  • Filtering Maple Syrup when it is finished boiling has always been a big issue for us...it is time consuming, messy, and we lose precious syrup during the filtering process....Not any more! My wife discovered that others are using a vacuum filtering system and our family put our heads together to try and figure out how to make one so that we could save the $600-$10,000 that commercial units sell for. Watch as we try to make our own vacuum filter system out of parts that we have around the homestead and see if we can finally get our filtering process figured out!

Next time, try turning the smaller top pan upside down. That rounded factory edge is probably going to seal better than the cut edge.

This is the first year I used a vacuum filter and what I noticed the filtering process works better and the filters clean up better as well when we used DE powder ,also known as filter aid
    Great video

I built one very similar this year. I cut out a larger circle in the lid instead of having the small holes to help pull more sap through. That helped a lot. I am increasing taps next year so I’ll be getting a filter press (likely with a manual diaphragm pump) but this got me through this season! Still way better than gravity filtering through cones

Thank you for the input! I am going to cut the center out for a finish boil tomorrow.

We usually end up making a spread that you can put on toast or bagels out of the sugar that collects in the bottom of the jars. Tasty. It's like a sugar glaze.
    Good video👍

A piece of tubing split open lengthwise makes a great gasket around the top of your pot. That’s what I use (with a bunch of little spring clamps) on my still. Thanks for the idea!

You could use two turn buckle fasteners with the ends being hooks to hold the pots together.

I tried building one a few years ago and initially thought it was great but no amount of vacuum will pull the syrup through once the filter is plugged, and trying to change filters became a real mess. I went back to just pouring a small amount through then changing the filter, still a sticky mess but I don't have to deal with clamps which is also time consuming. Been using Gerber cloth diapers, New ones😂 just rinse and hang them up to dry,2 layers.

What temperature was the syrup after you filtered it? Did you have to re-heat it to bottle it---or was it at least 180 degrees to go directly to bottling?

So what do you do with the syrup after you take it out of the filter pot. Do you have to reheat it and then bottle it. Thanks so much great video.

If you add some DE to your syrup it will do even better at filtering.

So on my filters, I have a soft side and a coarse side if you will on the thick filter. What side goes up or does it not matter?
