The best ever rider for Newcastle Diamonds. For me the greatest rider of all, ever. I was 14 or 15 the first time I went to Brough Park and the team was: Brian Craven and Mike Watkin; Bob Duckworth and Peter Kelly; Ivan Mauger and Ivan Crozier; Russ Dent. That may have been his first appearance for Newcastle, and we worshipped him. I remember Brian Brett from Swindon Robins being drafted in when Ivan had meningitis, and Ivan winning his first race back after an illness that could have ended his career. And later being joined by Ole Olsen, so we had far and away the two best riders in the league. Happy days, great memories. Thank you, Ivan.

Those were fantastic days at Newcastle. You just knew there was something very special about Ivan and some of his battles against other top class Number 1's were unbeatable in terms of excitement - Ivor Brown, Charlie Monk were classics!

LEGEND ... I remember meeting Ivan in Sheffield in the 70's Ivan riding for Exeter and Hull asked him for an autograph and Ivan automatically said yes... i still have the autograph along side Ole Olsen, Peter Collins, Bruce Penhall, to name a few. Such an exciting rider to watch... you knew if Ivan was riding the other riders were in for a difficult meeting. Thank you for some fantastic memories at the Owlerton Stadium Track in Sheffield UK..

First came Ronnie Moore...then Barry Briggs and Ivan Mauger completed the trio of great New Zealand World Speedway Champions. Geoff Mardon although never an individual champion was also a top racer. All at one time rode at Wimbledon Speedway in South London.

I first went to Wimbledon Speedway taken by my Dad to I think the first post war meeting there and I followed the sport ever since. I remember Ronnie Moore always immaculate with a silk scarf fluttering in the wind and there were none better. Promoter Ronnie Green brought Ronnie over from Australia followed by Barry Briggs and then Ivan Mauger. That was the Golden Age and I attended the World Final in the early fifties won by Jack Young (his second successive final win). The Champion was decided in those days on one night following early qualifying rounds and because you knew it would be decided on that night the atmosphere was electric and was one of the great sporting experiences of my life. They are regrettably all dead now but I’ll never forget the enjoyment they gave us. Apart from Ronnie, the greats included Jack Young, Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs, Ove Fundin, Jack and Norman Parker and one not many will remember Ernie Rocco from the USA who tragically died at West Ham in 1952 whilst riding for Wimbledon who would’ve been one of the greats. A wonderful sport which gave me so much pleasure over many years and still does.
