    I'm a wood worker and Poplar is a very common lower end hardwood. It's a very nice and cost effective wood to replace pine with. Pine is a softwood and what a standard 2x4 is made of. Poplar is also on the softer side of hardwoods so while being resilient it will probably give you warmer tones vs something like Maple or Birch shells.

    Before watching this video... Who had already heard of "Poplar" ?! xD

    • @joshwantsmaccas
      @joshwantsmaccas Před 4 lety +3

      yeah my first ddrum kit had poplar shells. apparently more a guitar wood but is an affordable wood with Soft highs and mids, and boosted low-end warmth. from my experience in studio and stage with that kit it can be made to sound good, like really good but its no replacement for high-end wood haha.

    The best way of tuning a snare with my experience is 2 drum keys on each side

    Poplar was commonly used in a LOT of classic vintage 70's and 80's kits. Usually it was used in combination with maple.

    I have a Woodworks 14" 6.5 walnut Wrap, if you put on new heads and tune it right, every snare could sing, and for my low budget, that snare is a very good choice

    Great tuning makes a good snare.
    I’ve heard $100 (or less) snares sound good, and Craviotto’s sound bad.
    You are paying the quality built into the snare

  • @Rockin_Ross
    @Rockin_Ross Před 4 lety +1

    I like deep snares, but that one still sounded “tubby”. Needed the batter cranked up a bit to even out the depth.
    Poplar is pretty soft and I’ll usually teak oil the inside to give it some body and luster.
    Personally, I’d have left the original heads on and just went for broke on the tuning. Once they’re worn out, then buy new shit.

    Wyatt what snare would you recommend when your on a budget? Im looking at 2 on SweetWater. One is the Sjc for $179 and the Ddrum red&black. What do you think?

    • @nasku2506
      @nasku2506 Před 4 lety +1

      Id recommend you Joey Jordison signature snare. Its around 200-250$ it isnt in your price range but its extremely worth it if you find one. Or you can just buy the one without the signature. Its i believe cheaper.

    • @maritekpl
      @maritekpl Před 4 lety

      well you could get a real snare and just make it quieter ( with Black Hole mesh head for example) because I live in an apartment and I can't stand electric drums so I still play acoustics but quieter!

    Duude rlly? You put 2 moongels on a brand new head and you expect to get a good sound from a snare? Wow! Just let the drum breathe... And the tuning is super bad anyway...Also in most of the cases the sound comes from the hand ;)

    • @drummonkeystuffuk1875
      @drummonkeystuffuk1875 Před 4 lety

      some snares have a lot more ring - like the jj for example so 1 moonjel works wonders.

    • @flaviushosu7564
      @flaviushosu7564 Před 4 lety

      You want to hear a natural snare sound,with nothing on the head,look at all the snare reviews made on yt from big drum stores...no one puts moongel because they want to show us the most natural sound you can get from that snare by showing low to high tuning ;)
