So one of the awesome things about the BCH3120 course at uOttawa is that a song contest is held where the students are challenged to write a song about the TCA (Kreb's) Cycle. I decided to also add a little glycolysis in here as well, just because I figured that it worked well. I had a whole lot of fun making this, and hopefully you can enjoy this and maybe learn a thing or two! Thanks to Dr. Mary-Ellen Harper for this ingenious idea.
Lyrics:
[Hook]
I'm gonna pop some carbs
Only got a lil' glucose in my pathway
I - I - I'm lazy, lookin' for some CoA
This is frigging awesome
[Verse 1]
Now I got some glucose; hell yeah, I'm in that prep phase
I'm so pumped; doin' work with hexokinase
Glucose to the glucose with a number six phosphate
PGI to that fructose 6-phosphate (dayum)
ATP, ADP, phosphofructokinase E,
1,6-bis, FBP, adolase, two GAP;
GAPDH with some PGK & PGM,
3-P to the 2-Phosphoglycerate, and then
(Enolaaaaaaaassseeee)
PEP to Pyruvate! (glycolysis)
[Verse 2]
FAD, NAD bout to go and grab some hydroG
Pumpin' out all those substrates for some work yeah that's that energy
shuttlin' through that mito-C like nobody's business
what you know about oxidation? biz-NITCH
I'mma do it TCA, I'mma do it TCA
No for real - movin' on - can I have some A-CoA? (thank-you)
Citrate synthase from that CoA to that citrate
Aconitase, step two; isocitrate
I had some NAD+ (plus), I used some NAD+ (plus)
I made some NADH (Hhhhhhhh), and alpha-ketogluterate (oh snap)
dehydrogenase complex, plus some CoA
CO2, NADH out; succinyl CoA
then I take that GDP, add a P (GTP), hold on wait
CoAs gone, people be like "Aw, he got the succinate"
[Hook x2]
[Verse 3]
What you know about intermediary metabolism? (not much)
What you knowin' about what's goin' on in your skin? (uhhhhh)
I'm diggin, I'm diggin, I'm lookin' for some FAD
Step 6, succinate dehydrogenase, that's the key (zing)
Movin' on, reducin' that FAD up to FADH2
fumarate, fumarase that's the enzyme now go shift your gaze
to malate (okay); step 8, malate dehydrogenase
finish off; NADH, oxaloacetate (ahhhhh)
[Hook x2]
[Bridge x2]
That's how Kreb's cycle goes
If you didn't doze now you know
This is how TCA flows
BCH actually doesn't blow
[Hook]
(alpha-ketogluteraaaaaaaaaate) - Hudba
This song made me hate myself but helped me pass biochemistry. 10/10
"Awww...he got a succinate."
Boss.
Seriously the most underrated video on CZcams -- I've been coming back to this for the past two years for biochem classes & the MCAT!!
That's wicked! My favorite part about everything is when you guys come on and tell me that this video is actually helping people learn. A huge thanks to all of the instructors out there who incorporate this into their lessons! Biochemistry is awesome.
Love the innovation. I have been a college professor for 30 years, most of them at a community college and I love using catchy tunes to make the facts go in the old noggin with ease. I used to make up my own in pod med school many years ago. I show your Kreb's cycle video in my Physio classes to show them the transfer of energy--it takes all the trepidation (and boredom) out of the students who dread the biochemistry aspect of energy discussions. Thank you!
I banned my wife from singing the original version of this song while
I'm studying for the metabolism section of my biochem course. Now she be
like, "PEP to PYRUVATTEEEE!"
I cannot believe this is from 10 years ago! This is so awesome, it's helping me study for the MCAT!
Yeah, everyone is saying this, but I'll say it too: I am legitimately using this song to study for my Biochem final tomorrow. Thank you guys. I wish there were more songs like this for the difficult things to memorize. The only other one I've heard that was any good was for the EM spectrum, and I've never forgotten it since. :)
did you just write the song lyrics or listen over and over again?
I listened over and over and memorized the lyrics.
Tyler thing is this isn’t really hard to memorize
Mentally, I never recovered from this.
Finals are coming up in 2 weeks and I am going to memorize this song and sing it during my biochem final and ace this exam with this song's help! :)
SAAAAAAAAME
Just memorize it by making it a phrase
how'd it go?
Well I got my degree in Biochemistry so it worked~
I don't know which phrase you can make up.
In french, For the krebs part, it goes this way
"Si le Citron (Citrate) Isole (Isocitrate) L'acétone (a-Ketoglutarate), alors le Succint (Succinyl coa) succès (succinate) fumera (fumarate) Moins (malate) Haut (OxaloAcétate)"
And for the reaction type, well, it's easy to find out if you know every Krebs molecules
This video taught me more than my teacher did the last 3 months. The lyrics are amazing and they flow SOOOO well. Please keep making videos like this!
I remember watching this in high school lol unfortunately almost 10 years ago. No idea how I remembered all this stuff. Thanks Mr. Bedford
That is so wicked haha - thanks! I tried to make it fun to listen to, but also informative. It's pretty crazy that your teacher showed you guys this! Totally mind-blowing. Good luck with your studies!
I am doctor now for a year. It still amazes me how the fuck i passed biochemistry knowing every single reaction with coenzyme etc
I've been coming back to this for years! This has helped me survive biochemistry, exercise metabolism, nutrition classes, and now the MCAT. Thank you for such a great video!
I've been listening to this like every day for the past two weeks. This is freaking awesome.
we got the same in french made by our teachers, and i gotta tell, this one is a blessing next to our french version
Just had a nerdgasm. This is great! You should totally make more of these!
wow what has my life has come to that im watching this
Saying what's going on in your skin and then saying im digging should be illegal LMAO
I tried to memorize this song for biochem hahahaha love it!!!!!!
IS GOOD
I love u
Had I seen this 3 years ago, I wouldn't have failed that exam.
You're the reason why my Biochem exam in two days is something I'm looking forward to.
@wilsonlam and @1MaginAZN SERIOUSLY this is the best Pathway song out there. Have you made anymore for the other pathways like Electron Transport, UREA cycle, AA metabolism, Pentose -phosphate, ETC? Because the world of science needs your help!!!
why was this not around when I had to learn all those gosh darn molecules?
My professor show us this in class today. I'm so glad this exists. I was nervous that I would have trouble remembering all the steps. This is helping tremendously and I feel much better about it. Excellent job and thank you!
I love this break down of the Krebs Cycle!
I have no reason to learn this but I now WANT to just to hear this song with it! Thanks! :)
This is simply amazing. Helps me learn better than all the videos in my language.
This is friggin awesoooomee...jus luv it
this is frigging awesome!!!
I've already listened to it four times...I LOVE THIS!
Fuck that shit...
it's always hard
You guys are effing brilliant :-) Thanks for making this!
That's incredible! I'm glad that you enjoyed it!
I managed to forget about this song until 10 minutes ago when I was listening to music on my phone and thrift shop started playing. I'm probably going to have this song stuck in my head for the next week at least
Okey it official, this is how i'm going to study for bio from now on
You can now download the official audio track for this video! Downloads are on a "Name your price" basis, so you can download for free or choose to support me if you're awesome. Check out the description for details. Thanks everybody!
1MaginAZN can you please post the lyrics in the comment section?? it would help soooo Much with my homework!!!😄
This is hilarious! Love it!
It's on repeat atm.
I needed this
YOU'RE A GENIUS. making my nerd side tingle
This is actually the best thing ever
49 people have never had an enjoyable biology class.
this might be my new favorite thing on the internet
You have saved my MedChem grade. Thank you, good sir. You deserve a medal for this.
making this my ringtone right now.
alpha-ketagluterateeeee(^^)
awesome man. I hope you're gonna do more of this type of video. It makes biochem much more fun to study! :D
downloaded and on loop. Thanks
The most epic educational rap I've heard so far. This is the first song that didn't make me groan and roll my eyes. Hell of a job.
That was AMAZING! i love the dude that whispered glycolysis
freaking GENIUS
I have a final on this tomorrow and I'm so glad I discovered this.
After 2 years I still sometimes wake up rapping "Yeah for real, moving on, can I have som A-CoA- a-go citrate synthase from that CoA to the citrate, A-conitase step 2 iso-citrate. I had some NAD+, I used some NAD+, I made some NADH and a-keto-glutarate" I mean, my first year Biomed biochem module exam section on TCA was a joke thanks to this. But.. You knows. Can you call it a "mnemonic" if you basically memorize all the steps in song form?
What do you think the Bible was? Many of the books were songs. Music is the best mnemonic.
This has been invaluable when studying for AP Bio, well done!
this is hilarious and honestly helpful, well done
You, sir, are a god. This officially made my awesome list.
this is really freaking awesome
Awesome!!! And LOVE that Canadians put this one together! Way to go!! Wish this was around when I was in school...
Your video was shown in our Chem class at University of Washington! We all enjoyed it, great job!!
My favourite bit is the bit with all the biochem
This is glorious! I love it!
Instead of reading my biochem textbook. I lost to this song. I passed biochem.
I love this song!
this is BRILLIANT!!!
bruuhhhhhhh you killed thisssss!!!
This NEEDS more views!!!!
