Diana laid flowers and a military headdress called a cap. This cap belonged to Diana's grandfather - he is a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, and Diana, thus, paid tribute to him and other veterans.

It is an old song, very popular in Russia. Created in 1934, it was first meant to describe the battles of the Red Army against the White Army during the Civil War in Russia (1918-1923). But since 1941, when nazi Germany invaded Russia, this song was of course applied to the battles of the Red Army during WW2 (Great Patriotic War). This song was a part of standard repertoire of Russian military choirs which sang it always with much power (and in a more long version). In those years this song became known also in USA. Even today the military ensembles and separate singers often interpret this song, usually with much energy and bravura. They always interpret this song as a military march. For example, you can see a modern English version of this song by German, Russian-born pop star Helena Fischer, performed in Germany: it is in total contrast with Diana's performance! czcams.com/video/pI6HuawBX5o/video.html . What Diana did with this song is absolutely unprecedented. She abridged the text and made it a kind of a solitary meditation. A brooding Requiem dedicated to fallen soldiers.
It's an old song. Diana gave her 2 lives. The music was written in 1933 by composer Lev Knipper, the author of the words is the poet Viktor Gusev. The melody of the song became the main theme of the first movement (Andante maestoso. Originally this song was about the Red Army fighting the White Army and their allies of *14 (yes, fourteen) invading countries* during 1918-1921. Those 14 invading countries included Britain, France, and the USA, all super-powers at the time. The Red Army kicked them all out. They tell you that "Bolsheviks were evil and tyrannical" but ask yourself how could the Red Army of the Bolsheviks win against not only the Tsarist Generals of the White Army who all had superior training in military strategy and tactics, but also against the most powerful militaries of the world, _all at the same time?_ People do not fight that way to save some tyrants. People only fight that way to save themselves. The Bolsheviks were the people, the Red Army were the people. They fought for their country, they fought for Communism, and they won.
Then, not twenty years later the Red Army fought the "most powerful military" on the planet, again, and in 1945 the Red Army, the people won again.
