      If you like UK panel shows then there are at least two or three others that you really must try 👌
      Both 'Would I Lie To You' and '8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown' are superb, and they have a lot of the same people on them that appear on 'QI'. I don't know if they're on Netflix but I'd imagine you can find episodes on this here YouTubamy-jig. They're both similarly laid-back and free-wheeling and they both specialise in funny people riffing off each other.

    • @302Diane

      @@thesprawl2361 I second both of those recommendations. There are about four series of WILTY? on Britbox, and you can find most of 8OO10CDC on CZcams. It took me a bit to get into the last one but it was worth it.

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 Před 5 lety

      @@302Diane Which series of WILTY are on Britbox if you mind me asking?
      It's always puzzled me that US TV doesn't seem to have these kinds of panel shows.
      The only times I've seen American producers try it they don't quite grasp the appeal of them, which is the relaxed, improvisational feel. They don't realise that that's what sets these shows apart.
      A perfect example is a show on Netflix called The Fix. They have a panel of funny people, a brilliant host in Jimmy Carr, and then they just get the guests to do little routines that they've prepared before the show. There's no room for any banter, or on-the-fly back and forths, or anything like that. It's just dead. (It's also unwatchably preachy but that's another issue.)

    • @302Diane
      @302Diane Před 5 lety +1

      @@thesprawl2361 I believe it's series 8 to the present. When new episodes are aired, they show up on Britbox within 24 hours.
      I agree with you about the odd American failure to screen decent panel shows. It's particularly strange considering that we had some classics back in the 1950s and 60s. "What's My Line" comes immediately to mind. In recent years, we seem to value scripted comedy over the wit of a David Mitchell or Sue Perkins.

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 Před 5 lety +1

      @@302Diane Never heard of What's My Line. I might check that out.
      I've always thought the WILTY format would work absolutely anywhere in the world, because it's interesting on different levels. It's about body language and lying, and everyone thinks they're good at judging that, and it also demands improvisation, which forces people into saying daft, funny things. So far there's only been a Czech version though, and it was awful.

    Am I the only one who thinks Phill is one of the least funny guests on QI? It does feel like it sometimes. He just seems to YELL HIS WEAK JOKES at an INCREDIBLY OBNOXIOUS VOLUME, often when someone else is halfway through speaking themselves.
    I always remember this moment in either 'Gallimaufrey' or 'Happiness'(I think the latter) - Phill made this incredibly lame joke and the crowd laughed half-heartedly then began to lapse into silence...and just as the silence was settling in Stephen made this strange involuntary noise signaling his contempt and disappointment. A kind of bored, depressed sigh. He didn't even know he'd done it at first, but everyone on the panel besides Phil burst out laughing. Andy Hamilton was crying laughing and either him or Alan Davies said something like 'you're not supposed to say it out loud' - because it was the first time anyone had referenced just how weak Phil's material can be. The laughter was one of instant mutual recognition: everyone must've been thinking the same thing.
    That was a telling moment because it showed just how sick of Phill's crap jokes the rest of the panelists were.
    The annoying thing is that he's obviously a lovely, warm, decent guy, so I feel a bit bad for finding him so profoundly unfunny.

      @@dancingvirgil It's a shame because I like him as a person. There are plenty of comedians I don't find funny, but usually it's because I don't like them. But not in this case. He's a nice guy, he's just consistently unfunny. It wouldn't be a big deal except it feels like he's on all the bloody time too.
