My books and videos are all grounded in what I actually do, I make sure you can see the evidence. For example if I suggest sowing carrots in November, take a look at my monthly tours to see them growing and my harvest videos for May to see the actual results. I'm not just about regurgitaing information from the backs of seed packets!
Just because all my resources are 'free of charge', to everyone, doesn't mean they aren't good quality. My objective is to make sure that there's no need to be rich to get access to great gardening information. I do however have a lot of costs to cover and my time is valuable to me, so please consider supporting me at www.buymeacoffee.com/steveric...
First year trying early tomatoes in hanging baskets (usa zone 7, former 6b) . Followed your videos closely since start (feb sowing, etc etc). Didn't have same varieties as yours but did get several different ones to try out. Unheated poly. When you said started to heat to 10c we still had nights dropping to 3-4c (alot). Only fed once with fish fertilizer. Have to say results are amazing. We usually just plant out tomatoes after Mothers Day (May 12th) . Yet i have gorgeous hanging baskets loaded with tomatoes in my poly. No red ones yet but ready to turn any time soon (we had horrible cold wet spring). Great guidance, Steve! Definitely repeating it again next year, with some more feeding :).
Ditto on the wet spring and winter too for us. Tomatoes seem fairly happy at 3-4c, I'm mainly heating for the peppers, cucumbers and courgettes. The extra heat seems to help a little though, the stems seem thicker for example, so they are able to carry the weight : All the best - Steve
As ever Steve, another completely inspirational and educational video. Many thanks.
Interesting technique to extend the season, almost a hydroponic system for the greenhouse baskets.I don’t have a greenhouse but it would be nice to have tomatoes even a month earlier out of the polytunnel .Thanks for the information
yes, I often think of growing in hanging baskets like this as a poor mans hydroponic
Now that's a challenge for me for next year. I've put my little heater back on in the porch on cooler nights and it's made a huge difference.
What type of tomatoes did you grow Cherie, were they cordons?
I've not had any heating on in May myself, only in April, a few plants like the cucumbers are a little stressed, but still producing : All the best - Steve
I made the mistake of growing cordons. I was too keen to get started. I didn't have any tumbling tomato seeds but do now. It's been really cold at night here. Down to 7 degrees and my cucumber plants weren't liking it at all.
Really helpful - thank you!
Never tried a tumbler tomatoes, might have to give it a try next year. My tomotes are just getting flowers and some fruit on them. Your tomatoes are looking great
definitely worth a try, you get a lot more fruits but over a much shorter time : All the best - Steve
@@SteveRichards yea, I love tomatoes, so the earlier the better
Hi Steve, when do you sow the Sun Gold for autumn?
I sowed them a few weeks ago, but I will probably root some side shoots and use those in late June
Do you help your tomatoes with pollination e.g shaking the plants or anything?
Back in early April I brushed them lightly with my hand when I walked past, from late April onwards no
Steve, how many plants do you Putin each hanging basket?
Just one, the plants are huge
Do you have an idea of the capacity of your hanging baskets? I’m guessing around 8 litres?
good guess, pi*r2*15cm = 9.3 L, but the baskets not completely full and the base tapers in so 8L is about right, bigger would be better
@@SteveRichards Thanks!
With shop price rises, I think £12 is actually low. I think looking at the amount picked it's more like £20
I prefer to be conservative when calculating cost/benefits : All the best - Steve
Those hanging basket are different to the green ones
Is there any advantage?
They look nicer, are slightly bigger and much older, you can't buy them anymore unfortunately : All the best - Steve
@@SteveRichards oh, thank you.
Wow, I can't believe you have been picking tomatoes all month Steve. I started Tumber and Patio Red in February and only just in full flower now. They were kept in a heated greenhouse with lights too.
Do you think it is too late to start some Red Profusion now? I can get a delivery tomorrow.
It's definitely not too late, but I'm not sure you will get any advantage from them compared to Tumbler, when sown late, but you can try : All the best - Steve
not all month Lynn, I started just over a week ago
@@SteveRichards I gave some basket tom plants to my daughter so now feel lacking...lol. I'm going to have a go Steve. My strawberries are nearly ready to come out of the baskets now.
I'm composting mine after I root some runners for next year : All the best - Steve
Can you please buy a energy meter. Please publish your results on how many kw you have used for heating and light.
I used £50 of electricity in late March and April on heating the greenhouse, I'm not sure how many KW that was, as I was only interested in the cost and I'm on a variable rate tariff, my monitor plug tracks electricity cost. I have another video soon where I go through the total harvest and costs. I'm not investing any more on energy meters as all I'm interested in is making sure that my harvest value easily covers the costs, which it does : All the best - Steve
Thanks for the quick response. Keep up the great work. I really enjoy your videos. Please do more how to grow videos on individual plants.
@Dave-hr7yl this was to be the year of the masterclass videos on each type of veg covered in my ebook, last year I did a set of basics videos for a seed company. Anyway I then had a cycling accident which put me way behind and I’m still suffering from the minor brain trauma, hence the memory stumbles in my videos. So it will now be next year!
I got 2 so far off my tumblers and they look like they are a month old still 😂
It's certainly not been great growing weather Christie : All the best - Steve
Great crop. my tumblers are poor in comparison
as are mine, but mine have plenty of time
As a measure I’ve started my toms indoor and put them outside a fortnight ago no grow lights no feed. Same time zone and mine are covered in flowers but no fruits yet
So that’s where mine were 7 weeks ago, which makes sense : all the best - Steve
