"Just pick a ditro and stick with it, but do a little research."

I've been primarily Linux for decades (and I primarily use the terminal 😁). But I cannot be 100% Linux because I need some 3rd party software with support. That software is only supported for Windows and MacOS. It is time to ask again if it is supported in a Windows VM...
I was just about to argue that if they want to show me ads, the OS should be free. Then I remembered that the world has moved beyond "free with ads." Now it is "pay more for no (or fewer) ads." I think the first on this "pay more" model was Amazon Kindle. But now it is prevalent in video streaming such as Netflix and Amazon Prime (of course), and nearly every "pay for access" web service. Welcome to our future, where ads are everywhere, in everything, for everyone.

this week windows decided to be weird and suddenly turn off one of my SSDs for no reason, the only thing that stoped that gremlin from doing that was, backing up the data, wiping the drive with 00 on all sectors with parted magic. then restoring by hand the data. the drive was fine and healthy and working without any problem at all at linux, even working for hours in the parted magic fork, but windows straight out REFUSED to read the thing. i mean... just... wtf microsoft...

I know about adobe and couple of other programs but many people don't even need them at all. And if there were less problems with setting up games or portable software installs on linux so that even a dumb person could do it, Microsoft would be waaay more careful with their decisions.

List all the programs and games you use daily or weekly in Windows and see if those will work natively or have native Linux versions. For those that don't have native Linux versions, look up cross-platform Alternatives and practice using them in windows. Once you become comfy and competent using those and know that you can use those full-time as a real replacement for the former proprietary windows or Microsoft versions, that's over half the battle of being able to live comfortably in the Linux world."

This same issue doesn't occur if I connect to my cousin's router (both 5ghz and 2.4ghz)(his house is besides mine and he allows me to). It lets me use upto 30-35MB/s. More than windows even.

Good questions, other than the occasional m.s. botched releases it's normally not a problem( few times a year) Yes having a router level VPN for clients that are in office is always a better idea. I'm not sure how everyone else does it but it's also my preferred way of deploying VPN service and then have custom VPN rules for any devices that may not need the service for what ever reason. In the end yes use your VPN on your router instead of each device if that works for you but I doubt that will stop m.s from breaking things a few times every year.
