- Ever since 2004, hopeful fashion designers have dreamed of going on Project Runway and having their talent finally appreciated by the judges and host Heidi Klum. However, as with pretty much any reality show, things are a lot more complicated behind the scenes than they appear. Contestants are subjected to 18-hour days, which often begin with a camera crew waking them up, and they’re not allowed to use cell phones or any kind of social media. In addition, only a few designers in the show’s history have made a serious splash in the industry. Let’s take a look at the untold truth of Project Runway.

$2500 an episode for Tim Gunn? He's the only reason I watch the show! They could cut out Nina and Zac and even Heidi (honestly, no one would miss them) pay Tim Gunn their salaries and the show would be awesome.

I met Tim Gun at a speaking engagement at Drake University. My partner and I were the last people he signed books for. Brilliant and kind man. To me, he was the show. Honest, true , and really cared about the contestants. I’m a fan for life! Wish I had one of his ties! 🥰
I love this show but I did always figure out who was going to win and who was going to go home by the amount of footage they showed from that particular person. I would also love to hear some facts about the models that model for them, I know they used to have a show for them after PR.

This show used to be good when it was on Bravo. The budget, the talent, the production all tanked when it went to Lifetime. So sad...

Trying to get viewers to agree with their decisions? Really, I rarely agreed with their idiotic decisions, not wonder people in the industry don't take the show seriously. Some of the "'winners" were the lousiest of the bunch. In some cases, I had no doubt who would win based on "some judges" ogling some contestants, especially the season with the boy child, who they kept keeping around for some "unknown" reason, which all the other contestant hated. Finally had too much and stopped watching. Tim was the number one reason I used to watch, one of the classiest guys ever to honor the screen.

That Thing You See At The Corner Of Your Eye I can't remember but he looked like he was about 16, had the talent of an amoeba and the other designer kept telling him he was only there because one of the judges had a crush on him (same thing that I thought). Maybe it was my friend Alexander, seeing how upset he got.

And now Heidi, Tim and Zac have left the show. I'm not sure I can continue to watch without Heidi and Tim. At least Tim and Heidi are teaming up for a new fashion reality show on Amazon. Losing Project Runway is another blow during an absolutely shit year, so I PRAY that their new show is good.
Mondo was the winner....Gretchan has nothing to offer. The judges decision was wrong. Maybe Michael Kors felt treathen by Mondo's creativity......terrible, terrible!!!!

Project Runway!! I love this show, for Tim Gunn, I'm a huge huge fan, for Nina, for Heidi and Zac and of course Michael Kors when he used to be on it. I love the dresses that the designers make , some of them top class. Erin's collections were definitely a let-down, others were much better. Swapnil from India was another great and sad that he was out but towards the end. i've even downloaded Tim Gunn's book "Tim Gunn's Golden Rules" and read it , good book. He's one polished , classy and kind gentleman, not afraid or embarrassed to weep with the contestants. Greetings and bravo Tim and all the best , from Mussoorie, India

Totally should do one for Rupaul's Drag Race
A year before RPDR, project runway had a drag queen challenge and rupaul was a guest judge. Boy, did she look straight up "man, in a dress", all T, all shade, BUSTED!! Nurse! Nurse! Like she just started doing drag that morning! Acid Betty was one of the runway queens. There was also a sharon needles and a farrah moans, but unfortunately not the same 2 from rpdr.

Subscribe to roscoes CZcams channel. The queens are invited to perform and watch the episode and they record them and put it on CZcams. The girls spill Alot of tea while talking to the host and the viewers

Okay the reason for no media is so they don't cheat because if they could use the internet and magazines and all that then they could take a look at clothing pictures and try to recreate that look.

I was done with this show after they did an All Star season several years back. First of all they included past WINNERS. Was supposed to be fan faves runner's up. Second one of the designers, who went on to win over a much better designer, had become a personal friend of Tim Gunn. They even had a book out. How is that fair. Like the contestant said the show is fixed and fake. Same as all reality shows.

That's crazy. Tim Gunn was the show. Heidi was only there briefly at the beginning of each episode to describe the challenge and then at the end for the judging.
here’s some advice: if you wanna be big in the fashion industry, do NOT do project runway.

I believe Tim Gunn got the Creative Director gig at Liz Claiborne for awhile after being on PR, not sure what he's doing creatively now that Bravo has it back w/ new judges etc...HE should never be replaced: Christian as a mentor? I don't know 'bout THAT.

I'm laughing at how many people commenting have such low comprehension language skills. Mostly about what Tim Gunn is being paid. A time he was relatively unknown to the general public. He makes a lot more now. Those figures they gave were from season 1 & 2. Who do you see in all the promos with Heidi? Tim. It isn’t hard to see how the show changed for him too. He now is there for judging (which he wasn’t before) and has a Tim Gunn save now too. I am pretty sure these changes came with pay hikes.

how is the judging totally fake? how do they decide who they want to eliminate? i feel like in season 15 its one whole big set up to get erin to win. she was clearly better than everyone too early in the show so they put her on the bottom a couple of episodes to keep us watching.
Yeah, I agree. I felt that way about last season, too. I knew Ashley would win all along, because it'd be great for their ratings, even though her clothes were nothing special.

And that last revelation shows us what we already know...that Tim Gunn does it from a love of teaching, mentoring and fashion. So glad they started paying him though, he is what makes the show.

When they continually kept Santino in season 2 i knew it was just for the reality of it, because some of his designs were just awful and everyone including the judges knew it but because he was such a hot-head and made dumb jokes they had to keep him cuz viewers probably enjoyed his presence.

Well, now I'm just confused about how eliminations would work if no one knows whose a finalist until fashion week
This is what happens: The final 3 get to make a collection and will compete at Fashion Week. When Fashion Week is happening, the show is still airing. Because the Project Runway show at Fashion Week is an event a lot of people will be attending, there is a big chance people will post on social media which designers are showing. And therefor everyone would know who the finalists are, thus making the television show less surprising and interesting to watch. Therefor, not only the final 3 get to show a collection at Fashion Week, but a few other eliminated designers as well. The crowd watching the show don't know who the real finalists are, and who the decoys are.

sounds like America's next top model. CoverGirl chose the winner long before the finale aired. Models weren't taken seriously and some ended up broke, in jail, on drugs, or whatever.

Just finished watching Season 16.....am not sure how JCPenneys will like your choice of Winner! Margarita was so much more sale-able, I thought. With Hurricane Maria hitting PR, the money would have been such a help to her in starting over. She would have been a very good investment for PR and PR! lol

Cilla Villadsen to be honest Tim Gunn is like one of the most important people in fashion business, he is a genius tailor and designer. His comment and what he teach some of them there if it could be sell worth more than that.
Tim Gunn has a good eye and excellent taste. Those are two things that cannot be taught. A Fine Arts degree makes perfect sense for someone in his position.
You don't have t do anything to prove you have excellent taste, you just have to appreciate.
WikeddTung geez what's your problem with Tim Gunn. No he doesn't make clothes. But he's undoubtedly a tastemaker. His personality, taste, and integrity make him a fan favourite on PR and (arguably?) It's biggest draw in terms of the cast. The argument people are making is that all of the above warrants a larger salary than $2500 an episode ESPECIALLY if the judges are making more, because as famous as Heidi is, no one's here for her commentary.
$4500 isnt all That shabby. But yeah Tim Gunn earns quite a bit more now that with all the success of the show and that he's a Project Runway icon!

As far as I am concerned, I will no longer be a viewer of Project Runway. The judges selection process this year was a nuance and cooky!! Just like the recent string of designers who have won... namely Season 15.. Erin. The editing of the show is poor and readily shows who are the judge favorites and who will get the boot. This season, they had all of this good, bad, ugly advice for the designers. Yet, you could tell who they favored, because they would only give her/him thumbs up comments. It was obvious and contrived

***** Welcome to reality from people who do not look for excuses. If the show did not exist how would you get your name and brand exposed to millions of people. Whiners can take their "you owe me attitude" and hit the door if you object to how the show is structured. If you can't cash in on the exposure that's your problem. Where do you think some of these designers would be without this opportunity. Obviously the designers disagree with you because they continue to participate.

The show is so fake, you basically can figure out by at least episode 2 who is going to win. I get that is part of reality TV but you'd think with all the effort they put in not spoiling who winner is they let 10 show at fashion week, they'd wouldn't be so obvious with the editing.

I love the show. If it weren't for Project Runway, I wouldn't have considered a career in Fashion Design; I am currently a student learning to become one. But I do agree like many reality TV shows is mostly scripted.

Another untold truth (well its told now), Tim Gun despises Zac Posen, Isaac Mizrahi and Nina Garcia to a lessor extent. Zac Posen also hates Tim Gun. And Tim doesn't like Heidi as much as it seems on the show.
