    In Atlanta, mid-Oct. 1990, the day Delta held their outdoor ceremony accepting and placing into service their first MD-11, the airline I flew at operated a cargo B707 flight departing ATL during that ceremony. We were empty, and only a small fuel load returning to MIA. We put on a show for them with our old 707. Max power, rolling t/o, very short t/o roll, and V2 climbout to, I believe three, or five thousand feet. All before the departure end of the runway Tower loved it and said they didn't know an old plane like ours could do that. Delta's flt ops sent our flt ops a TELEX saying that those folks attending their MD-11 ceremony had yes, been quite duly thrilled, thank you!! The D.O. met us on arrival to MIA and said: "did you boys really do this right in front of all those people?" Surely someone must still be around in ATL that will remember that one.

    2:01 - If the folks at MD built a twinjet instead of a trijet, they may have enjoyed more success. The Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 really ate away at the market.
    Alas after most of the passenger fleet were retired they still found good use as Freighters.

      @PRH123, Pitch authority is not "insufficient", that's a common myth. The tail has a longer arm as well which reduces the "issue" of the smaller stab. Insufficient authority would be something like, you pull back, and nothing happens.

    As I have mentioned under another of your videos, I worked for McDonnell Douglas Commercial, decades ago, in Long Beach, CA. I was able to see the MD-11 take its maiden flight, out of Long Beach airport. It was very exciting to be there.
    Company folklore included the story of the team at Long Beach wanting to develop, what was at one point, referred to as the Twin 10. Basically, a two engine DC-10, with the introduction of advanced engines and avionics etc. This was ahead of Boeing's 757. Douglas would have been the lead in twin engine widebody aircraft. McDonnell headquarters, in St. Louis, nixed the idea. Didn't want to risk the money. Huge mistake, obviously.
    Also, I had to check on something in the interior of a Swiss Air MD-11 that was out on the flight line, about to be delivered. What a beautiful plane and interior, especially in First Class.

    • @jocelynharris-fx8ho
      @jocelynharris-fx8ho Před 10 měsíci

      This was supposed to be a "documentary" about the MD-11 but most of the video footage, was of the DC-10 or DC-10-30 /40. Northwest did not have MD-11's and neither did United, Hawaiian or SkyService. " Filler" footage is not good. When I had to do presentations in school, we were taught, to make sure that all visual aids had relevance to your oral presentation. Why show the DC-10 when talking about it's successor ? The DC-10 was McDonnell Douglas' worst nightmare and I was told that MD-11 was an attempt to erase some of that bad reputation. It didn't work, especially after the crash of Swissair 111. The reason why the MD-11 was more successful as a freighter, was because after this crash, many people got flashbacks to the disasters of the DC-10 and they didn't want to fly in this gussied up version of the Death Capsule. Also, I feel Boeing made a mistake by merging with them. McDonnell Douglas should have faded quietly into history..

    A very interesting documentary about a unique aircraft . I only flew in one once from FRA to KIX (Kansai) with JAL's J-Bird themed fleet . The horizontal stabiliser was much narrower than the DC-10 which posed unique landing characteristics and challenges for pilots , faster landings than one might expect . Nonetheless it is marvellous to see this 'bird' still flying with the aforementioned cargo carriers though here the B777F and the more recent A350F may see many of these flying one way to Mojave .

    Left out of the narrative was the increase of ETOPS for heavy twins that spelled the death of the -11. Little known was that B-777 was originally considered as a tri-jet, but Boeing decided instead to lobby for the increase between suitable alternates for twins...a strategy which ultimately doomed both tri and quad jets. I flew the -11 for six years, and while it was a joy to fly there were some limits in range (i.e. DFW-NRT) and maintenance was problematic.

The MD-XX design study tried to further perfect their trijet formula. this passenger plane would be comparable to a a340-600 but with 3 engines instead of the a340's 4 engines. Although some airlines where interested mcdonnell douglas canceled the project in 1996 and later merged with boeing in 1997.

    Douglas and Boeing both, were rather brilliant engineering cultures. When the bean counters took the reins, both became a business culture, and the demise was sealed. Douglas and later MD, revolutionized air transport, but still could not survive? It is telling of the nature of American business culture and its priorities.

      A friend who was a Captain on the L1011 and later on the DC10 told me that the manner in which the floor was installed on the L1011 presented issues during the passenger to freighter conversions. I suspect (my opinion) that the DC10s being far more abundant made it a more desirable option, as spare parts would be easier to come by. Additionally (my opinion again), the MD11s would at some point be converted, from passenger to freighter, which from a standpoint of continuity made the DC10 MD11 platform more desirable.

    Yeah the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was doomed before it had left the ground for the 1st time as the market for a wide body tri-jet was dying off in the 1980s and was destroyed by the 1990s
    Realistically the fact that is it still going as a freighter is probably more down to McDonnell Douglas being clever enough to see a need for tri-jet freighter to replace the older DC -10s

    The airline business is fraught with economic complications. A design for the market of one route model, is incompatible with the route reorganization, a few years later. Also the reason why the 747 was phased out of passenger service, and the A380 was an market dud, dead on arrival, though nothing technically wrong with the plane. Add any otherwise minor technical short coming, such as mentioned with the MD11, and now you're playing with a major handicap, which may have been tolerable in the past.
    Saying the MD11 is an upgraded DC10, is the same as saying a F20 is the same as a F5, or a modern F16 has the same as the ones made in the early 1980s. The same basic airframe does not make it the same plane. Look at the 737-MAX, as an example of how a formerly great plane, can be turned into a problem.

      @@dontdeletehistory Boeing right up until the merger of McDonnell Douglas had an excellent reputation for quality control and the culture was built around excellence in production standards and continuous improvements to product delivery & safety. This changed after the merger with M.D whereby M.D executives were brought in (as part of the merger deal) and with it culture started to change and the result of that we started failures with the 737 MAX that ultimately cost the lives of passengers & 787 production issues. The very first 787 wasn't a prototype but was a mere shell built for promotional purposes to introduce a new aircraft. Again this whole scenario reminds me of the M.D days where they had issues with DC - 10 that resulted in lives lost.
