Naming it The Philosophers Stone was not to be ‘extra’ it was an actual historical name from alchemist lore. It was Americans that changed it to Sorcerer to dumb it down and sound more ‘Disney’
And I’m pretty sure it’s only America that call it sorcerer. All books and movies everywhere else is Philosopher’s.
Philosophers Stone is not the "British version" of the book/movie. Sorcerer's Stone is the American version. They changed it to "Sorcerer's Stone" for the Americans because they thought they wouldn't understand.
I've never understood that. Americans know what a philosopher's stone is. And even if we didn't, we didn't know what fkn quidditch was and we just learned it from the book, we would have learned philosopher's stone, too.
Clearly it was the right decision, based on the reaction.
Justice for Benison not getting the point for “cult”
"What is the British version?" More like what is every other English version. They had to change it for the US release because they thought no one would know what a philosopher is
I thought the exact same hahha the rest of the world had it they way it was meant to be
Yep and thought Americans couldn't pronounce it either
I'm pretty sure anyone reading the book would have been able to figure it out.
Lol not them saying "oh the brits, why'd they gotta have a different title" when the british one is actually the original one for harry potter 😂
Nick - saying we’re ridiculous for calling it ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ when there are legit centuries of legend behind the philosophers stone and Sorcerer’s stone was only used for the US market because producers/distributors were concerned that Americans wouldn’t know what a philosopher is. 😂
Well, it is ridiculous that she changed the title to pander to us, instead of leaving it original.
Fun fact. It was called the Sorcerers Stone in America because British publishers thought Americans were stupid and didnt think that the book would sell over there because the title is too complicated
I came to the comments to say this 😂😂
Yeah literally every other English version is philosophers stone
"Why do they gotta be so ridiculous to Brits"
I was like "what? 😂"
13:27 Umm excuse us, The Philosopher’s Stone was actually the original title 🙈😅 (it’s a British book) so…why did the Americans have to be so awkward and change one word in the title??
Book publishers thought that Americans would be too stupid to figure out what a "philosopher's stone" was but if you were a "GenXer, like myself" then you would've heard it in your chemistry class. I have zero idea why they thought that kids couldn't figure it out given the context of the book and everything. Sometimes, it amazes me how little credit is given to kids and their ability to comprehend something, especially when it's given context around it.
truth, and besides, The Philosopher's Stone is a legend based in alchemic lore from CENTURIES ago. I mean...Dumbledore straight up talks about his friend NICHOLAS FLEMEL. (Any FMA fans should have already that connection.)
The fact that America couldn't grasp the word Philosopher and it had to be changed to Sorcerer is hilarious.
I was 13 in 1997, and went to see Titanic with my parents (I'm a huge history buff & was obsessed with Leo.) i remember leaving the cinema sobbing uncontrollably. I still believe there was enough room on the door for both Jack & Rose.
And Benison totally deserved a point for writing 'cult'
the weight of both of them on that door would've submerged them under water and they would've probably frozen to death. the space wasn't the issue, lol. sorry, just something i think about every time i see someone say there was enough room on that door for both of them.
@@-gohu- exactly. They even try and that showed it starts to submerge or even flip. So Jack chivalrously stayed hanging on the side
Lol The Philosophers' Stone is the OFFICIAL title. It was changed to Sorcerer's Stone for America because they thought no one would know what a Philosopher is.
They didn't think no one in America would know what a philosopher is. The word philosopher in America may have a different meaning than how it was meant in the title of the book, but that doesn't mean American's don't know what it means. They went with "sorcerer" simply because it has clearer magical connotations.
@@DEH1963 Multiple sources have said it’s because they wouldn’t know what a philosopher is.🤣
@@rachplays5656 What sources?
Jurassic Park came out in 1993. The Lost World came out in 1997.
Came here to say that
Oh yeah! Now it makes sense it wasn't first
She said jurassic park 2 when giving the answer
And Star wars came out in 1977 unless she uses the full title which she didn't.
@@nickelcapoccia2773 No, she said it like Jurassic Park is at number 2 on the list.
13:11 it’s literally a British book, written by a British author. Its name is Harry Potter and the philosophers stone. Not sorcerer’s stone huns xoxox
Americans' understanding of a philosopher is way different from the way the Brits use it. A child reading the series in the 90s in America wasn't going to get that a British philosopher was more like an alchemist or something. I'm guessing not that many Americans know even as adults. It made sense for us to change it to something we'd understand and read.
@@lawreb91 yes I know this, lol it’s just stupid how they say oh yeah brits changing everything…l the world doesn’t revolve around America. English comes from England not the USA
"Why do the British have to be so ridiculous?" Philosopher's Stone is THE title. American publishers changed it because they didn't think American kids knew what a Philosopher's Stone was. The Philosopher's Stone is a legend. The Sorceror's Stone is shit they made for American audiences of the book.
I like how she kept saying "Jacob Elordi!" even after people didn't know him... repeating his name won't change anything lol. PS: I have never heard of this guy either.
As a brit who met jk rowling before hp became a movie the original title is harry potter and the philosopher's stone it was only changed in the US as they thought americans wouldnt know what it was or how to pronounce it, so calling brits stupid for having a different title actually its you whose wrong as only in the US was it released as sorcerers stone. They also had to shoot scenes twice whenever they said philosopher's stone in order for it to be released in movie theaters in the US.
THANK YOU MARTINE! Hanson is NOT a one hit wonder. I love them sm 😂
Theyre still around
somehow i had remembered 2 of d 3 names
You should’ve given Benison cult for the cult leader LMAO it was close enough
Benison has to be the nicest guy in California
What people don't get about the Seinfeld ending (the very end, not the rest) is that they're ending on the same conversation between George and Jerry that they started with. Literally nothing has changed, they haven't grown at all, and they've learned nothing - and that's because they were nothing but self-serving garbage for the entire run of the show.. It literally could not have ended any other way and made sense. Were they supposed to do all that and then find love and happiness and success? Hell no. The cycle begins again.
Loved all the reactors pairings. Nick's laughter is so contagious.
That awkward moment when you realize you're older than Nicholas cause this video... i thought he was older
I thought he was younger. He's about a year older than me because I was in 6th grade in 1997.
Nick is 37 lol, he was joking 🙃 😂
Love how Nick calls the Brits ridiculous for having the original name of the book XD Majority of countries had it as the original title...America changed it to Sorcerer's stone XD "Rowling and her American editors decided to change the name to Sorcerer because it had a deeper magical presence and would not misinform U.S. audiences of Flamel's occupation."
And the philosopher's stone is an actual thing in alchemy, no idea why they'd change it
@@ericforsythcos they said Americans too stupid to know what a philosopher is or how to pronounce it
"Do you remember wondering?"
Ooof. I do.
People really didn't get the Seinfeld ending. I loved it because I knew the intention behind it:
1) It made sense for the characters, because for 9 seasons, they were the most callous, shallow, horrible people ever. So them going to jail when everybody they were unkind to came to testify against them is. just perfect.
2) Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld always said when the show ended they wanted to go out with a huge bomb, like the most anticlimatic ending ever. They even had a post credit scene with Jerry doing stand up in prison and getting booed off stage.
3) Finally, the genius of the episode was that it took all the theories fans were making about how it would end (And mind you, this was before social media, which is impressive) and they teased all of the major theories in the episode, while not fulfilling any of them.
It wasn't a good episode of Seinfeld, but it was the perfect ending for Seinfeld.
I guess it's because I was 17 and didn't really have any friends who watched Seinfeld, but I never realized it was so hated. I liked it when I saw it. I was never a fanatic or anything, just something silly to laugh at. I loved that they brought back all the people they'd ever interacted with to show just how horrible they really were. Their trial was my favorite part because of that.
Genuinely baffling that they go in on Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone being British pretentiousness when it’s written by a Brit & the films are as British as you can get. Maybe they should ask why they got a dumbed down title 🤔🤷♂️
AND it’s not the British version of the title! That’s literally the title around the world. Only the US had that title!
Yeah, and at least show us a clip from the international version where they say "Philosopher's stone" to make your point. The research in this episode was terrible on so many questions.
Literally sitting in my chair, yelling at the screen that the hilarity behind the final scene of Seinfeld is that it's the exact same as the opening scene of Seinfeld!!! That show is absolute GENIUS.
Just gonna put this out there: Nicholas looks like MJF from AEW...
And Benison dressed as Phineas.
Yesss!
@@RevanLockheart- Phineas from Phineas and Ferb?
@@antoniomarin9061 yes , Yes it is.
What is MJF from AEW? I genuinely don't know. Lol.
Nick: I was 1 in 1997
Also Nick: My favorite thing from 97 was being in Junior High
Me: 🤨
There was no right way to end Seinfeld, and Jerry knew that fact. The show wasn't about anything and had no actual storyline, so what closure was there to be done?
End it as randomly as every other story, but tie it off with a bow by tossing them in jail for the indifference they showed for 9 seasons lol.
I was expecting The Fifth Element to be mentioned, one of my favourite sci-fi comedy romance movies of all time
They're bringing it to theatres in November for 2 nights. It's odd they're doing it at 27 years. We went to see it in theatres for the 20th anniversary, but missed the 25th 2 years ago.
17:13 They should have clarified that it was The Lost World: Jurassic Park that released in 97, not the original. Also it was the special edition re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy.
Benny should have gotten a half point for the cult answer, he was on the nose about it being a cult related guy 😒 sometimes the mediators piss me off with the choosing of answers
Their answers for the Harry Potter book made me wince. Also, it's a *British* book and Sorcerer's Stone was the American title for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
I’m in Australia and only know it as The Philosopher’s Stone and Sorcerer’s stone seems weird to me ha ha!
Canadian here, we also had Philosopher’s Stone.
Yeah, because Americans don't know what a philosopher is. That's why the publisher thought the original title wouldn't sell.
Which is a real surprise seeing as how Americans love god and fear the devil, and a sorcerer is a lot closer to the latter...
@@stephaniegodin2167only the US changed it yet they say we're weird btw I'm British so how can you say we're weird when jk rowling who wrote it is weird. They had to film scenes twice that had the phrase in order to release it in the US
@@charlienerd I never said you were weird, so sorry? I am Canadian, it was both Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter a l’école des sorciers (for the French Canadians which translates to Harry Potter at wizard school). It was only referred to as the philosopher’s stone in the movies I watched (pierre philosophale). As for JK I am still so confused as to how she can create a character like Hermione but say what she said.
The actual title IS Philosopher’s Stone, only Americans call it Sorcerer’s Stone and they changed it because they thought Americans would be too dumb to know what a philosopher was 💀
They thought they didn't know what philosophy is?! 😕
I'm glad someone said it, I was a little miffed when they said, "the British version" like somehow Philosopher's Stone was the title after the change and not how it was released pretty much everywhere else that sold the title in English.
My fave thing bout 1997 was graduating high school and my nephew being born but it was a very sad year because my dad passed away that year
For everyone crying about Star Wars.... 1997 was the year the original trilogy from the 70s were rereleased as Special Editions.
Yep; I remember watching Return of the Jedi in theaters during Spring Break '97.
I'm glad I paged down. I was so confused why they would say this.
Only the very ending clip of Seinfeld was shown but the episode had them on trial in court. That allowed them to have witnesses called to the stand where the show was able to bring back many reoccurring and guest characters in the episode from throughout its entire history where the witnesses all corroborated that the main cast were terrible people. Also the very last dialogue from the last episode was also the very first dialogue from the very first episode.
The minute she sang not only "That don't impress me much" and "Blue" I knew both answers. I had a crush on LeAnn rimes as a teen
Benny should have gotten the point for the cult leader!
13:38 yeah, the movies are also called HP & the Philosopher's Stone. Do they dub over every time they say "philosopher's stone" in the USA release?
No the actors filmed the scenes twice once saying philosopher's stone and then again with sorcerers stone to enable the US release
For the bonus point for Harry Potter, I'm frickin' laughing my ass off at Martine's guess! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🫣🫣🫣 Harold Potterfield 🫣🫣🫣😂
I still have one of my Beanie Babies. They released a line based on the animals of the Chinese zodiac in 2000(?) and I got the horse as I was born in 1990 xoxo
the best part of 1997 was "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" season 2
Think I'll have to agree with this.
Also mention i know what u did last summer for 1997 peak
Best moment of 1997 was when Buffy started. Unfortunately I only realised that years later when I finally started watching.
I met AND married my wife in 1997.
Gotta love the irony of Nicks comment about philosophers stone, and the reason for it being changed 😂
Because it was easier for Americans to understand?
This 😂
This was a great episode
Best part of 1997, I got married….. and I still am! ♥️
My favourite 1997 moment is definitely the beginning of harry potter mania although i had no idea what it was til early 2001 when my teacher started reading harry potter and the philosophers stone (which is the original title not the British title it's that one in most countries not just the uk now someone correct me if I'm wrong but I heard it was American publishers who wanted the name changing, also Nicholas flamel was a real philosopher back in the 1600s I think can't be exact with the century lol) to us for 10 mins at the end of every friday as a treat and so far into the book i got interested and then read the first 3 books for myself within the next month i think i read the 4th at some point before the first film was released as well although that one took a while haha i was 9/10 at the time im now 33 and although too tired (with 6y and 4y old sons) to read i do listen to the audiobooks love movie reactions on yt and sometimes watch the movies with my babies (they cant concentrate for too long on a movie so its in bits haha) im still a huge fan, other than that i dont really remember 1997 i was 6yo lol
They're all wrong, Randy Marsh is the best character on South Park. Lol
you should of specified The Lost World : Jurassic Park cause just Jurassic Park sounds more like the first one just alone.
No one knows who that Jacob guy is.
Why does this channel keep trying to push him out there?
For me, before Google, it was encyclopedias and microfiches... I still distinctly remember looking at a bunch of microfiches to help write a book report back in the 90s...
My favorite thing in 1997 was a hockey game... "The Avalanche-Red Wings brawl"
One of the most iconic rivalries of the National Hockey League! All the Hall of Famers on both sides.
Jayse and I are literally the same age. I was a Freshman when the year started (and my brother was a Senior) I was never a big movie watcher, but there was some fun music that year that still holds up. I remember watching the Finale of Seinfeld, it would probably be my favorite show now, it's my kinda humor. Last time I watch it was actually in 2000, I was on a mission trip in Mexico, and it was the only show on in English. Should have mentioned 3rd Rock from the Sun as well, it made it's debut in '97, HILARIOUS show! I remember the Heaven's Gate cult as well, you could tell that guy was nuts by his eyes. '97, a classic year. Remember it so well.
Honestly, discovering Hanson was a huge moment for me. I saw them in my Seventeen (or maybe Teen People) magazine as an up and coming band to check out I finally saw their Mmmbop video on MTV and was hooked. I was finishing my 8th grade year and getting ready to be a high schooler. So many changes have gone on in my life but Hanson has remained a constant. I'm a big fan to this day!
We can't play along if ya don't keep up the stuff we need to put in order. Loved this. It was hard
It was The Philosophers Stone almost everywhere except the States
Because that's actually a thing in mythology, why do them Americans always have to be so silly. :p
Benison!! My husband literally said "Simon Cowell" for George Clooney as well!! 😂😂😂 You're not alone! 😂😂😂
harry potter was called the sorcerers stone in America because the publishers in America thought that philosopher's stone didn't sound exciting and magical enough to appeal to American kids, also they were concerned that kids wouldn't know what philosopher meant to the point they even shot the scenes in the movies twice using sorcerer's stone in one take and Philosopher's stone in the other just so American kids didn't get confused between the movie and the book.
A lot of streaming sites use the American title for movies so it can confuse people in the UK and Australia when the title is different to what they know/remember.
kind of funny as "The Philosopher's Stone" is supposed to be a legendary item from Alchemy that could essentially make something from nothing or turn lead to gold or make the elixir of life that made its drinker immortal, and it existed in fantasy and fiction stories long before Harry Potter was even a passing thought in J.K Rowling's head.
Graduating from high school.....in 1997....... and leaving to go to college.....I feel so old.....
You are not old, in 1997, I had been graduated from high school for 17 years.
I was only 1 in 97 too. I thought Nic was much older than me
For some reason I also thought he is slightly older than me 🤔.....but I was 9 in 97 😅
He was kidding. Later he says his favorite thing of 1997 was going to junior high.
Thanks for another fun video.
Season two of Buffy the vampire slayer. 🥰
The Angelus arc. 😘
"Why do they have to be so ridiculous, the Brits?" It's a British book, and the original title was philosopher...the Americans changed it
Star Wars was re-released in 1997, not released. And Jurassic Park 2 came out that year, not the first movie
Good classic throwback for 97 episodes these movies are timeless.
Favorite moment of '97 was Final Fantasy VII.
Same
👍 if you think that guy looks like Mel Brooks as Yogurt????
I thought he kind of looked like comedy legend actor Sid Caesar. I know way too much older stuff....
The series finale of Seinfeld aired in the spring of 1998. Weird question
I'm old enough for 1997 to be considered triva! 😂 thanks for making me feel old
I still have all my Teenie Beanies from when you had to go to 20 different McDonald's stores to get happy meals with ones you didn't have from the current set (there were 3 sets)
Fun Fact: The word Google is a numeral equation meaning a 1 with a million zeroes. The mathematician who discovered, while trying to come up with a name for it, asked his 3 year old what he thought of it and the child responded with, "Google" while pointing at the equation. And there you go.
Except it's spelled differently. It's actually spelled "googol".
As the biggest Hanson fan (YES STILL) I am glad they are getting some recognition on React. Should react to their music then vs now because its so different!
You know you’re a Fanson when she asked their names and my mind immediately went to their full names. 🤣

think they were just talking about them, didn't say that they specifically came out that year (but I'm sure they were super popular in '97)

This episode was fun!
I had _both_ LeAnne Rimes and Shania Twain cassette tapes that I’d play on my teeny tiny cassette player (with the world’s smallest speaker) in my room after school-then I got a cd player…and my mom got me _both_ NOW & NOW2 where I was introduced to “rap” music and haven’t been much of a country girl since! 🤣🤣 Ohhh, good times! That was back when my big sister _actually_ wanted to talk to me… before she got “too cool” for me. 🤣🤣
Also, Kalilah and I are the _same_ age!
Anyone who didn't like the final episode of Seinfeld was probably going to complain no matter what they did.
It brought back every great character from the shows run allowing you to relive all the highlights and the convo in the cell was perfect. The conversation Jerry is having with George is the exact same conversation they were having in the beginning of the first episode. I thought it was brilliant.
Hubby and I were first like. Ummm. What? How can it end that way?? Then, as we were talking about it. It was just 👩🍳😘. Perfect.
So happy to see Kittie & Kalilah in this video!! Everyone has been complaining about the addition of new reactors, but I love the different personalities
Same!
Uhm, it is a British book, and that is the name of the book. Philosopher's Stone is the original.
These are my favorite reactors and the new entries Kitty and Kalilah are so much fun
I was in elementary school when I saw south park. Kid you not, laughed for a week straight and had it entwined to my being. Too funny
Americans ridiculing the first HP book title when it's quite literally the original version. Yeah, that checks out. 🙄
Non-American picking out a ridicule remark made by one person in the video and attributing to all of America. Yeah that checks out.
My parents have an encyclopedia set that has east and west Germany in it
I was four in 1997, so I wasn't aware of most of this stuff at the time. But I still got most of these because 90s nostalgia is so strong.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was released in 1997. However, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was released in 1998.
I've met Taylor Hanson, twice. He's really down to earth and very nice.
Whenever I hear someone say "Does GenZ knows about this or that" or something in that way, I am always like gurl GenZ started in 1997 ofc we know that ... not all GenZ were born with a smartphone in theirs hands 😂😂😂
One of the biggest time capsule photos, to me, is the photo of a couple getting divorced and dividing their beanie baby collection in the courtroom as part of the settlement
The episode of Dark Side of the 90’s covers this craze very well and the lengths people went to get beanie babies thinking they would be valuable
