KD0BQS - SDR# AirSpy with SpyServer - Beginner Guide

  • Update: As of 07/03/2021 I'll likely keep this SDR Sharp SpyServer system online (sdr://sdr.kd0bqs.com:5555) in addition to OpenWebRX (rx.kd0bqs.com). I was considering a complete move to OpenWebRX, but a few folks have asked me to keep it online and they even provided new hardware so I can keep both systems online! Thank you! I'm working on a power conversion for all systems to use 12v ham shack power rather than relying on utility power. Both systems may be up and down over the next few days as I work on that project. Please bear with me as I work through the changes.
    Original Description: How to download and setup the SDR# software then connect to my SDR systems and others around the world.

    Thanks for the video. What's the Airspy's noise floor? Do Airspy have better sensitivity than RTL (the blue dongle)?

    • @Compsci282
      @Compsci282  Před 3 lety +2

      It depends on the specific Airspy device and what sampling modes you are using. If I connect a dummy load to the SDR to eliminate signals, the floor I see is often over -120dBFS. Yes, the Airspy devices have better sensitivity than the RTL based devices. But, the Airspy devices also cost quite a bit more. Everything is a trade off! ;-)

    I like this! Can you tell me how to choose the Airspy hardware so I can set one up for myself? Also, is their loop antenna a good choice to use indoors for someone who doesn't have any yard space?

    • @Compsci282
      @Compsci282  Před 3 lety

      The best way to choose a particular device is to start off by selecting a frequency range you would like to monitor. The Airspy HF+ and Discovery devices are particularly suited for lower frequency (aka HF) reception. About 30MHz and lower. AM radio would be received by these devices. he HF+ does have a 2nd port that can receive higher frequencies, but the device is best suited for HF.
      The R2 and Mini start at 24MHz and go up from there. FM radio would be received by these devices.
      There is another device called the SpyVerter that allows the R2 and Mini to receive signals lower than 24MHz, but you need to have another device and the cost goes up.
      Yes, a loop antenna is one of the better choices for an indoor antenna. You will have to re-tune the loop when you change frequency of interest, but if its indoor, this should be pretty easy to do.

    Please how can i get the network bandwidth as low as you have it? arround 60kB/s, i have it at arround 600kB/s

    • @Compsci282
      @Compsci282  Před 3 lety

      Hi technic masters,
      When I connect to the SDR, I see that it is consuming about 130kB/s of bandwidth. Some of the settings on the SpyServer configuration affect the bandwidth used. Here are some of the settings I have that may help bring the bandwidth down:
      force_8bit = 1
      fft_fps = 30
      fft_bin_bits = 16
      While some of my settings are higher than the defaults, this would add more bandwidth rather than reduce it. Its always a trade off between bandwidth and performance of the UI.
      In the spyserver.conf file provided out of the box by Airspy, they do a pretty good job at leaving comments for you to follow and they let you know what each of the parameters do (and how they would affect bandwidth consumption).
      My config file is relatively standard other than the settings I mentioned above.
      I hope this helps you with both of your questions.

    • @Compsci282
      @Compsci282  Před 3 lety

      I'll also add that if you are using radio modes in SDR Sharp that are like WFM, you bandwidth consumption will also go up noticeably. You can use the maximum_bandwidth = 15000 setting for most "narrow" modes like NFM, AM, USB, etc.
      You would not be able to listen to broadcast FM (WFM) stations like this, but it certainly would limit and lower the bandwidth consumption.

      Hi deltaPath,
      I'm using SDR# (SDRSharp) revision 1811 (2021-03-29) on my PC to connect to the server and it is working just fine. Maybe you are using an older version of software or are entering the URL incorrectly. The url for the SpyServer Network should be sdr://sdr.kd0bqs.com:5555
      Maybe one of these two suggestions will help you out.
