I’m wondering if all the people commenting have actually taken the time to research before they commented. There have been multiple accounts from MULTIPLE countries about “comfort women” aka sex slaves. To try and pretend it didn’t happen because you think Korea is trying to get money from you is also ignoring the voices of thousands of other women from different nations who claim the same thing happened to them. It is a big deal even though it happened in the past, because the past is meant to be learned from and not repeated. To complain about a statue because it makes you “uncomfortable” well imagine the pain and suffering thousands of women and young girls went through and try to equate that to being uncomfortable because of a statue. It’s honestly terrifying to see a nation so undereducated about their own history. History is not meant to be a glory story, it is meant to be factual and brutally honest. It has been acknowledged by multiple nations that the crimes against humanity against “comfort women” are factual. It is only embarrassing to pretend it didn’t happen. It’s like America denying we had slaves. That would cause an uproar!

Apart from that, there were also rape victims during the vietnam war and their children are still around. Look up Lai Dai Han. Getting back to the initial topic, you might want to look up US Army Report 49...or the Korean scholars....Professor Park Yuha or Professor Oh. Professor Park actually wrote a book about it and then it was banned for going against the South Korean government's vision of history that it taught to its people. It's kinda sad how people don't know the atrocities these women suffered from. Like we're talking 14+ year olds having to serve 60-80+ men day in day out, away from their homes and family. Then those that weren't killed having to live a lie. And those that did have the courage to come out with their story till these day don't have an official apology from the government. I understand that it's not the fault of Japan and the Japanese people today, but as government sometimes one needs to apologize for the atrocities of the past. Germany was able to be forgiven and accepted because they did not hide their truth. One must educate those who came after ww2 so that the same horrors are not repeated. No one deserves to became a comfort women, with no body autonomy whatsoever. Tho I am relieved to see that it is atleast admitted
Hi, the Japanese have apologized for warcrimes around asia a 1000 times, unofficially and officially. Go look it up on youtube they even paid millions of millions of Dollars to South Korea back in the days, but the korean government was corrupt and stole the money. Few years ago the Japanese government sat down with Korean government and they came to an agreement. They again payed around 10 million dollars and again again apologized for the atrocities of the war and for the comfort women. I do however agree that the schools in Japan should make the warcrimes of Imperial Japan more visible and frank.

I also think it’s ironic that the Japanese people only consider themselves as victims during world war 2. Yes, they were sent to concentration camps, and it’s a pity that they did. However, did they forget the cruel crimes they committed to other countries? At least America apologized for the concentration camps, even though Japanese also received the apologies, they made plays and spread this act worldwide as if it was a fire. I'm not Korean nor Japanese, but I think that history is meant to be kept and remembered. There's a saying that one should "forgive but not forget." So it seems irresponsible and selfish for the Japanese government to want to hide the damages they have done in history and impose that the victims forget about the events. If anything, Japan also should have something in their land that acknowledges and remembers the victims and events. Here in the U.S., we don't try to hide or deny about the damages our country has done to Japan during WWII (although Japan was the one that attacked us first). Strictly speaking in the name of good ethics, the Japanese government should approach this matter with more empathy.
The US, just like canada, have a hard time aknowledging the damage caused to their colonised population (the first nations) even in 2018, so north america is not really an exemple when it come to apologies for past actions as a coloniser. Canada just formulated an official appology for the horror of the boarding school for first nations, and even then the issu is not closed.
I totally agree to most of your commentary. However, in some cases the US is as great in hiding history as Japan. If you look up on land earning in the early years and how natives were treated in your history book, you probably will only find some frontier heroes and that's it. Killing mothers daughters and even little babies, there is a picture on google of a japanese soldier killing a baby lifting up the baby with a spear. These people were beyond monsters. If japanese care so much about values, honor and respect. Why do they still worshiping two of their biggest killers of that time? These two generals made a bet for killing as many chinese as possible. In Japan after they died many governors and family members worship these two generals as second world war heroes. Unbelievable! Stranger Lands Sorry dude. Let me tell you why Japanese government visit Yasukuni-Shrine. It's because we have to remember there were so many victims in WW2 and before WW1, too. That shrine includes victims of non-Japanese, too. As a leader of Japan, as a symbol of Japan, and for the victims in wars, we have to keep praying and promissing that we would never break out wars forever with our ancestor by continuing to go there. It's one of our religion, our feeling of war, Japanese custom, our culture to think about ancestor all the time. We have to remember that Japanese and some non-Japanese fought against white-prioritized countries which were trying to just invading and exploiting from Asian. Why can't we pray for ancestor? Can you stop your country's religion? No. Anyway, there are so many hopes and thoughts and meaning in going and praying in Yasukuni. No one can blame for that. UK, US, ES, French even apologized to victims before? Please understand before blaming without knowing.
In fact, many people from their colonies were forced to participate in living and counscious human experiments. I’m a japanese woman. My old is about the same age of “comfort women”. (I’m sorry my English is so poor that it is difficult to read.) I watch this video because my history teacher teach me about this problem so many times. As you say, this is very terrible. Comfort women issues are the stupid mistakes of japan. Meanwhile, I understand why many(not all) japanese people are bitter about this. That’s because we don’t know what we should do for the future. Our government admitted and apologized about the fact officially, established Asian Women's Fund, wrote to victims (by the Prime Minister, Koizumi) and paid reparations through finally and irreversibly agreement between korea and japan in 1965 and 2015. So most japanese pepole think it was a resolved problem since finally and irreversibly agreement was concluded. In my opinion, our government need to let us learn more about comfort women issues. And each of us know and think about seriously.

I'm Korean and know about the apologies Japan's government did. There were about 15 apologies from former Japan's minister and some of them (like Kono statement) looked pretty sincere to me. Before Abe I think there were various opinions inside Korea toward Japan's apologies. Some people said Japan apologiesed so lets move for better relationships while other said said the apolgies don't include the text that, What Japan's government have done at the past, were A 'crime' and what Japan gave to Korean goverment wasn't 'reparations' but 'compensation'(reparations is the money cost for crime and compensation is money just to compensate. Kor goverment asked Japan to change it to reparations but they didn't changed it). Anyway when Abe become prime minister we heard that he started changing highscool history textbook (れきししゅうせいしゅぎ [歴史修正主義]) and deny what Japan have done during WW2. And other ministers around Abe also shares same thoughts about fomer history(like Kono daro 河野 太郞). or like Koike Yuriko(こいけゆりこ | 小池百合子 ) she stoped cherishing Chosen people who were killed by Japanese while Great Kanto earthquake (關東大地震). we can often hear about these kind of knews and these become the reason why Korean people think Apologies are not sincere. Apology should regret the past and change future behavior right? Anyway my conclusion is same like you. 저도 예전 일본인 남친에게 다른건 다 져주는데 역사 문제로는 절대 안져줬어요. 그럼 결국 싸움, 파국,.. 뭐 그런.. 우리둘이 싸운다고 한일 관계가 좋아지는 것도 아닌데, 이상하게 저 부분은 양보가 안되더라구요. 결국은 서로 다시 얘기하지 말자며 정리할 수 밖에 없어요 그런 예민한 문제를 직접 다뤄주시니 감사합니다^^

My great great grandfather was a Japanese soldier. He married with my great great grandmother who was a Malay girl. He saved her from the Japanese soldier. My mom once told me that their daughter had to hide into a large earthenware jar everytime the japanese soldiers made a spotcheck at their house.

I am Filipino. I'm mixed, so I consider myself mixed Asian. I think the reason why Japan doesn't apologize is because of "honne" and "tatemae". It's cultural. The Japanese may be genuine ashamed that they did those horrible acts, but they are also instinctively bound by their own culture, so they do not apologize directly and in the open. "Tatemae" means "the social facade one puts up in public". Japanese culture's number one enemy is shame. They are obsessively afraid of it. So, to them, "tatemae" is more important. Their culture places more value on the facade. "Honne", on the other hand, is the opposite. It's the "truth or reality". I think the Japanese of the newer generation may be genuinely ashamed, and so are the officials. Maybe. But their culture says "keeping up face is more important than the truth in order to avoid shame". I am not defending them. They should take responsibility, so that we can have peace and global stability. I don't hate them either. Hate or its cycle is just going to rape more women and children, and kill more men.

Justme beingmyself I fully understand how people are so confused with Japan and the Warcrimes committed by the imperial army of Japan. There is two factors very different about the German war and the Japanese war. The Germans where brainwashed to think that what they where doing was ok. And Hitler was a fierce leader. Korea is one of those countries which were abused by the Japanese army during the war. Stories of comfort women should be taught in school and not take it lightly so that it will never happen again. Women should be love or atleast be respected and treated as a human being.

I have to question it. If 200,000 of those women were dragged off the peninsula into sexual slavery, where were the South Korean men when it was happening? I mean, anywhere in the world, if you drag that amount of women out of the country, men are going to have something to say about it. Also, why did over 200,000 Koreans attempt to join the Japanese Imperial Army if supposedly Japan had taken 200,000 of their women? That doesn’t make sense. President’s Park’s father rose to become a distinguished officer in the Japanese Imperial Army. Why would he have served in an army that was abusing his fellow countrywomen?

Hi, the Japanese have apologized for warcrimes around asia a 1000 times, unofficially and officially. Go look it up on youtube they even paid millions of millions of Dollars to South Korea back in the days, but the korean government was corrupt and stole the money. Few years ago the Japanese government sat down with Korean government and they came to an agreement. They again payed around 10 million dollars and again again apologized for the atrocities of the war and for the comfort women. I do however agree that the schools in Japan should make the warcrimes of Imperial Japan more visible and frank, and that is probably because of" Honne" and "Tatemae".

What those comfort women want is not money, they want a sincere apology and the inclusion of the atrocities in their history like the Germans did and still do for their atrocities to people.

But I do agree that the Japanese government has indeed apologized and given money to the Koreans. I honestly have no idea what else they want. It's nit as if time could go back for history to be changed. My country was under the Japanese rule but we are not making an uproar like Korea. Instead we learn the let go and move on for our country to progress. To add on, there was a survey conducted by the Koreans and it showed that many of the people that claimed that they were raped by the Japanese were in fact prostitudes. Those claiming that they were taken away in jeeps made a mistake because Japan had no jeeps. When asked to prove their credibility, many of them could not prodice any.
They were never really heartfelt apologies tho. There are a lot of instances where the Japanese government acts as if they did nothing wrong and try to shush it.

I’m wondering if all the people commenting have actually taken the time to research before they commented. There have been multiple accounts from MULTIPLE countries about “comfort women” aka sex slaves. To try and pretend it didn’t happen because you think Korea is trying to get money from you is also ignoring the voices of thousands of other women from different nations who claim the same thing happened to them. It is a big deal even though it happened in the past, because the past is meant to be learned from and not repeated. To complain about a statue because it makes you “uncomfortable” well imagine the pain and suffering thousands of women and young girls went through and try to equate that to being uncomfortable because of a statue. It’s honestly terrifying to see a nation so undereducated about their own history. History is not meant to be a glory story, it is meant to be factual and brutally honest. It has been acknowledged by multiple nations that the crimes against humanity against “comfort women” are factual. It is only embarrassing to pretend it didn’t happen. Apart from that, there were also rape victims during the vietnam war and their children are still around. Look up Lai Dai Han. Getting back to the initial topic, you might want to look up US Army Report 49...or the Korean scholars....Professor Park Yuha or Professor Oh. Professor Park actually wrote a book about it and then it was banned for going against the South Korean government's vision of history that it taught to its people. I believe that they tried to prosecute her for defamation for that. Since you brought up the US, you should look up the rape of Okiniwa with happened during the ending of WW2

It's kinda sad how people don't know the atrocities these women suffered from. Like we're talking 14+ year olds having to serve 60-80+ men day in day out, away from their homes and family. Then those that weren't killed having to live a lie. And those that did have the courage to come out with their story till these day don't have an official apology from the government. I understand that it's not the fault of Japan and the Japanese people today, but as government sometimes one needs to apologize for the atrocities of the past. Germany was able to be forgiven and accepted because they did not hide their truth. One must educate those who came after ww2 so that the same horrors are not repeated. Hi, the Japanese have apologized for warcrimes around asia a 1000 times, unofficially and officially. Go look it up on youtube they even paid millions of millions of Dollars to South Korea back in the days, but the korean government was corrupt and stole the money. Few years ago the Japanese government sat down with Korean government and they came to an agreement. They again payed around 10 million dollars and again again apologized for the atrocities of the war and for the comfort women. I do however agree that the schools in Japan should make the warcrimes of Imperial Japan more visible and frank.

I'm not Korean nor Japanese, but I think that history is meant to be kept and remembered. There's a saying that one should "forgive but not forget." So it seems irresponsible and selfish for the Japanese government to want to hide the damages they have done in history and impose that the victims forget about the events. If anything, Japan also should have something in their land that acknowledges and remembers the victims and events. Here in the U.S., we don't try to hide or deny about the damages our country has done to Japan during WWII (although Japan was the one that attacked us first). Strictly speaking in the name of good ethics, the Japanese government should approach this matter with more empathy.
Countries have their own versions of history (even the south koreans) for their own agendas. That's just common sense
The US, just like canada, have a hard time aknowledging the damage caused to their colonised population (the first nations) even in 2018, so north america is not really an exemple when it come to apologies for past actions as a coloniser. Canada just formulated an official appology for the horror of the

I totally agree to most of your commentary. However, in some cases the US is as great in hiding history as Japan. If you look up on land earning in the early years and how natives were treated in your history book, you probably will only find some frontier heroes and that's it. Sorry dude. Let me tell you why Japanese government visit Yasukuni-Shrine. It's because we have to remember there were so many victims in WW2 and before WW1, too. That shrine includes victims of non-Japanese, too. As a leader of Japan, as a symbol of Japan, and for the victims in wars, we have to keep praying and promissing that we would never break out wars forever with our ancestor by continuing to go there. It's one of our religion, our feeling of war, Japanese custom, our culture to think about ancestor all the time. We have to remember that Japanese and some non-Japanese fought against white-prioritized countries which were trying to just invading and exploiting from Asian. Why can't we pray for ancestor? Can you stop your country's religion? No.
Anyway, there are so many hopes and thoughts and meaning in going and praying in Yasukuni. No one can blame for that. UK, US, ES, French even apologized to victims before?

So most japanese pepole think it was a resolved problem since finally and irreversibly agreement was concluded.
In my opinion, our government need to let us learn more about comfort women issues.
And each of us know and think about seriously.

I'm Korean and know about the apologies Japan's government did. There were about 15 apologies from former Japan's minister and some of them (like Kono statement) looked pretty sincere to me. Before Abe I think there were various opinions inside Korea toward Japan's apologies. Some people said Japan apologiesed so lets move for better relationships while other said said the apolgies don't include the text that, What Japan's government have done at the past, were A 'crime' and what Japan gave to Korean goverment wasn't 'reparations' but 'compensation'(reparations is the money cost for crime and compensation is money just to compensate. Kor goverment asked Japan to change it to reparations but they didn't changed it). Anyway when Abe become prime minister we heard that he started changing highscool history textbook (れきししゅうせいしゅぎ [歴史修正主義]) and deny what Japan have done during WW2. And other ministers around Abe also shares same thoughts about fomer history(like Kono daro 河野 太郞). or like Koike Yuriko(こいけゆりこ | 小池百合子 ) she stoped cherishing Chosen people who were killed by Japanese while Great Kanto earthquake (關東大地震). we can often hear about these kind of knews and these become the reason why Korean people think Apologies are not sincere. Apology should regret the past and change future behavior right?
Anyway my conclusion is same like you. I also think that Korea and Japan students learn more about history and face the fact and then there would be much more healthy opinions to each contries.(sorry about my english skills)

shoegazer64 1896년 고종의 아관파천 이후 조선에서 영향력이 커지자 조선 내에서는 고종의 환궁과 자주독립을 외쳤죠. 그래서 1897년 러시아 공사관에서 경운궁으로 거쳐 옮겨 원구단에서 황제 즉위식을 가져 국호는 대한제국, 연호는 광무로 대한제국정부 수립을 공포한 동시에 자주독립을 선언했습니다.
이후 러.일 전쟁이 일어나는데 일본은 1904년에 선전포고없이 치졸하게 인천에 있던 러시아 함대와 요동반도의 뤼순 항을 습격합니다. 일제는 전쟁비용을 미국과 영국에 의존하고 있었는데 전쟁 비용을 감당하지 못해 전쟁을 끊내려 합니다. 그래서 미국 대통령에게 중재를 요청했고 미국과 영국은 평화를 유지하기위해서 일본이 조선에서 세력 유지할 권리를 보장한다는 명목하에 일본이 조선을 식민지화 하는 것을 승인해주었습니다. 이게 1907년 가쓰라-태프트 밀약이라하며 조선뿐만아니라 다른 아시아국가를 식민지화 하는것 또한 인정받게 된것입니다.
(영국은 인도를 지배 한다는 것을 일본에게 승인받음)
그 후 일본은 군사를 일으켜 한일의정서를 강제로 맺게 하였고 1905년엔 조선의 왕궁을 포위하여 을사5적(이중에 이완용 있음)을 내새워 외교권 박탈하는 을사조약을 강행시킵니다.
고종은 반대했지만 일제는 대한제국의 정부 외교권을 없애고 대한제국의 각국 공사관을 철수시켰습니다.
조선의 민중들은 분통하여 일제와 나라를 팔아먹은 친일파를 비판하며 일제의 대한 적개심을 드러내는 운동을 합니다.
일제가 강제로 조약을 맺음으로써 고종은 1907년 네덜란드 헤이그에서 열리는 만국평화회의에 밀사를 보냅니다. 외교권회복을 위해서죠. 그러나 영국이나 러시아 일본같은 제국주의 국가는 조선같은 식민지화 된 국가에게 참여권을 주지않습니다. 만국평화회의라 불리던 그 회의는 제국주의 국가들이 식민지 국가를 분할하기 위해 만든자리였기 때문입니다.
일제가 이것을 빌미로1907년 한일신협약을 맺어 대한제국의 내정까지 장악해나갔죠. 조선 내정 통치자를 일본인으로 바꾸었고 고종을 강제 퇴위시켜 친일파를 앞세웠습니다.
조선의 민중들이 저항을 하니 일제는 악법을 만들어 독립활동을 막았습니다.
이완용은 나라를 팔아먹은 매국노로, 이토히로부미의 제안으로 고종을 협박하여 강제조약을 맺게 한 인물입니다. 또한 1907년 헤이그특사 빌미로
이토히로부미의 사주로 고종의 퇴위를 강요하여 순종을 즉위시켜 조선의 내정권을 박탈 시켰습니다.

한일병합조약이 오늘날까지 논쟁이 일어날만큼 목소리가 나오는 건 저도 알고있었습니다.
그 병합 조약은 일제의 강제가 있었다는 사실이라는 것, 조선의 의지가 아니었다는 것을 말하고자 흐름을 얘기 했던건데 제 말의 포인트를 못잡으시네요.

사실은 일본이 사과와 잘못은 인정한게 맞죠 아베 이전에.. 다만 우리가 진정으로 화난 이유는 사과를 안했다는것이아니라 뉘우침이 없다는겁니다. 독일만 보더라도 계속해서 사과하고 아이들에게 다신 일어나지않게 올바른교육을 시키고 잘못을 바로 잡아가고 있는가운데 일본은 오히려 신사참배와 왜곡된 교과서 그리고 편향된미디어로 정치에까지 이용하고 있습니다. 애

I am Filipino. I'm mixed, so I consider myself mixed Asian.
I think the reason why Japan doesn't apologize is because of "honne" and "tatemae". It's cultural.
The Japanese may be genuine ashamed that they did those horrible acts, but they are also instinctively bound by their own culture, so they do not apologize directly and in the open.
"Tatemae" means "the social facade one puts up in public". Japanese culture's number one enemy is shame. They are obsessively afraid of it.
So, to them, "tatemae" is more important. Their culture places more value on the facade. "Honne", on the other hand, is the opposite. It's the "truth or reality".

EKDI sjs8 umm hmm you can look at in very many different situation... personally I'm in fan of Japanese culture and Idol in Japan but I'm also Korean I'm born in Korea and learn about this situation in side of Koreans people but since I didn't go to Japanese school and learned in their side of views I can't tell you or the world Japanese people are bad and so on but as human being and as a person who live in this world people except for Koreans doesn't really know what happened there is lots of war and different situations that every country knows but only this kind of problem people doesn't really know people and citizens in Korea they just want the Japanese to a knowledg what they did in the past and make the world know that you guys apologized it or even apologize in world wide many many years past since then but there is a lots of people and Korean citizens who cries and remember of that situation even elementary school students cried while listening to this... we as Korean wants Japanese to just make things straight they Japanese people are basically saying I gave you guys money and said sorry now we want to remake our image for the world.. how about the Koreans if you were that person who listen to those sentence and if you were women who got raped for the Japanese army would you be saying "oh aright then you guys aplozied so I will just forget about it" people says does kind of words in the comment but when their listening to news when" a old man raped a little child" you guys freak out say all those swears I want you to at least know what really happened back then and then write this comment!
I have to question it. If 200,000 of those women were dragged off the peninsula into sexual slavery, where were the South Korean men when it was happening? I mean, anywhere in the world, if you drag that amount of women out of the country, men are going to have something to say about it.
Also, why did over 200,000 Koreans attempt to join the Japanese Imperial Army if supposedly Japan had taken 200,000 of their women? That doesn’t make sense. President’s Park’s father rose to become a distinguished officer in the Japanese Imperial Army. Why would he have served in an army that was abusing his fellow countrywomen?

Hi, the Japanese have apologized for warcrimes around asia a 1000 times, unofficially and officially. Go look it up on youtube they even paid millions of millions of Dollars to South Korea back in the days, but the korean government was corrupt and stole the money. Few years ago the Japanese government sat down with Korean government and they came to an agreement. They again payed around 10 million dollars and again again apologized for the atrocities of the war and for the comfort women. I do however agree that the schools in Japan should make the warcrimes of Imperial Japan more visible and frank, and that is probably because of" Honne" and "Tatemae".

Ken Rasmussen They didn’t consult any of the korean comfort women before reaching that compromise or apologize to them individually. What those comfort women want is not money, they want a sincere apology and the inclusion of the atrocities in their history like the Germans did and still do for their atrocities to people.
@@KenKobayashiRasmussen If you think about it they will never do it. Every country likes to show the good things about themselves and not the atrocities that they have commited. But I do agree that the Japanese government has indeed apologized and given money to the Koreans. I honestly have no idea what else they want. It's nit as if time could go back for history to be changed. My country was under the Japanese rule but we are not making an uproar like Korea. Instead we learn the let go and move on for our country to progress. To add on, there was a survey conducted by the Koreans and it showed that many of the people that claimed that they were raped by the Japanese were in fact prostitudes. Those claiming that they were taken away in jeeps made a mistake because Japan had no jeeps. When asked to prove their credibility, many of them could not prodice any.
They were never really heartfelt apologies tho. There are a lot of instances where the Japanese government acts as if they did nothing wrong and try to shush it.
