Have I ever lustened to an audio book? Nope. Did I watch this entire video? Yes indeed. 🌼
Thanks Lynn! I appreciate it!
I love full cast Audiobooks!!
It is just so fun and adds so much to the story!
Joe Jameson is my favorite narrator!! He narrates one of my all-time favorite series, The Greatcoats by Sebastien De Castell.
Noted Maeve! Sebastien De Castell is an author I want to try at some point. I feel like I've heard Joe Jameson but didn't know his name at the time. I'll have to be on the look out for his audios.
You and I have had many a conversation about our love notes and burn book entries toward audiobooks, especially this week! I totally agree with everything you said! Series that I have only experienced via audiobook include Pies Before Guys and In Every Generation. The audios 100% play a role in my love of these series!!
We have indeed my friend. I love when an audio elevates a story. It gets it stuck in your mind and wanting to continue the story (especially with series)!
I definitely have some audiobook pet peeves!
-Pronouncing words wrong. Not character names because those are ultimately up to the author. Words. And not where the pronunciation is simply an accent either.
-When the narrator is monotone. I don’t want an audiobook that sounds like a lecture.
-Sound effects. When a narrator makes sound effects. Please, no.
I don't think I've ever had (or noticed) a narrator mispronouncing a word. That would bother me.
Monotone is a no go. And I agree, I don't need sound effects from the narrator. That would take me out of the story.
Hello 👋
I'm considering passing on audiobooks with the exception of memoirs. I love memoirs read by that person! 😊
I must admit the audiobook for Stella Maris is the reason i haven't completely moved on. That was a performance more than a reading 😮
I love Non-fiction books narrated by the author! Those are some of my favorites!!
It's like listening to a really long podcast ✌️😃
I agree that non-fiction books do lend themselves to being read by the author. Especially memoirs. I'm glad that you found a book that was so impactful to you! It can be hard to get over those book hangovers.
Hi Danni, I didn't know there was a full cast type of audio book. I'm showing my age again 👵 ☺ Im glad you're better from whatever illness you had, or at least you appear and sound well 🤗
There is indeed Lynn. They are a lot of fun! I do feel much better. Thank you for asking. I had a stomach bug. I was rolled up in a ball on my couch for a few days. Glad that's over!
Totally agree about graphic audio being a bit much - it's too distracting and leaves little left to the imagination. I have a similar reaction to mouth noises. That said, I've not noticed it in the Rivers of London books :) Once you hear cadence, you can't unhear it. It's happened to me a couple of times.
Other than the things mentioned, I love it when the narrator just 'gets' the book. It appears like they've actually read the book beforehand, accents and speaking mannerisms are spot on for the different characters, they understand the humour the author's going for and when they perform the book they bring it alive and add another dimension to the storytelling experience. That's why The First Law narrated by Steven Pacey is my fave.
A few suggestions based on your likes -
narrator sings the songs - The Hobbit with Andy Serkis
author reads the book - Know My Name with Chanel Miller
accents - The Stranger Times with Brendan McDonald, Gideon the Ninth with Moira Quirk, Rook and Rose with Nikki Massoud, Dungeon Crawler Carl with Jeff Hayes
full cast - Six of Crows, Daisy Jones and the Six
Ooo! Yes. I 100% agree. When a narrator 'gets it' that completely elevates the story. I also loved The First Laws narration. There were a couple of awkward scenes in that book that had me rolling on the ground laughing and I definitely attribute that to Pacey's narration. I also felt like you could feel the grit in that audio of that world. I don't know how else to describe that.
I bet The Hobbit on audio is fantastic. I will definitely have to give that a try. Know My Name is on my TBR, but I need to be in the right head space to pick that book up. The Stranger Times audio is absolutely fantastic! Gideon the Ninth is on my TBR so good to know the audios worth a shot. I didn't realize Rook and Rose had an audio. I read all of those books physically. Eee! Upon reread I will seek out the audio. Dungeon Crawler Carl is on my TBR. I didn't realize Six of Crows was a full cast. That is exciting. I need to get to that series. I'm not sure Daisy Jones and the Six is for me. I am hit or miss with music books.
Thanks for all the recs!!!
Marie and I just burst out laughing when you said, "I guess I'm not into eating ASMR person, apparently." (along with the tilt of you head and the chuckle). Thanks, that was cute and extremely funny.
One thing that I love about most (95%) of Star Wars audiobooks...is the foley sound effects that they use. I'm not sure this is the same as the second complaint in this video, but it may be. Go to audible and listen to the audio sample for a recent Star Wars novel...and see if this is something that would bother you.
I have gotten a number of people in Jade's Bedtime Bookworm Discord Book Club...to read some Star Wars books, and it took a number of them by surprise. I've read hundreds of Star Wars books, and a LOT of them have been via immersion reading (reading the eBook and the audiobook at the same time). For me, it adds to ambiance...and I love it. In fact, when a Star Wars book does NOT have it, I feel robbed. I wonder what you'd think about it. You can hear the ships passing by, the lightsabers being lit up, the pulse rifles shooting and hitting/missing. The crowd noises, especially in the Cantinas, etc. I'd like to hear your thoughts about this type of foley sound effects.
Marie and I love reading memoirs/autobiobraphies...when they are read/narrated by the author. It brings and authenticity to the story/history...that cannot be replicated, in our opinion. We've both read thirty-forty memoirs/autobiographies with the author being the narrator and it is simply amazing.
One author, that we will ALWAYS get the audiobook to read with the eBook...is Neil Gaiman. He knows his books SO well, that the narration becomes even more EXTRA. Have ever heard "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss, narrated by Neil Gaiman...it will blow your mind. Look it up on CZcams.
Kate Reading (you said it correctly), and her husband, Michael Kramer...also narrated ALL the Wheel of Time books. They are both great, and I agree with you.
Yes, a full cast narration is amazing. Thanks for the recommendation of this audiobook. Will look into it.
Thanks for this video. Appreciate you ideas/thoughts. We both love your video ideas. Thank you. Talk to you, later.
I do think that the Star Wars foley sound effects I would be okay with. However I think it is because I have seen the movies and so the sound effects help bring some of that action to mind. I also think that some of the Star Wars books are probably better produced than the one I read. There were definitely some sections of The Rose and the Thorn that I had a hard time hearing the narration because of the background noise. Not often, but it was still frustrating.
I don't think I've heard any Neil Gaiman narration. I'll have to look into that as I love him as an author.
I didn't realize Kate Reading and Michael Kramer were married. I'm currently listening to A Gathering of Shadows and they are both narrating the story.
Let me know what you think if you pick up Ruin of Kings. I really enjoyed that series.
Thanks for watching! Tell Marie I say hello.
@@Danni.Dabbles - I truly encouraage his Green Eggs and Ham on CZcams. It's simply magnificent. I love him narrating his own works, too.
@@Danni.Dabbles thank you, from marie.
Oh! I don’t like dramatized audiobooks either!!
They are just too much for me. Unfortunately I have noticed this is something that is becoming more popular. Some books only have a dramatized audio. Bummer.
@@Danni.Dabbles Ugh. I hope it doesn’t completely phase out normal audiobooks.
I like some dramatized audiobooks, but not others. When I read I picture everything in my head, so sometimes the dramatized ones help me process and 'draw the picture' faster, but other times it's just distracting. I did like the Murderbot dramatized audios a lot (the first 3 so far anyway).
I'm sure there would be some out there that aren't more than I can handle. I may have to checkout the dramatized versions of Murderbot. I've read the first 3 already, but I might try the next to see if it's more my vibe.
@@Danni.Dabbles Dramatized for sure isn't for everyone, but I did find the murderbot ones palatable compared to some other ones that i found more distracting.
I don't remember as much when I listen to an audiobook. I also do not get the opportunity to write down passages/quotes that I find meaningful.
I find that if I talk with someone about the audio as I read it, it does help me remember more details. However, overall I would say that it is very dependent on the genre for me whether I have trouble remembering things from the audio. I do miss being able to highlight or write down my favorite lines when listening to a book.
Some of my favorite audiobooks I’ve read were The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek (1&2) by Kim Richardson and, for your weird and/or non-recent release category, Hollow Kingdom (1&2) by Kira Buxton, and also in the memoir category Life’s That Way by Jim Beaver but my favorite of all has to be Peter Capaldi narrating the classic Watership Down. It transports you. I had to soft DNF the audiobook for The Sentence by Louise Erdrich because I found it grating and unlikable, but when I finally picked the book up I enjoyed it. One problem I found with the male narrator for Maplecroft was … he … spoke … so … slow … ly. It was a serious peeve. Btw, as a reader with dyslexia I listen to a LOT of audiobooks. lol I also enjoy the audiobooks for the Warrior Cats series. Guilty pleasure. lol
Oh! And How Y’all Doing? written and narrated by the late great Leslie Jordan was awesome too.
One more thing. lol You mentioned voice actors who can maintain different accents and tonal qualities to different characters. Jim Dale is amazing in this capacity. He narrated one wildly popular series from the early 2000s but he also narrated the recent, popular, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and several classics. Ok, I think I’m done now. lol
Wow! So many books and voice narrator's I've never heard of. Thank you! I've added Hollow Kingdom to my TBR. I love a fantasy horror genre blend. I've heard of Watership Down, but have never read it as I think it is going to be really emotional (animals get me). I have to agree that a narrator who is very slow or pauses all of the time drives me nuts. The Sentence I've heard mixed reviews about, perhaps it was due to the audio. It is great that you have audiobooks! Warrior Cats sounds cute! I'll keep Jim Dale in mind. I don't think I will read the Night Circus as I really didn't enjoy The Starless Sea, but I'll see what else he has narrated. Thanks for all of the recs!
That’s just like I absolutely hated the magnolia parks audio books….whoever read for the girl Mc paused literally in between every single word- it felt so weird, and I hated it!! Even bumping it up to 3x speed didn’t help lol
One of the best audios I’ve listened to though is tress of the emerald sea and ring shout! Ring shout actually sings gospel songs too!
Ooo! I've had narrators who pause more than they should. It is very irritating! Especially when it is several different narrators and only one of them does it. Grr!
I did enjoy the audio for Tress! Right Shout is on my list! I'll make sure to pick it up on audio.
Danni, Have you ever looked into misophonia? I have it and noises like you mentioned bothers me too!!!
I haven't, but I just looked it up. That definitely describes me.🤣 Interesting. I didn't know it was called something.
See I prefer the dramatization versions
I may give them another try. It is possible that it was just the version I was reading. We shall see.
