  • What not to bring backpacking. A video on my first backpacking trip and some of the terrible gear choices I brought with me. Some good ideas of what gear to leave at home and my worst backpacking gear. Just a fun talk about some of the pros and cons of traditional vs. ultralight backpacking gear, to help some avoid a disaster. Enjoy!

Dude... this video is so chill; no wonky ass music, No horribly long life story. No nonsense holes, & filled with great info.

Whatever gets your foot in the door - couldn't agree more. Cheap gear gets you started and makes you appreciate the good stuff later.

I actually intentionally bring several huge water bottles with me, to give away or give to hiking buddies as the journey proceeds. It is fantastic exercise, like doing squats. I grew up as a Marine and our pack then weighed about 65lbs (more for mortarmen), so nothing feels heavy to me.

A decision we all have to consider is to either be comfortable in camp (NOT ultra-light), or comfortable on the trail (ultra-light). That’s something I learned from a book by Andrew Skurka called “The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide”, which I recommend for anyone getting started. I fall more in the “comfortable in camp” group, but I’m also carrying around close to 8 pounds of photography gear. And, my Helinox Chair Zero... for the one pound that adds, it’s a wonderful luxury.

Even though I'm an "ultra heavy" backpacker who routinely carries a 50+ lb pack I still really enjoyed this video. We all hike our own hike and adjust our systems so they work for us. So true that packpacking is an evolutionary process. Thanks for sharing.

That feeling you were talking about is called freedom.

I went backpacking for the first time in the late 80s with a church youth group. Most of the boys had at least been camping, but the girls not so much. I'll never forget one of them brought water in a glass mason jar. LOL.

Planning my first back packing trip as a middle aged mom. I'm excited to get started......and a little nervous, but I know I will love it. Just did a five mile hike on the AT and now I have hiking plans for the next 10 years. Thanks for the video.

Every hiker starts somewhere but it’s a good idea to learn from experienced people. Don’t get too excited about extremes though. Ultralight and heavyweight systems don’t work for most people.

I've watched a bunch of backpacking videos and so far this is one of the most honest and straightforward vids I've seen for a beginner to learn from. Thanks!

Totally agree man. I feel that all the wrong gear and miserable trips made the right gear and enjoyable trips that much better cause you learned and evolved so you have an appreciation for your gear and how far you’ve came.

The aluminium water bottles made me smile - went on the first overnighter with my eldest daughter packs stuffed to the gills including 2 one litre aluminium water bottles each. About a mile in she's says her pack is heavy so we tip all of the water from her bottles on the road and from then on we are sharing my water! Lesson learned was don't also carry tins of beans - take dry food and rehydrate it at the camp when you get there.

Reminds me of Scouts, 12-14 years old. External frame packs, Coleman naptha stove, full aluminium pots n pans, hatchet, huge sleeping bag, tarps, and the food! Nothing freeze dried

Too funny....I have both those packs. I actually bought the Red Cloud years ago for my first 3 month surf trip to Costa Rica. Later I realized you really only need a very small school size backpack. I went through a lot of the same stuff.. I had to weigh my redcloud at the airport for a trip to Utah. 42 lb without water! Fun to see someone else's similar experience. Nowadays I use a 36 L. GG Kumo. Base weight around 9 lb. So much more comfortable. Great video man.

Good video. I once fell into the same situation, despite being an old soldier. I just thought that not having to carry weapons, ammo or rations for an extended patrol meant that I could carry extra comfort things that I'd wished I could carry during my soldiering days. How wrong I was. Many old soldiers say that if you "travel light you freeze at night" but there are lighter ways of avoiding hypothermia! Keep up the good work.
