I worked for Sunglass Hut Before and after Luxottica acquired them. The quality of sunglasses back then was so much better. Most had glass lenses, sturdier frames. way better quality Brands like Rayban, Revo, Persol.

I’ve owned a few old school wayfarers and I have a pair made in 2021. My memory says old school were definitely better quality. Also the prices are crazy now! A buddy that’s a district mgr of eyeglass gave me new pair. But I don’t know/ think I’d pay $150 plus for them. Back in the day seems Wayfarers we’re around $30 a pair.

I own two pair of B&L Ray Bans, one Large Metal Aviator and one Wayfarer II, very large lens on that one. I also own Lux Ray Bans of same/similar models. I can say the build quality is far better on the B&Ls. But I have retired both of those as they were gifts from my father and I'd rather not lose/damage them more than they already are from wear.

Thanks for the review and nice comparison! I own a pair of original B&L wayfarers that I bought myself back in the '90s (I can't recall the exact year, probably '93-'94): they are still in great conditions, only the acetate frame is slightly worn off and less shiny in some areas but other than that they are still great (especially the lenses!) and I still happily wear them. I have then bought a pair of Luxottica original wayfarer classic a year ago and I must say I love them too, they fit very well on my face and the materials are still premium quality. I actually noticed - and it shows in your video too if you closely look just at the stems :) - the way the stems used to be bent in the 90' was "bolder": they were pushed more towards the outside, creating a wider gap between the frame and the temples on the face, as if the trend back then was to push the overall look to slightly more exaggerated curves. At least this is based on my own experience comparing my two pairs and noticing the same in your video. For that reason, I currently like more how the Luxottica ones fit on my face. A note about materials (like you mentioned in your videos too but to clarify the quality perception and perplexity I read in some of the comments): 2140s are the only wayfarers still made in acetate, the folding (4105) and the new wayfarers (2132) are made in nylon, while the wayfarer ease (4340) are in propionate. Nylon on the folding wayfarer was probably a required compromise to keep the weight down and maintain flexibility but I do not like the nylon material used on the new wayfarer classic at all. Propionate seems quite similar to acetate, it's slightly more flexible and 4340s are around 2grams lighter than 2140s.

Well outside of the Logos - they seem essentially on video to be the same. We of course do not have the sense of touch and feel on face, you didn't really mention any difference in these areas. I think the old ones feel sturdier than the new ones. They are still made out of acetate, but the frame feels more like plastic and they are bit creakier. My old pair fell out of the car at low speed once and they didn't suffer any damage at all. Quite impressive for some 35 year old sunglasses.

@@DavidJ2595 without a doubt they’d replace them. Theyre a perfect work around for the 54mm. I like the 5024 because they maintain the same look as the classic 5022 while being slightly oversized. I myself didn’t like the 54mm because they don’t quite capture the same look as the 5022. Its a shame Ray-Ban doesn’t make that size anymore.

Vintage ones are made from acetate wich is derived from cellulose (wood pulp). It is wise to rejuvinate them with flax seed oil from time to time. New ones I don’t know what are made from, but when you compare them side by side, they are different.
And vintage ones have wider temples.
90s B&Ls also have Ray Ban markings on right lens and on both temples, have flatter brow line and there are Wayfarer 2s with wider front/lens.
Pre 90s models are in two dimensiones, 5022 and 5024. 50 is lens size and 24 is bridge size

I've had no luck finding this out, but was wondering if anyone could tell me the approximate age of a pair of Aviators I have.
On top of the bridge B&L Ray-Ban USA is etched on. The model code is L2823 VPAS (there is no RB3025 to be found anywhere on the frame unless I'm looking wrong). The model code is not etched in the arm as they are now, but embossed on the soft part at the end of the arm that rests behind your ear.
The left (or right if wearing them) lens does have the Ray-Ban logo, but I suspect these replaced an old lens and the frames themselves are old. But maybe that's just me hoping I found something "vintage".
I would appreciate any help, not even Ray-Ban support knew what "VPAS" was but I assume they're outsourced support team isn't fully aware of these details or history. Thank you.

I have all these different Ray-Ban pairs because it became tough to find the perfect pairs for myself, and I get no compliments lol. I wish Ray Ban actually made the tortoise wayfarer like they did in the 80s because the modern day tortoise is basically always black looking in nearly all light situations sadly

Wtf they do have a tilt still. You must have looked at the "new wayfarer" model. Need the original. They still make both.

Every Ray Ban model from B&L blows Luxottica away! Especially the Ray Ban LO255 Olympians. They are some of the sleekest shades. The Luxottica 3119 Olympians look horrible in my opinion.

You need to change up your thumbnails. Looks like you got lazy. Back in the day they all looked different now they just all look the same
