    Superb videos. You have done us pen aficionados a great service through documenting these factory visits. Most importantly, Luca in his understated style has answered the one question that has flummoxed most of us for several years. Why are proper flex nibs not made anymore? Like he says because the alloys that are available in the market are designed not for elasticity but for ease of workability which is what most of the market for sheet metal demands ( I am guessing for jewellery) and thus it is not economical to produce alloys that have elastic properties. So its possible to make alloys for flex nibs just not economical for sheet manufacturers. And all these years we thought that alchemy of flex nibs had been lost. Fascinating.

    Very nice video! I just noticed a few things. The celluloid you showed as the 'Israel' celluloid I believe is actually the royal blue celluloid. And, the filling system they use on the Wahl Eversharps are pneumatic systems and not a Vacumatic system like the ones Parker used on some P51s and on the Vacumatic pens themselves.

  • @LeFatalpotato

    I know it's probably a little too late to ask this but, why can't they produce celluloids anymore? Some old style omas paragons are being sold for more than 2k euros on ebay. I think there's enough market to be profitable for a small company like this

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Před 6 lety

      its a lost art , the celluloid witch is used today is from almost 1930 1950 , and all the people that did manufactured it are not living no more ,its a lost art like many things that are not anymore . we just have to see if the companies look to invest intro training people and giving a go to making celluloid again.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Před 6 lety

      and the only reason why a pen out of that cost that much is because there is no more celluloid available , if there was , the price will go down with the amount of material being produced

  • @raphthecollector3824
    @raphthecollector3824 Před 4 lety +1

    Do they co-own that Omas stock (particularly the Omas Arco) with ASC? What is their relationship with ASC?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Před 4 lety

      The entire celluloid stock belongs to asc only , Leonardo used to manufacture their pens - but in 2018 they stopped working for asc

    • @raphthecollector3824
      @raphthecollector3824 Před 4 lety

      @@pen.venture very interesting. Do you mean that ASC now make their own pens entirely? Since Pen Family seems to include Wahl Eversharp, Oldwin, Bexley, and a Conway Stewart brand, does this mean they also manufacture all of these themselves now?

  • @ThePrince5623
    @ThePrince5623 Před 5 lety +1

    Why can’t celluloids be produced anymore? Most especially the arco brown?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Před 5 lety +2

      Well Zackarie it’s complicated, there are quite a few reasons why not, the major one is that the complete process is very dangerous - flamable and time consuming , with the new legislations it’s almost impossible. It takes maybe 3 - 5 years from start to finish and that in today’s times will bump the price so much that is not worth making it.
      As far as I know celluloid was mostly used by the makers of sunglasses and the pen makers where only buying small batches from them being that they are a much smaller and secondary makers that where using small amounts that could not cover the complete cost of a batch even in the past times, so the sun glasses manufacturers commissioned huge amounts of the material and pen makers where buying small amounts from them. Regarding arco brown I believe everyone that knew how to make that specific color and pattern is no longer between us and they didn’t passed the craft to other. Celluloids are produce anymore but not like in the old days , for example Montegrappa, they have a facility next to their factory where they produce celluloid , only for their pen models and it’s moved from the actual factory because it has caught fire for over 3 times in the history of montegrappa so they made a complete building and they had to move it separately of the production of pens because of the legislation requirements.
