5 Dangerous Teas You Should Never Drink
    5. Comfrey Tea
Comfrey tea, derived from the leaves of the comfrey plant, has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its potential healing properties.
However, recent studies have shed light on the potential dangers associated with its consumption.
Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, compounds that can be toxic to the liver when consumed in large amounts or over an extended period.
Research has shown that prolonged ingestion of comfrey tea can lead to liver damage and even increase the risk of certain types of cancer.
    4. Lobelia Tea
Lobelia tea, derived from the lobelia plant, has a long history of use in traditional medicine for respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis.
However, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with its consumption.
Lobelia contains a compound called lobeline, which can have significant effects on the cardiovascular system.
    3. Chaparral Tea
Chaparral tea, derived from the leaves of the chaparral plant, has gained attention for its purported detoxifying properties.
However, it is essential to be aware of the potential risks associated with this tea.
Chaparral contains a compound called nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), which has been found to have toxic effects on the liver and kidneys.
Research suggests that regular consumption of chaparral tea can lead to liver damage and kidney dysfunction.
    2. Bitter Orange Tea
Bitter orange tea, extracted from the peel of the bitter orange fruit, is often promoted as a weight loss aid and digestive tonic.
However, it is crucial to be aware of the potential risks associated with this tea.
Bitter orange contains a compound called synephrine, which has stimulant effects on the cardiovascular system.
    1. Sassafras Tea
Sassafras tea, derived from the roots or bark of the sassafras tree, has a distinct flavor and has been used in traditional medicine for various purposes.
However, it is important to be aware of the potential health risks associated with this tea.
Sassafras contains a compound called safrole, which has been classified as a potential carcinogen by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In Europe country folks drink celandine for producing gall-fluid und helping digestion. That's about as dangerous than the first and the last tea, probably having identical alcaloids. Allegedly it causes liver tumors, but my Greatuncle, who lived up to 99 used to drink that tea at least the last 40 years of his life, because he said it really helped him. We told him, that it is poisonous but he said, we knew nothing, it was a known fact (not to us nor to any books of traditional medicine) not to drink more than 6 blossoms and leaf-fragments a week. The amount turns something into a poison.

I grew up drinking sassafras tea. We would have it every winter and no one in my family ever suffered any health issues. My Gran would make it for us especially if we’re had a cold or sore throat, but if that didn’t work, we got a hot toddy, lol. I could not believe when groceries stopped selling sassafrass . But hey, anytime the government agencies get involved, it isn’t for our own good, they have another motive always!

…. Just consider yourself lucky. Just be aware that the sassafras tea has a compound in it that could be carcinogenic. Don’t get mad at the video, and please don’t get mad at science. This is only a Health warning regarding sassafras tea. There are many of us who are health challenged or immune system challenged - we’re very happy that you suffered no side effects from your use of the tea. And don’t pull out the old attack upon the government and its agencies. Every minute of the day, the government and science are doing good work to keep you safe and healthy.

Which other motive would that be?
You should google the subject. Sassafras teas without safrole are available, so you can enjoy it without risking your health. If you really want to prove your point by risking your health, there is sassafras bark available too.
Your grams may have been a very wise and nice lady, but that doesn't guarantee that her knowledge of chemistry and carcinogens was on par. It has happened many times that plants traditionally used for many things are either useless or harmful.
Rue tea, for example. When I was little, everyone drank it to calm an upset stomach. I happens that rue is abortive. Imagine a woman who doesn't know she is pregnant and drinks a lot of rue tea for nausea. Plants can be harmful, toxic, and deadly.
Also, as a taxpayer, you are more valuable to the government alive and healthy than sick or dead. Maybe that is the government's hidden intention when it bans toxic stuff?

They are not bad teas. Anything substance or food you take in large amounts can be toxic, even too much water can kill you. I know someone who's father drank comfrey tea every day for years and was healthy. Many of the other commenters, including myself, drink/have drunk sassafras. It's what they originally used to make root beer. I have also taken chapparel for a short duration (it's medicine), and drank bitter orange tea on many occasions including tonight (I like the flavor). The only one I don't mess with is lobelia, because it can make you vomit if you take too much.

A couple of the herbs you list as non-consumable are still fine to use in a limited way. Safrole, or sassasfras, which grows plentifully around me, and is used, was found to be carcinogenic in rats. But those rats were given quantities of it that in humans would have been the equivalent of drinking 40-50 gallons of it a day. THAT would not just be carcinogenic.
I've had periods of eating several of these as a pot vegetable, comfrey included. I grow it. my neighbors grow it. Family of seven used to use it as I do. None of them ever developed cancer. But, then, they didn't eat the kind of quantities comparable to the lab reports.
None of these had a single dose toxicity. Yet, you are scaring many people off of a single dose possible medicine, and definitely dosage that lasts perhaps a week.
There are numerous garden plants that eaten in large quantities damage you. Many of the leafy vegetables are high in oxalates. Your body produces oxalic acid as a waste product, but eating the vegetables and there are some grains with it too, or eating foods that have it, can give you kidney stones; can thin your blood (anti-coagulant), which is why in some circulation problems with their associated medicines the doctor tells you "no salads".
Yet, nobody ever gives warnings about eating these "foods", which literally stops nutrient absorption of your other foods.
Good job on the herbs that are good as replacements. Only gripe with that is I think you used them to repeat the message after each of your subject herbs and their lack of safety. But, I leave spinach alone, although I love it. Same thing with swiss chard and kale.

    • @edsiceloff9473
      @edsiceloff9473 Před 11 měsíci

Sassafras is not saffron. Saffron comes from crocus flowers. @@Mamarita3333

    • @Me-mn4nw
      @Me-mn4nw Před 11 měsíci +2

Saffron comes from the stamens in the crocus plant which is grown in Iran. Sassafras tea is made from the root of the sassafras tree and can be found on the East coast primarily in the parts from North Carolina and further North to Maine. Usually found in the mountainous regions that are wooded.

Every plant can be bad if, you overuse it, even camomilla, so is cloves, cinnamon, rosmary, thyme and especially salvia, when given traditional herbs. And green tea can cause heartissues, too, if you take too much. But one to three cups a day - especially only if a sickness is acute - hardly ever killed somebody. - Well, but for aconite. Aconite is only for tiny ,almost homoeopatic pharmacy-dosages, not for homemade tea.

What I'm hearing is one should not take any drug at lethal doses or on a regular basis. This is true for prescription drugs as well as herbal remedies. One would expect that under the guidance of an expert (traditional expert for herbs, doctor for prescriptions) either approach is safe. I suspect the big danger is to use both herns and prescriptions since there are potential interactions that doctors and herbalists/shamans may not be aware of that would be dangerous.
