    “Rainy Days and Mondays”
    That’s my ABSOLUTE favorite by the Carpenters. There’s a line that says What Ive got they used to call the blues” genius way to describe Depression which was a taboo to sing or even talk much about back then because ppl didn’t understand it like we do now. Chilllllsss!!!! 💔💔

    When I was in boot camp in 1971, the company went together and bought an 8-track player. We voted and bought 3 cassettes: One as "Portrait" by the Fifth Dimension; the second one was the Carpenters first album, "Close to You;" and third one was either by Tammy Wynette or Loretta Lynn, I can't remember which one it was. We all had very good taste.

    • @stevetournay6103
      @stevetournay6103 Před 2 lety +3

      Gonna be "that guy" and point out that Close To You was Carpenters' second album (1970); their first (in 1969) was initially called Offering, later reissued as Ticket To Ride (their cover of that Beatles tune was their first single). But it was Close To You, the song itself and also the album (which also featured We've Only Just Begun), that made Carpenters a global sensation.

We had all grown up hearing that beautiful voice on our parents stereos, and you couldn’t help but know every song. Anorexia was a big topic back then, and it really was crazy someone so famous and gifted died of it. Richard. Still with us at age 76, and still a fine pianist. He tried to carry on with a solo recording career after Karen passed, but of course it could never be the same, and ultimately he became a kind of guardian and archivist for Carpenters' recorded legacy, overseeing several retrospectives and compilations.
    Some of his post-Carpenters work is wonderful in its own right:
    Karen's Theme (from the TV biopic on KC)
    When Time Was All We Had
    Something In Your Eyes (these two from the 1987 Time album; the latter features Dusty Springfield singing lead and was a modest radio hit in Canada and Australia)

    The exceptional quality of her vocals remains a dissertation in and of itself. THAT SAID, the production of this tune as a full composition, beginning through end, was/is brilliant on Richard's part. The thick vocal cluster at the climax, coming up JUST before her solo-voice closing, is the stuff of perfection. WOW. Seamless from top to bottom.

    As I have said before do a review on her playing the drums. You truly see her bubbly personality shine through. She was so full of life in those videos. And please watch the movie about her it is on youtube. My heart ached for her she only wanted to be loved and have a family. Also Little Girl Blue is an awesome story about her life.

    What a beautiful song, written by Paul Williams and sung perfectly by the late, great Karen Carpenter. This is what great music is all about. Timeless.
