- Scythes are useful tools for clearing land and harvesting various grains and grasses. This is an overview of various blade types you can get for your scythe, as well as a look at different types of handles (wood and aluminum).
The aluminum scythe in my video is a Seymour, which you can find on Amazon here: amzn.to/2boJQ13
The sharpener I feature in my video and regularly use is here: amzn.to/2b2teIG

Picked up my aluminum scythe new at my lical Ace Hardware. I did have to order it, just a couple of days tho. ❤ it.
Liked your video got my first scythe and it happens to be raining so I thought heck let’s watch a video that might help
Me out and I loved it got to se my similar scythe old school scythes and a lot of explaining how they all are good and bad great job loved it
You’re gonna love it!
As with all edged blade tools, it's a *slicing* action (not a chopping action) that's most effective. Same as a kitchen knife, you don't simply press down, but *slice* to make your cut. This is why it's important to have some *swing* to your cut, to avoid the blade hitting square on. Slow the video playback speed down to see this swinging-and-slicing action.
For some reason this looks really satisfying.
absolutely
I'm thinking about getting a scythe and was wondering if the blades are interchangeable from type/brands?
Yes, in my experience they all fit one another. I'm sure there are some that don't play well with others, but I haven't seen such a blade yet. The nice thing is changing them around. A week and grass blade are great.
This will be very useful to me. I have a hilly property that this will greatly improve things because of some dense weeds on a down slope behind the house. Getting SO tired of weed eater line breaking every 60 seconds--no more!
Have fun with it!
@@metaspencer Thank you! I just picked up two scythes today, one with the weed blade and the other with the grass blade. This will take some practice and I wish I had more level ground to learn with.
Yeah, uneven ground can mess up your stroke... enjoy it
Hello, I found the aluminum scythe but where do I find the blade for it. I’m looking for the weed one can you please post a link to buy it thanks
Amazon has them ... search Seymour scythe blade
Very nice
thanks
Hello. A little tip is to swing the scythe
I saw in the video that you are pulling
I'll try that
I'm working on it! old habits die hard :)
Hi, great video. What brand and model is your aluminum scythe?
It looks more stout than the seymours i see for sale (even if it is one) and wan one like it.
Mine is a Seymour. I got it on Amazon for about $60: amzn.to/2dN5cWw The weed blade I have on it is another 50 or 60 bucks: amzn.to/2dnsG3P
Thank you!
metaspencer what size do you recommend for weeds?
Why are american scythes bent so much?
Maybe because we all have crooked backs? :)
@@metaspencer Somehow the further you go west the more bent the sccyhtes become...
@@user-un5xj1wl6p haha ... so true!
damn
you dont peen the blade?
I carry a stone at all times
using a stone to sharpen the blade is not peening it, you put the blade on a anvil and hit it to case harden and draw it out more to get a nice thin edge. you will get the blade way sharper when you peen it.
Awesome ... I often dream of anvils
You peen the european blades, not american blades
It has to do with how they are made
Is it a bush hog or a brush hog? You need to learn the proper way to use the scythe. Stop chopping with it and swing it with a slicing action. Good luck with the scythe.
Thanks man! I’ve learned to swing for grass but still chop at tough weeds. Gets the job done
