  • Exploring the capital of the largest island in Greece, Crete. Heraklion was originally the name of the port of Knossos the ancient capital of the island. Known as Kastro in middle-ages and later as Chandax from which derives the Italian-Venetian name Candia, during the Venetian domination after the liberation from the Ottomans took back its ancient name Heraklion.
The walls of Heraklion was the greatest investment ever made by the Venetian Republic, as Crete was the only of their colonies considered a Kingdom.
