WEASEL RIDES WOODPECKER

  • Weasel Flying on a Woodpecker. In what must have been a surreal moment, Martin Le-May witnessed a weasel flying on the back of a woodpecker. Although an event like this is almost unheard of it can kind of be explained considering the relationship both animals share in the wild. I’ll leave it to you to guess why or how the weasel ended up on the woodpecker’s back.

From my many experiences with weasels I know this is totally possible. This animal looks like a stoat which is also known as an ermine when it turns white in the winter. They are in the mustelid family which includes badgers, wolverines, martens, mink, fishers and others. Ermine and mink have actually found a way to get in my basement and the ermine has come upstairs often. They only come inside in the late fall to sometime in the winter. Actually I haven't seen a mink inside for several years. I saw the ermine today for a few seconds. It found nothing to kill and left.

"Pro Tip: Never let them near your chicken stash" I always remembered those words, no matter what the situation was, those words seemed to help me get through the obstacles of life, whether it was just another day battling depression, fighting the organization set to keep me in delusion, or tomahawking a weasel who took one step to close to my chickens, they did the job. What it was about them that made them special to me is something I never grasped, but when it comes down to it, I think they just comforted me, they made my head clear, they let me see the light in those moments of oblivion, and they have saved my life countless times. Those words are my friends.

As a fox, hawk, eagle only take what they need, i tend to shoot over their heads. They never come back, smart little devils! Racoon - Dead! I have seen a nightmare scenario like the one pictured with a group of hens i had raised for about 2 years. I fought the racoons every day - patching anywhere they got into my coop. Finally they ripped a roof board off - came down in and killed every chicken - one bite out of each! It was hard to see. So now - no mercy for racoons in my yard!

My neighbors kept chickens on their property (as pets, not for food or profit, these people were pretty well-off) and refused to sell the surplus of the clucking and cock-a-doodle-doo-ing little bastards, even though it was against the local codes to have their number of chickens on their property and they were making a hell of a racket every damn morning and all day. After several complaints from myself and other neighbors, and these neighbors just hiding the additional animals every time an official came calling, I 'accidentally' caught a couple of stoats (larger type of weasel) and let them loose near the chicken pen one night (yet on my property so I couldn't be charged with wrong-doing). Not. A. Single. One. Survived.
My neighbors didn't keep too many chickens after that. >:)

Most people do not know it: but woodpeckers are actually known for their high lift wing potential. They say it is the result of evolution as woodpeckers have for many eons carried loads of acorns held in fig leaf bags upon their backs to the nesting sites.
We were having a party last April on the back-yard deck, and a woodpecker landed on the deck railing and from its back dropped a pit bull. We put an ad in the paper and found the owner of the dog, and it turns out he lived twenty-three miles away.
    Amazing birds!

Amazing photo of the green woodpecker carrying the weasel. Reminds me of the old joke about the male mouse making love to the female elephant. Just as the mouse is really going for it, the elephant stands on a thorn and let's out a yelp. "Oh. sorry", says the mouse. "Am I hurting you".

  • @SunnieDIY

My friend wild weasel lives in the house. She's a short tailed weasel. She had countless opportunities to kill my rabbits but didnt. Likely because she's super small (that weasel in your video with the rabbit was much bigger. A normal sized weasel lol). Also because my rabbits are in a group and rabbits aren't push overs lol. A single rabbit in a cage or in the wild is likely an easier target than 8 in a space that can watch each other's backs.
I've seen how my rabbits are inside now to my rat. She wants to make friends and escapes her cage to play with Amber the rabbit that has a cage on top of hers and Amber attacks her (she's so quick she gets away but still she's ready for a fight). Felicity my rat is as big around as that little weasel. The weasel is just stretched out lol. Felicity isn't a full grown female rat so let that give an idea of size. The weasel is full grown though.
So anyway my friend has slept near my rabbits pen when they were outside for days at a time we would find her there. If she was starved I'm sure she would risk it but this year has been terrible with voles. An explosion of population. Last year they ate the cords in my birth mom's house she lives across the street. Her electricity is messed up now they got in her walls.
This year they moved into ours and our shed. She went from the shed to the house and since she moved in no sign of a vole. She's either killed them all or others have moved on after seeing the destruction.
She's perfect in every way. You need to understand that my bf wanted to use sticky traps but those are vile and it takes a long time to kill them terrified (I don't want the voles costing us thousands but I won't torture something with a slow death). We got the mouse traps that slam which mostly worked and instantly however never leave them on your oven top. It doesn't get super hot but hot enough to screw up the plastic. I thought the trap still worked but the vole it got it half got and the poor thing was walking around in circles all dotty for who knows how long until so put it out of its misery. Our weasel friend was an answer to my prayers because she's natural, and unlike a cat since she's super tiny she can get to them where they live. She leaves my babies alone (rabbits, dogs, pet rats, and pet snake and no I don't breed my rats as snake food my ball python eats prekilled mice). My rabbits inside are in pairs she leaves them alone she can't get in my rat cage or the snake cage and my dogs are massive so she avoids them. In fact when they start sniffing her out and bugging her she calls for help lol. She does her squeak noise she's realized I come to her rescue and shoe them off.
She's not a pet she's completely wild. She doesn't kill more than she needs. Skunks will and they will behead the animals and eat the guts. Well some, some prefer the eggs.. Our skunk (not friend) decapitated our quail and got stuck in their pen not sure how to get out.
Weasels are amazing I am glad that she seems to see me as an ally and leaves my pets alone. She can have all the voles she wants as long as she stays off my pets. There were so many and I was going to get more of those horrible trap. This feels way better. Im sure she finds them much easier than rabbits over ten times her size lol. She doesn't over kill. Since no sign of voles I've given her liver and dog food meat etc. I don't mind if she stays or moves on when the weather gets better but she's been no harm to us. Even when we had chickens she didn't touch them.
