      On a side-note, can you do a full lesson on 22 Acacia Ave.?

    i love invaders, especially verse part, cant explain that, but the easy typical maiden chord progression and epic vocal melody sang amazingly by bruce. i was always sad that they didnt play it as an opener for tnotb tour. murders in a rue morgue was still an epic opener though

    Invaders: For me, despite of not being the best from the album is a good opener. Fast, violent but at the same time it shows how the band started to mature their lyrical content. It's their first song about an epic but destructive battle. A topic that IM repeats almost with every album. (The Trooper, Aces High, Alexander The Great; well, this one isn't totally about war but still has the essence)
    Children Of The Damned: One of my favorite power ballads. Bruce's vocals feels like they are injected with anger and sadness. The breakdown is one of my favorite parts from the album "Now it's burning his hands, He's turning to laugh..." And the bend harmony is great too. Also seems this is one of the favorites of Metallica. After the first arpeggio a guitar starts to play octaves, really similar what Metallica does in The Unforgiven II. And also the One tapping part is almost the same.
    The Prisoner: This one is my least favorite but it's amazing too. I don't know why but my least favorite songs are from The Prisoner series (Back In The Village). The prechorus is the best part! "Run, fight to breathe...". Also the dialogues from the serie are a nice detail.
    22 Acacia Avenue: If it wasn't for Hallowed Be Thy Name this one would be the best. Both solos are at least at my top 10, very catchy but creative at the same time. The Dave's one is wonderful, emotive. And the Adrian's one seems like it represents a discussion between the protagonist and Charlotte, and one of the part seems to have won with the resolution of the solo. Some fans don't like the lyrics, but for me it's one of their best. Not every song has to be epic and poetic to be great, like Rime of The Ancient Mariner. These lyrics are charged with agony and despair. Perfect.
    The Number Of The Beast: A classic, this is the reason why nowadays we call Iron Maiden "The Beast". Represents the main esence of Iron Maiden. Is THE SONG. And I'm never tired of the Bruce's scream.
    Run To The Hills: Every album has the popular and this isn't the exception. Easy chorus for the crowd to sing and feel. A short song with a slow begining but as soon as we keep listening the gallop starts. Also a classic one, the only problem is in live, even with Bruce in his prime (during 1982 tour) the chorus sounds strange. Idk, maybe it's just me
    Gangland: This is the black sheep even for the fans that listens to "underrated songs". I love this short but emotive song and it's really well placed. Just before Hallowed Be Thy Name and this helps the flow of the album. They did the same with SIT placing Deja Vu before Alexander and it works great. Clive Burr begins with his violent drum intro, the open distorted riff strikes and then Bruce starts singing really nice lyrics. The middle section is one of my favorites points from the album: "Once you were glad to be free for a while..." and I'm not being sarcastic.
    Total Eclipse: I don't have too much to say about this one. In comparison with Gangland this one is more agressive and has a better solo, but in the chorus by far I prefer Gangland. A shame it isn't in spotify tho.
    Hallowed Be Thy Name: I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about this. The best song of their career objectively talking. The Hammersmith 82 performance is one of the best of all the music. Bruce sounds even better than the album version.
    Final Conclusion: TNOTB is my 3rd favorite IM album. If the first has a classic sound, Killers is kind of punk, Piece of Mind tells myths, books, stories, Powerslave is the epic one and SiT has its unique 80ish style, TNOTB is the darkest one. The main topic is the domination from a stronger to a weaker. Every "character" suffers this but in different way (ones being invaded by a more powerful one, or being in the death row without anything to do to stop it). A masterpiece.
    1) Hallowed Be Thy Name (10)
    2) 22 Acacia Avenue (10)
    3) Children of The Damned (10)
    4) The Number of The Beast (9)
    5) Run To The Hills (9)
    6) Gangland (8,5)
    7) Invaders (8,5)
    8) Total Eclipse (8)
    9) The Prisoner (8)

    I remember this album coming out. I'd been a fanatical fan since 1980 so my friends and I were concerned about how Bruce's arrival would affect the band. We knew a new song would be released soon but didn't know exactly when, so every Friday night we listened to the Friday Rock Show on the radio, hoping to hear the song. One Friday, the show opened with a phenomenal song we'd never heard before. It was incredible! When it ended, I turned to my friends and said: 'I don't know if that's the new Maiden sound or not, but it's f**king good whoever it is!' Then it was announced as the new Iron Maiden single, 'Run to the Hills' and we knew this new lineup was very special. I bought the album the day it came out and I saw them live on that tour. That was a very special time in my life and that particular night is still etched very clearly on my mind. Not their best album in my opinion, even though I have the strongest emotional attachment to it, but it's certainly top three, only beaten by Seventh Son and Senjutsu.

    "22 Acacia Avenue" is my favorite Maiden track of all times. The progressive structure, the dark "east-end at night" atmosphere and Adrian's final masterpiece of a solo. Also the reality-based dramatic lyrics. Just one correction: i'm pretty sure that only the opening riff and the subsequent first two verses are written by Adrian (a variation from a previous Urchin composition), the rest of the song is Steve material.

    • @LicksOfTheBeast
      @LicksOfTheBeast  Před 2 lety +2

      That's the bulk of the song... Especially the verse riff 😄 The "bite her, excite her" part definitely sounds like a Harris part as does Dave's solo part (that turnaround is totally Steve), the chorus I'm not sure... 🤷🏻

      I really like two of the tracks that it seems others think are low points of the album. Gangland is da bomb! Such a moody tune, dig it so much! I’m also a huge fan of Invaders, so aggressive!
      Hallowed was my favorite song for many years (I’ve heard Nicko say this one is still his favorite). If you don’t rock out to the title track you don’t have a pulse! Every song on the album at some point was a favorite of mine, but put a gun to my head today and tell me to pick a favorite track I’ve gotta go with 22 Acacia Ave!! Riffs and grooves for days and days and years on that one!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘

    I remember as it was yesterday the first time I heard TNOTB, I got it for my 14th birthday from my best friend. I was really into rap music at that time and didn't know hevy metal existed. When my friends went home it was somwhere around 1 A.M. I went to bed, turned the lights off and inserted the CD in my stereo, listened first 4 songs and then The Number of The Beast came and that spoken word intro. Now imagine a kid who watched too much horror movies for his age listening to this in the pitch dark. I was scared to death and then that famous scream from Bruce, now that was an experience and I was scared up until that Adrian's solo and it was the most awesome thing I heard in my whole life. This album changed my life forever and I remember every day coming from school and listening to this album over and over on repeat for three months until I got other Maiden albums and completely falling in love with Maiden and metal music. So here it is, the story about me and the most important album in my life.

    I would recommend Dream Theater's version of the entire album, it's called Dream Theater: The Number Of the Beast
    I've got a story as well: I was about 13 years old, had a copy of the audio cassette of the album. During a family meeting playing with the orher kids I had an idea of playing some "disco" music for them. Back then I thought Iron Maiden is disco.
    So I did, but when I saw it's not for everyone, I stopped the tape, and wondered why the other kids didn't like it as much as I did, some of them didn't like it at all. Now as a 48 year old, I'm still into 80's metal just like my 13 year old self, who thought Maiden is disco.

    Lovely tribute, Nico! Congratulations! There’s a record that holds a special place in my heart! Takes me back to elementary school! I already knew the band by their first two albums. Oddly enough, I had my vinyl copy of Killers and a cassette version of Iron Maiden. I had to ask one of my school friends to lend me his NOTB copy, which he reluctantly did! I payed dearly for that! He asked me in return for my Hemispheres vinyl! Since those days, I felt it was an amazing record, although Invaders and Gangland sounded like they could have been on the Killers album, and I love Killers. They are great songs, but I can clearly hear the difference in direction of the other Tracks. It’s just a matter of keeping the flow. Since Total Eclipse probably didn’t fit due to vinyl time restraints; to me it’s awesome to finally see that excellent song included on the disc. Widens the range and adds to the variety of this astounding work of art! Keep it up, Nico!

    Nico, great job again. This may have been your most impactful video yet. You not only captured what made this album so significant but also what makes Maiden who they are. I was 12 when NOTB came out and really got into Maiden in '84 with Powerslave. This is when I picked up the guitar. What a great period to start. Even after almost 40 years of playing I still LOVE getting hung up on little idiosyncrasies of Dave and, especially, Adrian's work. Thanks for all you do. Your channel matters. It provides a valuable distillation of Iron Maiden as a band and not only the guitar playing. Thanks for reminding me why I'm so passionate about Maiden.

    "Gangland" is a real class act. It's a song that never gets old, no matter how many times I listen to it. The guitar work, too, is classy, serious metal. It's not a song that was written to be a hit, but that is, precisely, why it is so good. It's heavy metal for the sake of heavy metal. "Total Eclipse" uses F- and G- major in the intro and outro and has that slow, psychedelic section in the middle, which at first listen sound a bit too happy and not quite Maiden. Maybe that is why the band and management decided to omit it from the original release of the album.

    • @rabarebra
      @rabarebra Před 2 lety

      No, No, No, and No, just No.
      Total Eclipse doesn't sound happy. If you have any skills of music theory you should know this. F and G major or whatever major doesn't make it happy sounding. It depends on the root note of the bass being played, or other instruments interaction with those chord.

    • @metalinsights9664
      @metalinsights9664 Před 2 lety

      @@rabarebra I have four years of formal music theory study under my belt. The F and G chords in "Total Eclipse" are played as arpeggiated bar chords, which is how they are typically played on the acoustic guitar, but on the electric, that detail lends the song intro a vibe that doesn't sound quite right for Maiden and doesn't fit well with the rest of the songs on The Number of the Beast.
