It’s a scale. If your level of play is a 9, and your level of mess is a 7, drama with teammates, coaches, refs, you get to stay in the league and get paid. When you age or get injured and your level of play is now a 6, but you’re still on level 7 with all the mess, it’s a net negative, and no one wants you. The best thing is to never start all the mess. Teams will keep you around later even if your game drops off.

He just wasn't actually as good offensively as he looked. Across his last 5 seasons he shot about 40% from the field, and this was while being a very poor 3 point shooter. He shot 33%, 34%, 36%, 33%, and 33% from 3 across his last 5 seasons. On top of this, he only averaged a little over 2 assists 4 of those 5 seasons.
If you don't space the floor, and you don't pass the ball well, it's already hard to justify playing you, on top of the fact that he was horrible defensively. The only thing he really brought to the table was above average midrange shooting, but most teams don't want non-stars taking many midranges generally, especially not as your only thing.

I get the point but Carmelo, Jamal, Lou...played 19, 20 and 17 seasons. Not good examples. Lou was even somewhat of an anomaly being a 6'1" inefficient scorer with ehhh defense lasting that long.

They're white, that's the stigma...they can only shoot 3s or play scrappy D
Big men who are white are stimgatized as soft
Everyone gets labelled in all sports, reason you don't see white corners and hardly any black centers
