- How To Aerate & Oxygenate Your Pond
In this video I discuss the different ways to aerate and oxygenate your pond. We look at air pumps, waterfalls, fountains and oxygenating plants!
Ponds need oxygenation in warmer parts of the year because oxygen will deplete from the water in warmer temperatures. Don't just rely on oxygenator plants, add any type of aerating pump or waterfall to maximize oxygen in your pond!

Thank you for the video. Just came across it when I was searching for a new pump. It is disturbing how some people question whether they really need filter or really need oxygenator. Come on guys imagine living in a home where it is always hot or always cold and not living very comfortably. That is how it would be for your little fishy friends.
Thank You, for a much simplified explanation of aeration-oxygenation
Enjoy your ponds!
Trickle filters helps a lot with no added electricity. And no noise close to the pond. And water stays calm to perfectly see kois. I have that.
I’m # 1! Thank you for sharing this informative and entertaining video.
I enjoyed watching!
Thanks for watching it!
Great clear video and commentary. First class, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for awareness 👌👌👌
Thanks
Thank you
excellent tutorial
Very helpful!! I just wanted to see it in action, dope pond mate!!
Great. Info
..thanks👍
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for sharing this!
Thanks for sharing...🥰🥰🥰
Thanks for watching
What plants would u recommend for a pond 6ftx6ft ideally planted as don't want the one that will grow like mad in the pond
Thanks to thes
Good video!
is there any different if I put the airstone in the bottom or middle of the pond?
Hi just asking, do my koi still need air pump? I already put a submersible water pump
Great job , how about plants at night.... , not a reason not to plant though, as all the other benafits are so important as you point out .
Great video new subscriber Barry Manchester England 👍 👍 👍 👍
Thanks Barry
Hi is the earator good for both catfish and tilapia pound?
Can air stones be used on large ponds?
Thank you for sharing. I really thought cooler weather creates higher dissolved oxygen in the water.
Cooler water can hold more gasses.
well xplained vid, i would like to ask, we have a small koi pond 8ft long x 5ft wide 4ft deep, iwould like to turn my pond pump off at night because of noisy water and have a air pump for night time and xtra oxygen when needed, what size air pump would i need, thanx
Hello, im getting a 580 litre pool to put fresh water fish in it, how much gph (gallons per hour) should my pump have?
What’s the song at the start?
Where can I get the pump used?
Loving the banggai cardinalfish tattoo man!
Do you know what breed that pale pink (yellowish face) fish is? There’s a couple small versions of them in my pond and I have no idea what breed they are!
is it possible to have too much aeration? My stone ball and air pump combination seem to create a lot of movement of water and i'm concerned it may stress the fish?
Not really
How long do we run the waterfall method in a medium size well
24/7
Thank you for this video. I have a question your fish I noticed they are orange and white are they fan tails or just gold fish.
The reason is i noticed my fish are turning white like in your video.
Thanks Debbie
Im pretty sure they are long tailed comets
So many are closing ponds due to cost of electric. Now ned to start using solar but powerful enough to provide enough. So any ideas.....
Best offer aerator in amazon
Is aeration AND oxygenation both essential for a pond with fish in it? Or would you get by with plants alone? I live in Glasgow so our summers aren't really that hot. Great video by the way. Straight to the point, like it.
You need both. I have a small pond and I buy a pump that can do both but you can also buy it separately. For me I feel the aerator keeps water moving so the water is not stagnant on top (breeding ground for mosquito larvae) and oxygenator is oxygen in the water. 2 are actually completely different
And pond plants is a must.
@@vly9497 Hi. Thanks for the responses. So what has happened since I first posted the question is that I've had an outdoor power source installed and have purchaed a pond pump/filter with a fountain attachment to aerate the water. It took a few weeks to get it together and was about to deploy last weekend. Then I noticed some tadpoles in my pond. I didn't want the little guys getting sucked in so I purchased one of those mesh bags that you can place a pump inside but I am still unsure if that would prevent a tadpole genocide. I am going on holiday to the States next weekend for a couple of weeks so I am going to wait till I return till deployment and buying plants. Hopefully the tadpoles will be big enough to avoid getting sucked in. I live in Scotland so the risk of mosquito larvae is lower than in warmer countries although it is still a risk. I didn't realise having a garden pond could be so complicated! Fun though! 😁
If you have aeration you have oxygen, as the surface of the water is disturbed a gas exchange occurs which oxygenates the water you can use a pump connected to sponges/sump to filter the water and also make a waterfall with it or can just get a aerator it won't filter the pond but it will oxygenate it
What are a few. Plants that i can add to my . Pond....( i have green algae).i need to oxygenate. The. Water w plants...i dont have a pump....therw are 2 gators and catfish in pond
Check my channel i have videos explaining this
Who would actually dislike this ? 🤨just one sad person.
Is there any risk of over oxygenating? I have a 2000 litre bond with a waterfall, two air stones and a bunch of oxygenating plants…
JAHBLESS
So in the case of using an air stone, how much oxygenation comes from the bubbles & how much comes from moving the water from the bottom to the surface?
Apparently it is the interaction at the surface, rather than the rising bubbles in wat water column
@@steffenfrost995 Yes, the bubbles are causing water to move to the surface & absorb oxygen from the air at the top of the pond & not so much from the air in the bubbles. People confuse aeration with oxygenation.
Does a pump have to be pushing water above the surface or can it just be creating a flow beneath the surface like a swimming pool?
If it's not disrupting the surface it won't be dragging in oxygen to the pond
@@EverydayAquarist ok so angling it up slightly so just just bubbles would be the best if I dont want a full on water feature?
Yep
Starting my own barrel pond with gold fish and solar air stones..can anyone recommend and oxygenating plants
Could help with that
Air stones are less effective than waterfalls or fountains. Not sure if you just assumed that or read wrong somewhere
Name of the plant used
Does 1inch koi need air pump?
Yes all fish need air pump ( bubbles make oxygen), filter (to clean waste), is a must for fish!
I live near a lake and one of the neighbors put this in it
Will a “stone” oxygenator in my pond help with the heavy algae growth? I live in Hawaii.. it’s always hot and I’ve noticed an increase in fish deaths of my guppy heard. I remove clumps of thick mucus-like algae almost everyday.
Probably low oxygen
@@EverydayAquarist i want to do a pond.. like a 2x3 meters.. but i don't have electricity available and i'm in the tropics.. don't want yellow fever mosquitos or algae... Is there a way to have the water moving without electricity??
Of course! When I was a novice fish owner I used solar energy! Use solar energy great if you have good amount of sun where you are. A lot of things run on solar now. You can get solar oxygenator, solar filter (although it isn't as good as electric) and solar fountain for aeration
is it really necessary to have aerator?
Yes, it’s good for the fish the water and your filter. No downsides to it, especially helpful on hot summer nights too when the oxygen in the water depletes. Leave them on 24/7
Cost which
So giving water to pond is also give air?
Yes they need air that make bubbles which help fish breathe. It’s not true fish just breathe in water, pond fish need filter to clean poop & waste in water. And waterfall or air bubbles to breathe,
Should the pond be 24/7 aerated and oxygenated?
Yes
If you have fish. Yes you need to aerate your pond. Fish will die without filter or air pump or waterfall creating movement or bubbles in pond. Fish need water movement which creates oxygen for them to survive. Fish will eventually die in a pond with just water and no aerator, waterfall or bubbles.
Look at my tattoo 😂😂😂😂😂😂
