Back in the day I went to South Africa and we learned the way of the braai! In fact we learned what it was to hunt, prep our meat and cook low n slow with nothing but wood, charcoal and fire.
Then one day someone said, “Let’s have a potjie” (pronounced poy-key), and the rest was history. I fell in love with cooking and have loved every moment of eating it all too!
This video is a throwback to my roots in food enthralment. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed cooking and eating it!

When I was a kid, my grandmother on a rural farm cooked the most delicious meals in these potjies, she had difrent sizes...im now in my middle ages and own 3 of my own, I love making potjie dishes!! I'm so glad that you took some true African tradition with you and that you enjoy it so much!!

Very good attempt, not bad at all.
Only advice I'd give is the following:
-coat the meat in some flour before browning. It makes it brown better and also helps thicken the sauce later
    - put less stock in in the beginning. Liquid doesn't need to cover the meat all the way. Remember that all the veggies give off liquid too.
    Cheers, thanks for the vid.

Good post, nice to see our ‘cuisine’ taking root in other cultures😉
2 Things - you need to clean and possibly re-season your pot, I know some folk say it adds flavour but that’s not a good way to start.
Then you need to dial back the liquids and allow the slow, natural, extraction of all those wonderful veggies to infuse your meal.
Look after those pots, and they’ll look after you for years to come!

"Potjie" actually means "small pot" which it is not, at least not compared to usual kitchen-pots. In Afrikaans, sometimes, the diminutive term is added to something, becomes a term of affection or endearment to something that holds some sentimental attachment. Many men in South Africa would call their wives "Bokkie" which is a diminutive word to describe a small buck, usually female, but through the use of affection, it has an endearing quality. She could be 6"4' and still be called "bokkie". Similar, but not quite, to call the largest person in a group "Tiny".

Good to see that our SA potjie made it all the way to NZ. I made a Oxtail potjie last weekend. Here in the EU they call it a Dutch oven 😂.
