Main takeaways:
-List the education at the top
-minimize whitespace (margin, spacing, indent), maximize font size
-describe business impacts of projects and experiences
-don't list irrelevant experiences
-just use microsoft word instead of latex
-don't use 2-column format
-bold the company name instead of the job title
-don't list anything you don't know (don't lie about your skills)
-list the technologies used in a single line instead on every line
-Emphasize and elaborate on the section you consider more important (experience/projects)
Thanks brother
This actually helped me a LOT, thanks for taking your time to share and explain this so well!
Great video! Really appreciated what you shared. Also, great work. You're experiences were signficant, and allowed you to craft a good resume. The polishing of resume is admittedly important, but not nearly as important as actually having done some work and projects which are worth the attention of tech companies. Congrats!
I love how candid you are and your sense of humour! Definitely subbing for all the future videos to help advance my own career!
Thanks for the support, Tan!
@@ccriztoff so you were looking at his nose all the time?

@@ccriztoff tbh he has a better one than you 😂
This was actually reeeeeaaaally helpful! Thank you for this. ☺️
Great video, loved the business Impact addition, that made a lot of sense.
Loved the honesty and the template evolution! Subbed and would be checking out more of your videos
your first resume looks good and the fact that you did a lot of projects is a major plus! I wish I did that
Thanks fir the video! You explained it in a really clear manner.
Love the Template, thanks!
Thanks for the video Chris!
More opps to get grilled is the dream. This way at least I have interviews to practice and learn from. Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it. My old resume would be a joke to you if you saw it!
wow your channel has blown up. Last time I was here you didn’t have up to 100 subscribers. well done chris!
Seeing ur resume progression was nice, I’ve been putting mine off foreverrrr
Thanks for the resume sharing bro !!
Thanks for sharing your experiences and your resume template!
Chris your tips are really awesome. You should make more software engineering videos.
Great tips, thank you! Your video is entertaining to watch.
Thanks Cyrus!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! You inspire me to become like you!!!
Damn dude, thanks for sharing! Good job
No problem, Bex!
Helpful, thank you so much for attaching the template
Thanks man, very helpful for a new grad!
Wow, this is actually really useful advice. Would've been really useful to have something like this when I was in college
I’m glad it helps you Huzaifa!
Thanks a lot for the tips! Just got yourself a new subscriber :)
Thanks a lot Jereld!
Very useful video. Thanks mate! :)
Come on guy, you got your job because you deserved it and you were in the right place in the right time. Obviously a good resume helps. Good luck and success for you.
I appreciate this video Chris
no problem!
Thanks for the great tips bro.
Thank for this Chris !!!!!!!!!!!! God bless you
Thank you soooo much for the template!
Omg I've been through the same situation and my first two resumes look almost identical to yours! Glad I came across this video before creating my third resume ✌🏻
Ayyy
Who knows after the 4 th resume you can also get sde role in google😂
@@shivamsingh-or9jz no way I'll ever get into Google lol but I appreciate your thought 😁
this man has come to an understanding of the inner workings of the recruiter mind
Awesome. I need to make a good resume to get a job. I saw that some of the resumes that you show have personal info, please be safe. Thanks. I will definitely make my resume similar to this.
Great video thanks for sharing!

Excellent!
Hi Chris, thanks a ton for sharing this video. Cheers! (:
I liked the fact that you take alot about "The business value". I liked it. 👍
Great tips! thanks

Thank youuuuuuuuuuu for the resume template. 😇
Thank you so much. This is really very helpful.
Thanks Chris! 🙂
Thank you for sharing tips.
Thanks a lot you helped me a ton; I’m starting with Amazon February 14th
Really good advice man!! Thank you for the video!
Thanks Andrew!
Thank you sooo much. You helped me a lot. For people who have no experience, like me, its always painful to write the resume. I was facing problems to write the "experience" session on my resume and you make opened my mind. Thank you! (:
Hello Luísa, I'm in a similar situation as you, such tiny experience, that experience has nothing to do with coding and writing cashier seems just as bad as writing nothing. :( Can I ask how did you solve this problem, what made you feel less painful in this situation? :o
@@kovacshajni94 Hi! In the experience tab, I put the projects that I've been developing during my study, since I have no professional experience. However, I still haven't got a job opportunity to get my first real experience. ://
thank you for sharing, it was very helpful.
Thanks for the video! I’m also a cs student at UW!!
Cool! Thanks for the support Maryam!
For experienced candidate, one more tip, push education section below experience. Because it grows less and less relevant as expreance grows. Unless you are a ivy league passout.
9-5 mentality 💪🏻 Good luck plugging inside the system
Thanks. I am having some trouble with listing big projects that were a part of my work, so 10:40 is helpful.
thank's for your understanding on software engineering Resume
Thanks for sharing!!!
Great info! New Sub!
thank you so much. personally didnt realize the impact was important. always just ignored it
Very helpful!!!
Thanks for actually sharing the template and congratulations! I see a grammar mistake in the template: "Created a data pipelines in Python to backfill bond price data in database" -either "pipelines" should not be plural or remove "a" if you made multiple pipelines.
good catch mate!
Format definitely improved. Made-up statistics are problematic. I agree with other comments: Waterloo was the most important feature and consistent experience helped.
It's not your Resume that get you a job at Google, it's the work experience and internships that made you worth hiring.
Which is displayed on your Resume….

The mindset that front line retail and food service employees don’t build valuable skills to software development is arrogant. What do you think they use to do their job??? They have a major advantage as people who are well versed in business and customer facing software products. Usually a minimum of 3 subscription based software services are utilized to get one cup of coffee to a customer. 🤷🏻♀️ having the hands-on experience in the industry is invaluable while developing new product
I watched the entire video, and it was probably one of the best videos I saw for advice for a Software Engineering resume. As a current Queen's University Computer Engineering student, I want to be an aspiring engineer. However, I have 0 real-world experience working as a software intern. Especially being at Queen's I spent an entire year doing general engineering right now and am just about to enter Computer Engineering in September. I saw some of my friends in Waterloo, and they have their first internship and are pretty much like about a year ahead of me lol. I applied to a dev team role in my university but got rejected, possibly due to anxiety and nervousness. I had this spark of fire in my heart, I felt like I was useless. So I have been spending the past 2-3 months studying web development. I currently have learned HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, have an idea of user interface and am currently learning JavaScript. I am also learning C/C++ and forcibly Matlab 😅 thru my compulsory summer uni intro to programming course lol. I look forward to watching more of your videos in the future. Sorry for the paragraph lmao.
glad you enjoyed it
Thanx for helping a lot
By far the most informative video to re-create my resume. 8xxx views aren't enough..Thanks so much.
Thanks for the support Jason!
Hey, Chris, so all in all how many certifications do you possess as of 2022 that you think is relevant/usable and current. BTW, very good video, thank you!
As a graphic designer I think the one thing that is very wrong with your suggestions is the idea to get rid of the white space. Cramming you page with bigger text and no white space is bad for the reader. You need some indentation with your bullets and space between lines to help your eye move along and parse the information. If you cram things together it will be harder to read.
I think what he is referring to is that recruiters want to see dense blocks of text as that looks like a lot of information so to show that the applicant has many qualifications. Too much white space and while the page looks pretty the person seeing it will subconsciously think that there isn't much.
If the goal is to get hired and moved along the process ugly but effective choices are smart.
Exactly, such resumes are such a mess to read 😅
A recruiter is not reading it, an ATS will. The recruiter just calls him after an AI chooses him.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR PREVIOUS AND LATEST RESUME AND ALSO SHARING THE TEMPLATE!😊 IT REALLY HELPS! HOPE I WILL GET TONS OF INTERVIEWS AFTER USING YOUR RESUME TEMPLATE. WISH ME LUCK😇
your honesty is hilarious.
Thank you !
no problem
Not only did I "like" the video, I am a subscriber now. Thank you for your tips, I will let you know what happens?
Thank you for sharing the template, I like it! May I ask will the color difference on F and L name make people confused? Or can you please share the advantages of doing this?
wow it looks simple and smart I was doing lots of work on mine
Actually totally agree with you bro 😅😅
Education is important if it's your first role. Else, I would suggest having it after experience.
thank you tenz
Very useful.
Can you please share which template you used and in general , templates that SW intern can use/benefit off of
High quality video, thanks a lot for this. As a frosh at UW CS it was specifically informative (and definitely stealing the template). Any more specific reasons why you choose to keep the university at the top? I noticed that even though you have some more 'high profile' internships (Google, Bloomberg), you still maintain the decision to keep uw after skills.
uWaterloo is a target school for employers LOL

Similar resume got me interviews there as well. Failled the technical interviews tho :(
I need a resume for the google scholarship application and this is the first time I am making one...just dunno what to do really
thanks bro
How hard would it be to get interviews at Google, FB, etc. if you didn’t attend a target school like the University of Waterloo?
Can you make a video on how to apply for Internships/FTE??
There are few things that I would agree and disagree.
Disagree:
1) I don't need to remove indentations in order to write more. If you cannot write in super summary, you don't know what you have been doing.
2) I don't need to list my interest in order for the Resume algorithm to pick up the keywords. I shrink them into font 2 and turn them into border line. That way, my keywords will get picked up base on the number of times it has been mentioned.
3) 2 columns presentation are not necessary, but a mixture of graph/chart will make it easier to digest.
4) Interest, are meant for something which is NOT WORK RELATED. It tells the interviewer/reader that you are a human that has more than just work WORK and more work. E.g, you are picking up violin classes currently, and you had this inclination as a kid that you could play the songs that you love. One liner of interest is more than enough though, no one is that interested in our own lives, they just want to see some colors.
Agree:
1) No one cares about Cirriculum, if i ever sees one, I knew that guy is a newbie without experience. Space is precious no doubt, don't waste it on useless stuff.
2) If I am from a great school, yes I will list it on the top. However, there are only a handful that is considered great. I would list education on a timeline chart at the bottom or 2nd page. Resume is preferably 1 page, but that is a guide line, no one gets hurt with a 2nd page.
3) IMPACT, IMPACT, IMPACT. The impact is VERY VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT. List out what we do shows we do our job. Impact shows our importance. E.g, self-initiative developed a macro that reduces 15 min of processing time per day. Estimated labor hour saved per month per pax = 5 hours
It's not the resume. It's where he studied. the university of waterloo.
Don't be fooled people.
I'm interviewing at google right now and I hope I get an offer just so I can make a video showing my absolute dogshit resume.
You saved my resume from being complete garbage, thanks man!
hey Chris, this is a random question, but did you write cover letters for the jobs you applied to on co-op? im asking because it's 50 application each round, so does it make sense to write that many letters? thank you so much in advance!
It really depends on where you live
Chris, can you please provide a template for your 2nd resume (the laytech or laitech one?) (dunno how to spell it)
Thank you
Alan Turing would be proud.
Did you have a portfolio to go along with your projects or did you just have the code repository?
I pretty much just had a link to my github account.
Thanks for everything bro, but the temple isn't working for some reason..😅
Does it make a difference if you are "self-educated"?
Honestly, it's like recruiters don't even actually look at resumes. I hear they actually have bots literally just scanning and throwing resumes away even if you are qualified.
9:37, the right one
