    Thosand Year Old Vampire is amazing, and the book is a beautiful artifact in itself. And yes, I paid as much for shipping to Poland as I did for the book itself. Worth it though!
    I played a game of it on New Year's Eve in the middle of the early pandemic and it was an amazing experience.
    I recommend using index cards or post-it notes for memories. It was a tactile and easy to organize way of tracking which memories were lost, which were recorded in the journal, and which were vivid in my character's mind.
    I also love that the game tells you to literally go read wikipedia or something if you're not sure what was actually happening in the world at a certain period of time. So I would stop occasionally, google for a bit and go hey, that's around the time when the Tatars besieged Cracow! What if I was around for that?

    I really enjoy listening to you guys! I see that Stev has gone into much more traditional games, while Matt is stepping into the world of the indies. In fact, when Matt started raving about the solutions in The Between, I thought "welcome to the world of story games, this is just the beginning" :)
    Plus, I'm surprised by how in sync we are - you mentioned 3 games that I'm currently playing:
    1. I started watching this today during lunch, just before running a session of The Between (I think it's our 20-something session already)
    2. I finished watching this by dinner after the session and I'm just about to continue with my 1k Old Vampire story.
    3. And tomorrow evening, I'm running our 30-something session of the Trophy Gold campaign

      @@thebadspot I would be very happy to see you tackle Captain's Log, partly because it would help me decide if I should play it, or simply use it as a sourcebook combined with another system like Fate Core. I actually think Fate Accelerated might be a good fit. The rules in CL are a bit underwhelming from what I have read thus far.

    Slayers sounds as if it is heavily influenced by Savage Worlds. You essentially described the combat system for Slayer and everything you described is in Savage Worlds. Exploding dice, 4+, and different dice depending on your skill level.

    • @thebadspot
      @thebadspot  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah, I’ve got SW and it is markedly different. I think most of those things are in other TTRPGs. It’s the implementation that I’m into in particular. The exploding dice is just for one class, the Blade. I’m really excited about getting it on the table, but I’ve only ever read SW and that was only to play Deadlands.

  • @shaneintheuk2026
    @shaneintheuk2026 Před 6 měsíci +3

    Traveller doesn’t have a solo system but Zozer Games publishes Hostile Solo which is transferable. In it Paul Elliot has some fantastic mechanics for inter party interaction to create tension. He also does something unique in soloing by resolving scenes using “fortune in the middle”. Even if you don’t play it I highly recommend it as a different way to solo.

    • @thebadspot
      @thebadspot  Před 6 měsíci +1

      We did actually mention that, but it got cut for time as this was nearly 1hr45! I can’t wait to see what Steve does with it.

    • @errantadventurespod
      @errantadventurespod Před 6 měsíci +1

      I enjoyed reading through Hostile Solo, but I felt like the method for resolving things with one roll, while useful for solo, didn't represent the way I enjoy playing solo. I want to roll lots! Not sure why since my dice hate me, but that's part of the fun!

      My friend played Electric Bastionland recently and loved it, I'd be excited to try either it, or Mythic Bastionland.
      And I'm also interested in MCDM RPG. One of my D&D groups would be a great fit for it, they enjoy tactical combat a lot and this would be fun to run for them.

  • @veiledspace
    @veiledspace Před 6 měsíci +3

    Ooooh very interesting ideas. Thanks! Suddenly I want to make videos on those too hahaha. I'm very curious about Dead Belt. I'll check it out.
    The the assymetric classes in Slayers picked my game designer interest. Trophy also sounds interesting. I like those games that are very focused on a specific experience.
    I also just recently bough Traveller and did a very short one-shot solo to try it out and was very positively surprised by the result. I'm seriously considering doing a video campaign on it.

    • @errantadventurespod
      @errantadventurespod Před 6 měsíci +1

      That's great to hear! I've been very pleased at how smoothly Traveler runs solo so far. If we do a follow up at the end of the year, I'll compare and contrast solo vs group play.

      @thebadspot BTW, I was listening to the video while preparing for a Mothership RPG solo game. Not sure if you guys heard about this one, but it's a horror game based in movies like Aliens and Event Horizon. Not solo by default, and the official edition is still to come out, but there is quite a strong community churning out content and rules. For now, I'm using Starforged's oracles to create the location. Let's see how it goes 😉

    • @dziooooo
      @dziooooo Před 6 měsíci +3

      Dead Belt is GREAT! I played the ashcan release and enjoyed it a lot. One criticism I had was that there was very little to do between runs to explore the derelicts and no real guidance on what to do to build the world beyond these missions. I don't know if they added any support for that part of the game in the full release, but if not, I'd probably supplement it with Starforged.
      Also, it may be possible to set up a macro in roll20 to create card layouts and flip them one by one? I'm not an expert, but I've seen people using card decks and macros on roll20.

    Also by the Gauntlet is Public Access, which is also drawing from Brindlewood Bay, that is a horror game inspired by CZcams horror. It has a similar mechanic to the Un-scene in the Between in that the players essentially improvise a short analog horror video whenever they discover and play one of the game's "tapes" that are the key to its myth arc.

    • @thebadspot
      @thebadspot  Před 6 měsíci

      I have that too! I think I’m drawn more to the Victorian era setting, but I’ll get round to Public Access at sone point I am sure. Thanks for watching!

  • @Grodnark
    @Grodnark Před 6 měsíci +1

    Did the same thing with The Between, though I was leaning towards it because it’s actually incredibly similar to Brindlewood Bay but didn’t think I’d be able to get my gaming group to get interested in playing older women. They’re more into fantasy, combat-heavy stuff and not so much narrative stuff.

    • @thebadspot
      @thebadspot  Před 6 měsíci

      It’s always tough teasing people away from what they know and are comfortable playing. I find it pretty exciting! Thanks so much for watching!

    Critical Role's Darrington Press is also working on a fantasy system, similar to D&D and suitable for long campaigns. It's called Daggerheart, I don't think the release date is announced yet, but they are running playtests right now.
    (BTW, when I was looking for the info on the release date, I found an absolutely brain dead manufactured drama article about CR "stealing from WotC" because they are "abandonning D&D" and holy hell, some people need to log off and never touch internet again)

    • @thebadspot
      @thebadspot  Před 6 měsíci

      We did talk about Daggerheart in the first take of this episode that was lost in the ether, but couldn’t find a release date like you say so thought not to include it. Interesting time for 5e adjacent games.

    • @dziooooo
      @dziooooo Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@thebadspot yeah, Daggerheart and the MCDM RPG are the ones I'm interested in. The Black Flag project (Tales of the Valiant from Kobold Press) turned out to be a disappointment, I think. It looks like D&D with serial numbers filed off because they wanted to ensure compatibility with their library of 5e products. And it was definitely rushed to release, I've seen examples of poorly worded rules and errors that proper testing and a competent editing team should have caught.

      I would also check your local game store. Mine has a decent selection of weird indie TTRPGs and they are happy to order something new if you suggest a game they can reasonably expect to sell 5-10 copies of. You're saving on shipping that way, so it's still worth it even with the store's profit margin added to the price.
