- On November 11, 1991, federal prosecutors announced that Sammy Gravano would later testify against john Gotti and other high-ranking mobsters in exchange for a reduced sentence. John Gotti received a sentence of life imprisonment. As part of Gravano's cooperation agreement, he would never be forced to testify against his former crew. On September 26, 1994, a federal judge sentenced Gravano to five years in prison. However, since Gravano had already served four years, the sentence amounted to less than one year.

Here’s the thing: I know Sammy is classified a “rat” because he talked and yes, he probably should’ve just taken his sentence and died in prison but in those days the first person to talk normally walked away free of charges. I believe Sammy was charged with 1 charge of RICO. Now with that being said, if Sammy wouldn’t have talked trust and believe that someone else would’ve. A lot of people were incriminated in that case and there is a 99.9% chance someone else would’ve snitched so they could get away scott free. After Sammy heard the recorded tapes of what John Gotti said about him, honestly I don’t blame Sammy for talking because John Gotti would’ve probably had Sammy killed in prison. Sammy’s best chance to survive is outside of prison. Remember this, Sammy killed 19 people and walked away from life in prison so he had a lot to say. He annihilated the Mafia by testifying.
