      I subscribed after I saw you with Internet Historian and I’m hooked. I’m more conservative and nationalistic than you and there are a few things we’d probably disagree on politically but when you make fun of Trump and Johnson it doesn’t come off as preachy and make me want to switch off. You toe that line really well. I’ve seen you make fun of right wingers but I’ve also seen you make fun of twitter feminists. If you can keep toeing that line similar to the way South Park does, taking the piss out of everyone equally, you’ll go far.

Laptops, TV`s, furniture, computers, household, camping gear... Everything! They were all coming with the sale receipt attached, there was no limit, from the most expensive, to the 1 dollar toothpick, some items were even sealed! You missed a detail worthy of some snarking: A number of pro-recycling PSAs produced by plastics manufacturers, intended to give the false impression that their product is recyclable and therefore green and sustainable.
    The reality is that plastic can only be recycled to a very limited extent, into lower-grade plastic. Once, maybe twice at best. After that all it's fit for is the incinerator.

    • @SkigBiggler
      @SkigBiggler Před 2 lety +2

      Dunno about that, you can break it back down and make new plastic, it’s just not cost effective. Burying it might not be the worst idea, I can see people in future mining out old landfills for metal and shit. Anyway, biggest issue with plastic recycling is it’s difficult to clean the impurities out, and that plastic can only be re-melted so many times before it breaks down and loses its usefulness. As such recycled plastic should be used for stuff like structural parts of buildings or similar, stuff that won’t be thrown out after a day.

    • @chrissmith3587
      @chrissmith3587 Před rokem +5

      @@SkigBiggler you wouldn’t use polymers for house construction, they are completely ill suited and the recycling process is pretty energy intensive so you’d cause pollution.
      Also you have a difference between mechanical and chemical recycling
      Ie mechanical being rubber tyres are often cut up to make soft park play area ground. Can’t really cut it much smaller to get further use
      While chemical is trying to reduce back to monomers or smaller chains, which can’t be done for a lot of polymers, struggles with impurities and requires virgin materials to make of a decent quality

    • @SkigBiggler
      @SkigBiggler Před rokem

      @@chrissmith3587 yeah, for the most part you’re right. There’s also fire risks with making a house out of plastic. Probably the best usage I’ve seen for old plastic that can’t be recycled is as filler for fence posts on farms. The outside is made of new(ish) plastic, and then the inside is bulked out with shredded soft plastic to give it weight and heft. Fence posts tend to stay around until they stop functioning, so it’s a decent use. There’s not a whole lot of suitable uses to get plastic removed from the waste chain and put into service somewhere permanently. Perhaps in future we’ll have technology to break down plastics that’ll be economical, but for now it’s not really all that achievable.

    • @chrissmith3587
      @chrissmith3587 Před rokem

      @@SkigBiggler fence posts are a solution I’ve not heard of before, do you know the cost vs wooden posts, and how much force could they withstand cause I don’t think enough people would switch unless there was a significant improvement. People tend to like the look of wood
      I don’t think we’ll ever get recycling to really work economically for polymers, hopefully the work on bio polymers should make trash less damaging though

    • @SkigBiggler
      @SkigBiggler Před rokem

      @@chrissmith3587 These are farm posts, so the looks don’t matter, only functionality. I’m not entirely sure on price, but it’s entirely possible they’d be cheaper or on par with the cost of wooden ones, mostly cause wooden farm fence posts are heavily treated so they don’t rot away after a few years. Main advantage of the plastic ones is that they’re longer lived, they don’t rot away so you don’t need to replace them. On bigger farms that’s quite a big deal, removing old posts and installing new ones takes quite a bit of time and effort. My understanding is they’re pretty robust. Currently most polymers aren’t really economically recyclable. Maybe some of the bacteria based stuff they’re looking into will work out, and then it might be easier to do so, since that removes one of the biggest obstacles to most plastic trash, which is contamination and sorting, as well as allowing targeting of plastics that aren’t normally recyclable.

    The easiest way to start cutting out single use plastic is to get a set of thermoses, a filtered water source with interchangeable elements, and a keg. Having your drink always cold is so nice, and stainless steel is easy to clean. Once you’re used to that, cut out fast food. It’s really not that hard to live while using the minimal amount of single use plastic.

Also, you're damn right, consumerism is the problem. Single-use plastic is our biggest threat (fishing gear compromising the largest percentage of plastic in the ocean as a whole, however), but do not underestimate the rest of the waste. Textiles are a huge problem that doesn't just degrade (thanks, fast fashion), and our food waste is shameful. Sang that shit regularly in the Christina school in Rochester "King School Rochester". Those were the days, although never a Christian, its amazing how we all got attached to singing hymns and the whole experience (opinion of a Russian who immigrated to england when he was 7 and lived there ever since). Christian schools are not all that Christina, but generally teach much more than regular schools. I enjoyed religion classes, where they did not teach religion but philosophy and general ethics, different phalacies as well as paradoxes which really forms certain opinions and makes you respect different opinions and outlooks on life.
