So much of what you say about Magic cards also applies to other collectables such as comics and coins, etc. Any future 'collector', of any type of collectible, would do well to watch this video.
In any market that's dealing with positional goods with little intrinsic value really would do well to follow such advice.
The reason the coins I collect are scarce very early American coins + bulk precious metals/bullion coins sold @ near spot.
Yup, this stuff is comic books 101, or at least it used to be, I have no idea what the fuck is going on now; last I checked it was like being back in the 90's, an endless stream of super duper limited edition variant covers and rampant speculation
@@i.korezom doesn't sound like a good time.
This is one of the most interesting videos I have seen in a while. Thanks! As a new player who is starting to understand the flow of the sales and resales this is mindblowing. I dont even undertand how people try to sell without knowing the numbers or the real value of things, no matter if we're talking about land, cars, houses or cards. Great content here.
i know your comment is a year old but i'd still like to comment''
most people have emotional value to those objects, and don't think about how rare or expensive those objects in reality are.
someone could have owned a car that was cheap yet made in limited quantity for example.
in their minds they bought it pretty cheap, had yeaaaars of fun/use out of it, and now that its getting to old to be of real convenience/use they sell it.
they don't look at the car as an antique that could be worth alot because it stood the test of time and there aren't alot of them
they just see it as an outdated thing from their past that has outlived its use, this is called emotional bias.
in that same vein i've bought a playset of the MTG card Academy Rector (Reserved list) for 10 bucks total at a flea market, because the dude that sold it hadn't bothered to look up the price, but decided to price the cards from memory. (he had a wasteland for 20, yet 4 academy rectors for 2.50 a piece)
but ofcourse prices change overtime, he didn't realise the actual value of what he sold me due to his emotional bias.
Just found your channel this week, these long running informative videos are great.
"Large hard phyrexian tower" lol. Going to use that now.

Not even seen much Rudy but this seems like one of his best. Much love and appreciation for this, really seems like a good summation of you and your business ♡
This is my first time commenting on a video and I just wanted to say this was one of the most helpful ones I've seen and would love more content like it, so thank you! Many friends or peers at the LGS often talk about collection values, investing, flipping inventories, etc. and this video does a great job of outlining how to better think about the real return on card values. I've been collecting forever, mostly out of love for the game, but when I turned to serious collecting out of value, a walkthrough like this one would have been super helpful. Thats all, thanks!

I really like watching the longer videos where you go into a topic and take the time to unpack it.
I have been watching Rudy for about 4 years now and this is the most useful video I have watched yet. Thanks!
3 Little Timmy's and the big bad Rudy.
I love this story. Great moral.
I'm still watching
This is a video I think everyone should watch, regardless of which collectible game they play. This stuff is exactly what I deal with when buying Heroclix figures to flip on Amazon. Thankfully, Heroclix players are really relaxed and willing to meet you halfway. The big thing people don't think about is that suddenly bringing your whole collection to a LGS when you really need money is like cashing your textbooks in at the end of a semester. Everyone is trying to do it and the store only has so much money to allocate for the inventory. They likely don't want 10,000 of the same bulk common card. There's usually someone who will take a lower offer.
There is a huge trade-off between value and convenience, especially in collectible games. I once traded 4 copies of Marionette Master to a guy when it spiked. He said he probably had the cards in his collection, but he didn't feel like combing through his bulk rares to find them. Well, years go by and the cards or figures pile up in people's closets. The people who keep their collection well-managed won't be in the $10,000 Timmy situation, because they routinely trade cards off to buylists when they go up in value. They probably take store credit to get the cards they want, without investing extra cash. They might even use store credit to pay for the entry fees for all of the events they play at their LGS.
5 or 6 years of set rotations can decimate a gaming budget. I play Magic and Heroclix in a few cities. The people I deal with are usually pretty chill, but they rarely trade face to face and few bother with buylists. They also want to get as much money as they can, when the time comes to sell their collection. Magic is far more fair to it's players with getting your money back, especially because different cards keep spiking every week or two throughout the year. You could play for 20 years on the same $500. I doubt it's the same with other card games. I know that with Heroclix, most big stores offer next to nothing for bulk. It's not even worth it to ship the figures, because of size and weight. I still have at least 10 players waiting to sell to me face to face, once I free up enough space to take more figures.
Players of these different collectible games often get frustrated and list the whole lot on ebay in an auction with a fuzzy picture. Those are the best deals for stocking up. It's like that TV show Storage Wars. Most of the auctions are Lil Timmy lots, but the College Timmy lots are real game-changers. I'm still selling Heroclix figures I got from this auction I sniped 4 years ago. I might have paid 10% market value. Most players would get a lot more for their money, if they became pro-active traders.
My advice is to watch a ton of auctions and snipe a good one here and there. Trade/sell to buylists when your cards spike. It might take a few hours a week to keep up with prices, in the beginning. Eventually, it will become second nature. At least, you'll be better at appraising your collection's value for when you eventually decide to sell it.
@@jesseselders2942Very thoughtfully written. You sure know your stuff I think.
@@jesseselders2942 well written. I've been with the game for the better part of 25 years and I've seen all the Timmy's of the rainbow. These videos are very informative and helps shed a light on what people really have when evaluating their collections.

I was a college Timmy... Recently had to sell out of my collection because... life. Spent about 25,000USD on it and was able to sell it for 12,000USD. Happy I sold out to be honest. Still play magic daily. Don't ever see myself accruing such a big collection again.

Honestly. Ive seen so many gay couples playing magic now. I do think they had second dates already. To be honest i feel like 90% of all couples ive ever seen playing magic were gay even when i exclude my friends. Which brings me to an total of 4 couples ive seen playing magic.

So true
Biggest takeaway for me is I should’ve started collecting 15 years ago
Halfway through Magic Business School, watching each second of these long videos. I'm kinda stuck in College Timmy, but this quarantine Reserved List price spike has put some of my EDH collection into the clouds. Great content

I'm on the cusp of Lil to College Timmy myself. I rarely sell back to stores, because I used to work in retail and know that I'm never going to get full value back. So, I only sell to the new or Lil Timmy's. Let them sell back to the store if needed.

And both you and the Lil Timmys come out ahead by doing so....
Whoever can deliver this sort of insane dialogue without cracking up and still teach very important lessons in collection financing is no man or beast, but rather an eldritch being beyond our comprehension.
10/10 very educational
I absolutely love all of these videos. I wish I had found your channel earlier and had the opportunity to be a patron! Love all the content and everything you're doing. I was the president of the 'stock market club' at my college and interned at a firm before moving into insurance and I love the financial mindset. Great stuff.
Me using my big brain: I’ll keep every card because they are worth more than money. Money is only good for buying worthless mtg cards.
I only use MtG cards to buy worthless money.
Came for Timmy advice, left with lessons on the hardships of life.
I watch your long videos Rudy, I find it insightful. Keep it up.
Excellent learning experience for me. I have recently started collecting but treating all my fares with care, sleeves and dark area in a ultra pro binder. Every single one.
A guy told me once when I was a kid that most people aren’t out to screw you over they’re just looking out for their own best interest. I feel like that applies to this video pretty well. Keep your tacos floppy Rudy!!!
I heard the same thing in a other way "Most people aren't asshole, but everyone looks for themselves, what good for them may be bad for you"
I think it's like how people get so into television shows that they start to identify themselves with the show so to speak so when something happens they don't like they feel their own character and investment of sorts has been attacked. It's those subtle little ways we fool ourselves into thinking things matter more than they do. Its easy to conflate self worth with what your dollar amount in cards is if this game is your main hobby and part of your identity I think. That's where all the emotions come in when the reality train hits them.
Even if you are looking to make a dime, still doesnt make you a better person, or even good at that.
I wish this was required viewing for anyone trying to sell a collection. You rock man. Love the vids.
Edit: I also buy and sell comic books and this exact same issue comes up with that as well, often. I think this is a general collector mentality. Thanks again for putting in a video.
Very very enlightening...Thanks for the lesson. Much enjoyed

Large hard phyrexian tower..
Am watching these series back to back now. They’re very interesting, appreciate them man! 👍🏻
Love the long videos man! It helps me a lot!
You know, back in my FNM days, there were guys who always wanted to trade lots of their small-dollar cards for a fetchland or something big. They'd have trade binders inexplicably full of playable-but-unexciting 1-5 dollar cards, nothing big you could 1-for-1 with the card of yours they want.
People would pull out like a dozen cards from these guys' binders, check SCG prices, and agree to pick up a fistful of three dollar rares their fetchland or Jace or whatever. It always seemed like these kids were getting screwed out of their best cards, but since the trades "made sense" according to price lookup tools, we all went with it.
Now I see what these guys were doing.
fetchland is still bulk lil timmy
Large, hard phyrexian tower. The algorithm recommended. Did not disappoint.

Learning so much from you Rudy. It’s all about tempering your expectations. Yes, I watch these all to the end.
It’s been 3 years since this video came out but it’s still one of the most important on your channel
I didn’t even know you had these economic videos, thank you for these!
"these $2k cards are pack fresh, I just pulled them."
That's why Capt. Timmy is still a Timmy. He opened boosters that potentially contain $2k cards.
Unopened they'll never be worth 2k though, so Capt. Timmy took a gamble and "won", then he played with it and bent the card...
@@nelson5292 but nobody mentioned how much capt. timmy spent before he pulled the 2k card so who knows how much he had to open to find it. Probably more than 2k worth of straight profit if he kept the product sealed
I watched the whole thing, and I don't even play magic.
Very informative and educational for Timmy 3 and people that haven't done their homework
Super valuable insights. Thanks, Boss
"Large Hard Phyrexian Tower"
Love the longer format videos Rudy, learning a lot.
I've been watching your videos for as long as I can remember. Thank you for this video in particular. It's about time the community is informed about how the market works when it comes to MTG.
Large hard phyrexian tower lol.
I am enjoying the information! I will be sharing this video with some of my friends. Thanks!
Large, Hard Phyrexian tower. Hell yeah Im watching the long vids man, this is where the golds at! The KNOWLEDGE!!!
4th level Timmy here. Time to start climbing the ladder
Sealed product is probably the target. You'll dodge a lot of the problems that the video mentioned.
1. Product is protected and by definition near mint
2. They HAVE to take your bulk because its bundled into the product
3. Much easier to itemize than singles if you need to make an insurance claim for some reason
The main drawback is that sealed product takes up a decent amount of space and is a bit harder to liquidated
There's no way sealed product takes up more space than loose bulk when you consider what you need to store loose bulk. A 500ct bulk storage box from BCW is 4.25" x 9.875" x 3.25" for a volume of 136.4"^3 while a booster box is 5" x 8" x 3" for a volume of only 120"^3
Now yeah, you can use a bigger bulk storage. A 5000ct box for example is 15.625" x 19" x 4" for a volume of 1187.5"^3 or 118.75"^3 per 500 cards. But, ten booster boxes is still only 25" x 16" x 3" if you're making a section 2-wide, 5-back, 1-high for a volume of 1200"^3
Keeping in mind, in a booster box, we have 540 cards, that's 5400 cards still in similar volume to a 5000ct bulk box. The value of 10 booster boxes is also way higher than a 5000ct box of bulk, even though it consists of whatever % of bulk.
@@ino_mation yes sealed product takes up less space then bulk, though sealed product will take more space then level 2 or level 3 cards
(Bulk isn't really a solid way to cash out)
I thought I was watching a video on the economics of Magic, until I realized I’m watching my new favorite life coach.
I just watched this new to your channel but love this breakdown as I just got back into magic and I am thinking of investing in sealed product and singles.
Watching this video almost 3 years from its release and I wish I had seem it before. Thanks, Rudy.
The formal economic term is frictional costs, and is a well studied idea that unfortunately that not everyone gets.
That feeling when you're enjoying a floppy taco with one hand and you've got your large, hard Phyrexian Tower in the other and Rudy calls you out on it
I remember when you did this video like 2017-2018 when I was in the US for some training.
I am actually a Pokemon collector and I used to buy low-tier cards thinking they would value, which they did, yet not as much as the other, reachable at that time, high-tier cards in Pokemon.
I am applying your analysis to my purchases since then in Pokemon.
Thank you, sir, I can see how honest and sincere you are, and how you can relate to how life can be not easy for some people.
I hope you stay well and healthy Rudy :)
Salam from Egypt :)
One of your best videos Rudy! Rudy is out here making a change LHPT 👍🏻
Great vid. I'm in the process of pricing my collection and this really helps me understand what it's actually worth.
What is funny is that I remember thinking about 'collection value' when I was starting to play more seriously and just realized I'd never get my money back out of it, so I better enjoy the game for just the gameplay aspect of it. I never got a 'serious' collection, I just got what I could and made decks from it. When I slowed my playing, I wasn't interested in selling my collection because I'd rather have the ability to play my old decks occasionally rather than get a meager amount of cash I could get from my collection.
Now my 'meager collection' looks like a gold mine, a dozen dual lands, a couple cradles, sure my oath of druids went to garbage but my 6 force of wills skyrocketed. I am still not interested in selling, $10,000 still seems like a pitiful amount to exchange for my very personal and hard won semi-valuable collection.
The bottomline is that i found far more value in my collection than the dollar amount. Everytime i drop mind over matter and a high tide, play a wish from judgement, make someone fold first turn with a balance, play necro braids, or play my block constructed domain deck and legacy weapon their land away I love seeing their face. It just can't put a dollar amount on evoking that blast of memories of when I was super into magic.
I do watch till end bro thanks for sharing your perspective
I just want to say thank you.
this is the video I needed to watch right now.
I am trying to figure a lot of things out right now (I'm taking a management 101 class if that tells you anything).
and if you see the comment I hope you are having a great day.
These are my favorite videos, give me the deep dirty dive into how these things work. People can only get better with more info, and MTG finance is a great way to make extra money on the side.
