  • How To Aerate & Oxygenate Your Pond
    In this video I discuss the different ways to aerate and oxygenate your pond. We look at air pumps, waterfalls, fountains and oxygenating plants!
    Ponds need oxygenation in warmer parts of the year because oxygen will deplete from the water in warmer temperatures. Don't just rely on oxygenator plants, add any type of aerating pump or waterfall to maximize oxygen in your pond!

    Thank you for the video. Just came across it when I was searching for a new pump. It is disturbing how some people question whether they really need filter or really need oxygenator. Come on guys imagine living in a home where it is always hot or always cold and not living very comfortably. That is how it would be for your little fishy friends.

    Trickle filters helps a lot with no added electricity. And no noise close to the pond. And water stays calm to perfectly see kois. I have that.

    Is aeration AND oxygenation both essential for a pond with fish in it? Or would you get by with plants alone? I live in Glasgow so our summers aren't really that hot. Great video by the way. Straight to the point, like it.

    • @vly9497
      @vly9497 Před 2 lety +1

      You need both. I have a small pond and I buy a pump that can do both but you can also buy it separately. For me I feel the aerator keeps water moving so the water is not stagnant on top (breeding ground for mosquito larvae) and oxygenator is oxygen in the water. 2 are actually completely different

      @@vly9497 Hi. Thanks for the responses. So what has happened since I first posted the question is that I've had an outdoor power source installed and have purchaed a pond pump/filter with a fountain attachment to aerate the water. It took a few weeks to get it together and was about to deploy last weekend. Then I noticed some tadpoles in my pond. I didn't want the little guys getting sucked in so I purchased one of those mesh bags that you can place a pump inside but I am still unsure if that would prevent a tadpole genocide. I am going on holiday to the States next weekend for a couple of weeks so I am going to wait till I return till deployment and buying plants. Hopefully the tadpoles will be big enough to avoid getting sucked in. I live in Scotland so the risk of mosquito larvae is lower than in warmer countries although it is still a risk. I didn't realise having a garden pond could be so complicated! Fun though! 😁

      If you have aeration you have oxygen, as the surface of the water is disturbed a gas exchange occurs which oxygenates the water you can use a pump connected to sponges/sump to filter the water and also make a waterfall with it or can just get a aerator it won't filter the pond but it will oxygenate it

    So in the case of using an air stone, how much oxygenation comes from the bubbles & how much comes from moving the water from the bottom to the surface?

    • @steffenfrost995
      @steffenfrost995 Před rokem

      Apparently it is the interaction at the surface, rather than the rising bubbles in wat water column

    • @daveanderson3768
      @daveanderson3768 Před 11 měsíci

      @@steffenfrost995 Yes, the bubbles are causing water to move to the surface & absorb oxygen from the air at the top of the pond & not so much from the air in the bubbles. People confuse aeration with oxygenation.

    • @freebutterfly102
      @freebutterfly102 Před 3 lety

      Yes they need air that make bubbles which help fish breathe. It’s not true fish just breathe in water, pond fish need filter to clean poop & waste in water. And waterfall or air bubbles to breathe,

    Should the pond be 24/7 aerated and oxygenated?

  • @freebutterfly102
    @freebutterfly102 Před 3 lety

    If you have fish. Yes you need to aerate your pond. Fish will die without filter or air pump or waterfall creating movement or bubbles in pond. Fish need water movement which creates oxygen for them to survive. Fish will eventually die in a pond with just water and no aerator, waterfall or bubbles.
