    5 Reasons Why your Cactus dies after Repotting 🪴🌵🥰❤

      Is 50% standard potting soil, 30% sand, 10% gravel, and 10% perlite a good mix? I grow Eastern Prickly Pears in very poorly draining clay soil, and I occasionally see mushy red and orange spots in the winter, presumably rot. But it hardly ever kills them. They recover quickly in spring, some of the most versatile plants I've ever seen. They can grow in muddy fields, thin woodlands, and vast open deserts.

      @@ulyssesnovotni3111 Thats fantastic you grow Eastern Prickly pears, the Opuntia prickly pears are definitely more tolerant of soils than some of the other desert cacti are, ideally its best to use extra gravel, e.g 40% standard potting soil with 20% gravel, 20% perlite and 20% sand, as this would be very well draining, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX

    A piece of advice that goes along with "reason number one" is to water your cactus BEFORE you intend to repot it. It will allow your plant to take up some water so it can weather the dry spell of not getting watered after you've repotted it. Watering before repotting will also make it easier to remove the old soil, especially if it was planted in peat moss.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thats a fantastic tip Terry :-D especially as it will help the cactus to take up water beforehand, and very good to water before repotting cacti that are potted up in peat, as peat can be like hard cardboard to try to remove when totally dry, and it could take weeks before the roots can re grow again if they all break off with the awful rock solid peat, thanks so much Terry for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle XXXX

    When repotting orchids in a wet / dry cycle, point 1 applies as well but not for that long 😅👍🏼 Media, yes... Will take out an orchid root system as well 👍🏼 environmental influences, yes, check 😃 pot size... can't match that one, too many variables, but yes, pot being wet for too long could be an issue 👍🏼 oooohhh, yes, drainage holes, definitely a must for orchids as well 👍🏼👍🏼 rough repotting can be problematic for orchids as well, but sometimes its a must. Wow, I cant grow a cactus to save my life, but thought this super interesting to compare. Hope you don't mind, Lynn ❤ great video 🥰

    Thanks for the info. I am definitely guilty of too big a pot sometimes. I did try trimming roots on a repot for a Cactus all I can say is it did not kill it, growing but not noticed it making a difference. I do give a single spray or two of water on a repot in my mind it is to connect the roots to the soil better. and I am in a tropical country so the moisture is gone very quickly. I certainly lost a couple pf cacti when first starting, using pots with drainage but with deep saucers underneath that retained the water, duh!

    Yes I stopped using the commercial bagged, pre-mixed cacti/succulent stuff a while back. I couldn't understand why they all have peat, though everywhere says cacti need to dry quickly between watering. Also, when i first got into housplants in 2018, i made the same mistake with some aloe vera I got before i knew anything! I put small aloe pups in the big 10 inch ceramic pot thinking it would be room for the roots to grow🤣worse I didn't know about lighting either and just had it under a weak light. They didn't die but got very etiolated, and edema before I finally did research and put them in proper pots. They lived but never grew much. I eventually let them go.

    An excellent and very informative video Lyn, I'm definitely guilty of no. 3 although I think I've mostly got away with it with my Trichocereus cacti as they are less sensitive to moist conditions than many cacti, and also grow faster. They are a great genus of cacti to start learning with, but have their limitations when you start growing more difficult plants! I've got some Saguaro and Pachycereus Pringlei seedlings that will need repotting soon and I know they can both be very sensitive to conditions.

    I committed #5.
    Repotted about 25 or so in February, while in their dormancy, with a complete root pruning on each one. After the first couple hours, I was getting anxious and started to speed things up. I was kinda bummed that I felt rushed, cause I wanted this to be a meditative process, like making one of those sand and stone Zen gardens.
    Nope, i wasn't built for that.. Anyway, i only lost one, and it happened within just a few days of replanting. Something made me check on the only one that didn't make it, and was already completely mush, just above the substrate line. Thankfully, it was only a small PC marked for grafting, so I wasn't too upset about losing it, but still, it bothers me that i ended its time.
    I recently started the process of waking them up by misting with water, allowing just enough to drip down their sides and into the soil. Will begin the process of moving them all outdoors here in approximately 30days.

      So sorry to hear you lost one of your Cacti Adam, I always find the transitioning period between late winter and early spring is the most challenging for the cacti, misting them is a fantastic idea as the sides and grooves on the cacti help to transport the light watering into the root ball, and wow well done on repotting 25 of your cacti in Feb, I still have so many left to repot haha, I am so looking forward to when I can move out the plants I have indoors, but its gone cold again here in Ireland with just 6-7c temperatures and 1c forecast for tonight, brrrrr bring on the sun and heat haha, thanks so much Adam for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX

    I can't believe how many cacti plants you have lol. I have some Espostoopsis dybowskii cacti, a cluster of six in one pot and two individual ones in their own pots. The cluster was a Christmas present from 2023 and the problem is that most of them have some etiolation. I'm guessing that the shop they were purchased from had them growing somewhere with little light. If I place the pot somewhere sunny will they recover slightly or will they always remain this way?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thats fantastic that you have some Espostoopsis cacti, they are amazing cacti to grow, the good news is they will recover and the new growth will grow normal, if they are very etioliated you can cut off the etioliated tips and the cacti will side shoot from the top, but if the etiolation is not severe you can leave them and although the etioliated part will always be there, over time as the cacti grow taller it will become much less noticeable, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

      @desertplantsofavalon  Před 3 měsíci

      So sorry to hear that its difficult for you to find the ingredients for making your own soil, if you can't get commercial cactus and succulent soil you can use commercial houseplant soil and can add extra perlite and chicken grit to the houseplant soil, e.g 30% houseplant soil with 35% perlite and 35% chicken grit, as long as the chicken grit does not have anything added to it it will be fine to use, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX

    Hi Lynn, great video
    My question is when you repot do you only take off all the soil if the cactus is in bad soil a lot of peat like when you buy it first if the cactus is in good soil like you have potted it before do you just drop pot it without disturbing the roots?

    • @desertplantsofavalon

      So happy you loved the video Tina :-D yes if the cactus was in soil that is similar to the soil you will be potting it up in then I would drop pot it without disturbing the roots, the only time I have to loosen up the soil from the roots is if the roots are very rootbound and or the soil is bad soil with a lot of peat, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX

I have a variegated one that is not growing many leaves for me. Do you know what I am doing wrong. It is in the right size pot and mostly draining soil (premade potting mix from the store). What do I do ? I must be doing something. Not sure if this plant is what you have. It is an inside plant.
