    I’m currently considering getting peacocks myself although I probably can’t let them free range due to both two and four legged predators. A local atv trail passes through my farm and closing it would cause problems with the community. I’ll be building a couple large bird runs for peafowl and/or golden pheasants. Depending on how the local reception goes, I may allow some peafowl to free range.

    Someone found a list white peacock...I helped to try to catch but dark, windy and freezing. We sat on blankets w a mating call loop. I climbed tree, grabbed one leg but flew to ground....
    SO..left cage covered w 2 blankets and tarp.
    Left sunflower seed, peanuts, apple, trail mix, cat pate and cat dry pellets. Will try again tomorrow. Temps dropping to 25 F degree. How low of a temp can they healthily tolerate?The whole town is worried.

    • @HappyTailsAnimals
      @HappyTailsAnimals  Před rokem

      It's winter, a mating call won't have any interest to them. If you grab a leg, don't let go. They will go limp if you can get them upside down. But with food it should be ok in that temperature. Corn is a good option when it's cold.

    You mentioned in the beginning being worried about one of the peachicks because his wings were droopy. Since their wing feathers grow so quickly as chicks, sometimes their muscles haven't yet caught up so they will hold their wings down from all the weight. I have some hand raised peacocks as well. :)

  • @Ashley.falcon
    @Ashley.falcon Před 3 lety

    They are not the largest flying bird, wandering albatross are absolutely massive and some of the eagles are also especially large. Many birds are larger. The wing span of the wandering albatross is also wider than a peafowl with its train is long if you want to include their feathers in the side.

    Ty for this video. I read an article online that peafowl are only as bright as a turkey is. Thank you for clearing that up. And I am a a new peafowl owner I have a male and two females. 7 weeks old. I was looking for guidance on taming them. Ty for this information. I was also told by someone on Facebook that you shouldn't tame because they will become aggressive. But you seem to clear that up too. And I also was wanting to know if they would run away and not return home too. Ty for that information as well.

    Your peacocks are lovely! I’m wondering if you have any tips for keeping females around? We have had trouble keeping specifically the females from disappearing . I’m thinking that they may be going to find better nesting areas and being attacked by something. Do you have any tips for providing better nesting places? Or just keeping them safe without penning them in completely. The few times we did have chicks born we had to keep the females in so they would nest inside

    Can chicks be raised without their mother. My friend had 5 eggs and put them under a hen to hatch but after all 5 died whilst growing up.i think it was the crest growing from the forehead they don't grow out because I've heard only the mother can pluck them and the hen doesn't know this. Can u give me some advice

    • @HappyTailsAnimals
      @HappyTailsAnimals  Před 4 lety +1

      That's the first time I've heard that! Chickens can definitely raise peafowl up to a certain age. But chickens usually only care for chicks for up to 8 weeks before weaning them. Peafowl care for their young for 10 to 12 months. So once the chicken feels the peachicks are big enough to wean, they will still need heat and some nurturing provided. But this has absolutely nothing to do with feathers.

      Sounds like a wonderful place for peafowl. They will not stay on 4 acres so your neighbors would have to be ok with having peafowl, many people do like them. You need to keep them in a pen for 1 year, longer if they are babies, and then you can let them be free range.
