    Ellie's "I'm sorry" is especially heartbreaking when you think back to after Tess died, Ellie specifically said she wasn't going to say sorry for something she wasn't responsible for. So, in this case Ellie felt responsible for Sam and failed to save him, the way Joel carries the burden of feeling like he failed his daughter and Tess.

    • @EsperUltima
      @EsperUltima Před 10 měsíci +12

      I feel that that sorry has multiple meanings too. "I'm sorry my blood doesn't work", " I'm sorry I couldn't save you", "I'm sorry I fell asleep when I promised to stay awake", survival's guilt.

      Yep, there are quite a few of the VA/mocap from the game in the show. You'll see Ellie and Joel's VAs later. And the VA for Marlene is the actress who played Marlene in the show as well. The sad part is Tess's VA from the games Annie Wersching passed away from cancer on the day episode 3 was released, just a week after her character passed away in the show.

    Thank you for instantly recognising that Henry was in shock at the end! Smh the amount of reactors I've seen turn on him the moment he points the gun at Joel. Idk like he literally just shot his brother, I thought it'd be obvious but most reactors were getting mad at him.

      This demonstrates one of the reasons I was glad Sofie's watching this show. She always seems to pick up on emotional cues and subtext that others miss. Makes her reactions much more enjoyable to watch than most.

      I feel like so many people fall for the "anything my team does is right" paradigm that the show is actively critiquing that they only manage to understand "Joel good." Frustrating, but kinda makes the show's point for it.

    • @EsperUltima
      @EsperUltima Před 10 měsíci +6

      Yeah, imagine when you are waken up so sudden and you have to make decisions, it's like when you're taking a nap and someone wakes you up and asks you questions, you would just answered instinctively without thinking. Here Henry instinctively tried to protect his brother then also instinctively tried to protect Ellie, he didn't have time to process what was going on, then it hit him. Sofie is an empath, it's not a personality trait that is very common, so it's understandable that many reactors don't catch a lot of things (in terms of psychological) in the show.

    • @cherryfreckle
      @cherryfreckle Před 10 měsíci +4

      @@adamwells9352 oh 100%! Had it been the other way round with Henry and Sam being the main characters and we had only just met Joel and Ellie, most people would no doubt recognize he was in shock and not even care he was pointing his gun at Joel. Annoyingly most people will view situations with an already biased opinion.

    • @cherryfreckle
      @cherryfreckle Před 10 měsíci +3

      @@EsperUltima Exactly! Henry's main priority is his brother. And as well as agreeing with you about Sofie, I think it's also just a case of the audience being very biased towards Joel (like the other commenter basically said too). Because even if you were to ignore the fact that Henry was moving on instinct or was in shock, people forget that Henry and Sam literally only just met Joel and Ellie like a day ago. This isn't a situation where a character is suddenly pointing a gun at his best friend since childhood lol

  • @arthurcamargo8416
    @arthurcamargo8416 Před 10 měsíci +5

    This episode shadows Bill and Frank in that while Frank was Bill's "purpose" Sam was Henry's purpose. Each ended up killing the other out of love and compassion, and each killed their purpose. So they each took their own lives too. It too, was another hard episode, but we did get to see Joel growing a little bit in his understanding that good and evil are not always black and white. It is easy to judge, and harder to understand. Joel was forced into this situation where he was able to come to his own "understanding." That is why he asked Henry to come along towards the end. Great reactions! I believe that your reactions were all of us when we watched for the first time!

    As much as what Kathleen says about kids seems cold, it's not only accurate, but turns out to be foreshadowing. Kathleen didn't just lose a brother. When she is in her old room, they said they found her after talking to her mom. So her mother is alive, and was when her son got beaten to death by FEDRA. And from what we know about KC FEDRAm it wouldn't be surprising if his body got put on display as a warning. While Bryan was begging for his life, he mentioned that his mother was nearby and she could help. The only woman we saw nearby was Kathleen. She was also the only woman with the kind of authority to do anything to help Joel. So, I'm pretty sure Kathleen had to watch her son die as well without being able to help him. That is why she mentions Ellie being with the guy who killed Bryan and "kids die all the time." And, as it turns out, just hours after Kathleen says maybe Sam was supposed to die, Henry kills him.

  • @Dark__Thoughts
    @Dark__Thoughts Před 10 měsíci +5

    2:24 Those people were the pile of charred bodies from previous episode.
    I find Sam & Henry's death in the game even worse, because you actually spent way more time with them than in the show and there's some cute scenes that you can potentially catch with Ellie in regards to Sam as well. But yes, their death though, just as that of Tess, and others... Are basically there to emphasize just how fucked up this world they are living in is. That in turn then emphasizes the importance of Ellie's immunity, both for the world, but also herself, as she is the potential solution to fix this broken world and give humanity another chance. A lot of their journey and experiences is basically for character development purposes. This episode also has some interesting parallels with the second game, but that will have to wait... (probably for long if you stick to the show exclusively)

    Again, this episode shows through a character the character of Joel. In this case, Kathleen's. Kathleen behaves after her brother's murder in a similar way to how Joel behaved for 20 years after his daughter's death. Abolut ruthless and killing innocent people. It's only because of Ellie that he's gotten to the point where he tries not to do that anymore. Just because Kathleen hasn't gotten to that point yet doesn't mean she was worse than Joel. Henry also represents Joel. Both sacrifice everything for their family, no matter how many lives of others it costs. Henry has betrayed all his people by his betrayal. Many families were further raped and murdered by Fedra as a result.
