"The PT-17 traces its roots to the Stearman Model 70, built as a private venture to meet a 1934 U.S. Army Air Corps request for a new trainer to replace its aging primary trainer fleet. Re-engined with a Wright J-5 Whirlwind, the design was first ordered by the U.S. Navy in 1935 as the NS-1. Using a Lycoming R-680-5 radial engine and known as the Model 75, the Air Corps ordered the type into production as the PT-13 in 1936. With a variety of engines and designations, the Model 75 went on to become one of the most widely produced and used primary trainers in U.S. military service.
The Model 75 biplane featured a fabric-covered, welded steel tube fuselage and spruce wing construction, and enjoyed a reputation as a simple, cost effective design. Student pilots occupied the front cockpit, while the instructor sat in a rear cockpit with identical controls. Its rugged, forgiving nature made it an excellent primary trainer, providing a relatively safe introduction for pilot trainees into military flight.
The Boeing Aircraft Company bought out the Stearman Company in the middle 1930s, and continued production of the Model 75 for the military. Although built by Boeing, the Model 75 continued to be known as the “Stearman”. In 1940, a Continental R-670-5 engine was fitted to the design to create the PT-17, of which over 3,500 were eventually ordered for U.S. Army service. The plane also enjoyed large U.S. Navy orders as the N2S, and in 1942 both services adopted an interchangeable version as the N2S-5/PT-13D, powered by the Lycoming R-680-17 engine. Demand for the Stearman at the outbreak of World War II outstripped engine supply, so another powerplant, the Jacobs R-755-7, was used on the airframe to create the PT-18."

I liked your Paris Hilton impression at the end.
Hahahaha now that us funny 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Hahaha
Love the PT-17! He really turned it into a Bush Plane though...
I'm glad the damages seemed minor. NIIIIIIIIICE! 😁👍
Hahaha thanks Dave and yep, he had it up and flying again that same day! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Ryan. Such a beautiful Bi-plane. Those radials have such perfect sound. Looks like a lot of detail when into it. Excellent flight. Sure sorry to see he run out of airstrip. Been there done that before. I’m sure it looks to be a quick and easy fix. Thanks for sharing your day with us.
The good news is he had it up in the air again later that day and setup his approach earlier after chatting with Roy and I 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Haha. Thats not a crash. Just a bad landing. Soooo glad. :))
Thanks for watching! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Thank goodness it was on landing, didnt tear it up much. Landing gear are easy to fix.
Totally! If you look at the end cap, we made a redemption flight video a few hours after this flight.
Thanks for sharing such an outstanding model with us GB. !
Thank you Michael! I showed it to Darci at the event and she said, “Oh no! You aren’t getting one of those!” The funniest part is I told her beforehand that I didn’t want one since we wouldn’t have room anyway lol 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Gorgeous plane. Lots of inertia on landing. Hopefully easily fixed. A pleasure to watch. 👍🏻🙂
Thank you very much Randy and it was easy for him to fix it 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Not a “crash “. More of a hard landing. Looks like no severe damage on that beautiful bird. Could have been way worse!! Keep up the great flying!
I am just the cameraman, but I am sure he is still flying it hard somewhere 👊🏻💥👊🏻
@@GBLynden not a crash at all. Clickbait.
It certainly is a nice PT-17. Fix the bent gear, knock the dirt off and it'll fly....I know the pilot is happy about that, for sure.
Good stuff GB, AirHammer out!!
Thank you Air Hammer! He did have it flying again by the end of the day 👊🏻💥👊🏻
A Moki always sounds great! Not to bad of a fix. It looks to be a great flying bird.
It is a nice sounding motor for sure! The next flight up after the repair he setup the landing much earlier and it was perfect 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Glad to see it survived, beautiful model and great flying!
Thank you Rusty! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I bet you can feel the thrust! 🤣 Crash or not, those Moki’s sound incredible. Easy fix for sure. Awesome plane!
That guy had it fixed in 2 hours and was back for a redemption flight and landed it perfectly. Super cool guy and a beautiful plane. ✌️😎🤘
I agree 100% Dave! They flat out purr 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Amazing-looking bird... That radial sounds good despite being fairly small - extremely similar to the real thing. Love it
Thank you very much! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Dude was Scaling like a Pro!
But Captain Crunch invited Himself, Again.
Great Show,, BAAMMM!
Hahaha thanks Jono 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Go around ! Go around ! Good one GB 👍😀
Thank you Mike! I am glad you liked it my friend 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Awesome plane. Great videoing thanks for sharing!.
Thank you very much! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
great looking PT; what a sound...hopefully not bad...
Thanks JCB! Luckily he was able to repair it in a couple of hours 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Thanks for the video GB. Great looking plane. Awesome scale flying. ✈️🧔💝
Thank you John! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
easy enough fix, Great flying otherwise. Thanks GB!
It only took him two hours and it was back rocking again 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Wow, that is one of the most gorgeous PT-17s I've ever seen! Flys like a dream too. What's that old line about the runway behind you? This plane can take off in 10', but it's heavy and makes a huge amount of thrust at idle. She needs a lot of space to land, slow, & stop...100' to be safe? Don't risk stalling her either. Never fear going around. (Sorry for the obvious advice.)
I agree! After he repaired it, a buddy of my and I chatted with him about a better game plan for landing. The next flight had a perfect landing.
Three things that are useless to a pilot, the runway behind you, the fuel still in the truck and the sky above you.
Mine flys just like this one and the Moki 250-7 is a pleasure to start..keeping all 7 hot is a challenge, but worth every penny. Nice job
That is awesome! I will be posting the redemption flight video soon 👊🏻💥👊🏻
What a beauty. Ya, that was hot coming in. Didn't look to bad... Sound was fantastic. 🙂
I am happy to report that it was back up in the air later that day and he had a better landing plan for that next flight 👊🏻💥👊🏻
That's a crash? It'll buff out. Outstanding plane. There's nothing like a big floaty biplane for relaxed fun. I have 3 of them.
The next flight up after the repair he setup the landing much earlier and it was perfect 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Beautiful plane, love the radial !! beautiful flight! Nice landing , just missed the mark
I have to agree with all of that! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Great RC.
Thank you! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
There is something about the sound of a radial, no matter the size. That field is pretty tight for a plane that size. Hopefully the semi soft grass kept it from being damaged too much.
I agree! After he repaired it, Roy and I helped him come up with a better game plan for landing there. It was a success and that video will be uploaded I am not sure when lol 👊🏻💥👊🏻
@@GBLynden Excellent! Looking forward to it.
Sweet rig! Easy fix!
It took him a few hours to fix it, but he got it up in the air again later that day 👊🏻💥👊🏻
That plane is beautiful and he is a pretty cool guy. I thought it was awesome that he repaired it and redeemed himself. Awesome video GB. That was a fun day 👊💥💥👊
That was a fun day for sure and the pilot really is a cool guy! He took our landing advice and it paid off 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Beautiful plane.
It really is George! I had you in mind for the target audience when I posted this video 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Beautiful plane engine sounds cool too
Thank you Larry! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Definitely fantastic build the lift is gorgeous more landing footage
I have an upload of this plane from a few months back and one yet to be edited and posted, which is the redemption flight for this one 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Brilliant a good 5/10 well done 👍
Thanks!
The concept of a stabilized approach continues to elude most RC'ers
He did great on his next flight after he repaired it 😜
Beautiful plane Ryan....great camera work as always.
Thank you Norm! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
That thing is awesome nice video
Thank you! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Sir, great workmanship, it's a real joy to see this aircraft fly, it's a beautiful bird on the ground as well as in the air. Thank you for sharing your Bird.
Thanks Randy! I am just the cameraman, but I have to agree. It is a beast 👊🏻💥👊🏻
looks and sounds incredible 😀👍👍👍👌😎😎
Thank you my friend! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Good video GB beautiful PT 17 at least it wasn't a bad crash it'll fly another day
Thank you Alan! I agree and the plane did too. It flew again later in the day 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I guess the next thing to do is animate the little pilot and student so they can wave at spectators.
Hahaha
Those take a lot of rudder to coordinate a turn, you can see the adverse yaw in many of the turns from not enough leading rudder. Just like the real thing. Beautiful build, good luck with it.
I am just the cameraman, but I do have the redemption flight coming up soon 👊🏻💥👊🏻
That Moki purrs so nicely and so quiet! The only gasser that’s not so obnoxiously loud. I guess the bigger the plane, the better they retain their momentum. Good looking approach and landing otherwise.
It is a nice sounding motor for sure! The next flight up after the repair he setup the landing much earlier and it was perfect 👊🏻💥👊🏻
It ain't hurt..
I almost didn't watch because I didn't want to see such a beautiful airplane get destroyed!!
Glad that didn't happen
Luckily that was the case, except for the messed up landing gear.
Gawd, those Mokis are so bad-ass
I totally agree! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Great shots, Bro.
Thank you Brother! Happy Easter 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Very nice plane regardless. I really want one with a big radial
It is pretty dang awesome for sure! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Had a perfectly tuned engine. So smooth yet crashes so beautifully
Very well said Steve! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
@@GBLynden Actually that was a great job of keeping it to a gentle flip over. Plane have just been scuffed. Don’t think I’ve seen a plane fly more stable!!
The best part is he had it fully repaired a few hours later and got in a redemption flight, which had a perfect landing.
Beautiful aircraft....fly that thing ! I was waiting for it to fall out of the sky. airspeed is your friend
Airspeed is your friend for sure!
I just built exact same plane and it's a beautiful plane to fly and display hanging from ceiling in your rc hanger aka garage where you work and store planes. I love it flies so beautiful I same motor and everything to I went from flying 40 inch wing span balsa electric and a few gas planes right to this like it was nothing
I am just the guy on the camera, but it really did seem like a great flyer! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Nice flight. Looked like the real thing till it landed
Thanks! 👊🏻💥👊🏻 It looks real in person too lol
Looks so real, only needs the passenger to wave on a flyby.
Great comment! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Good morning to all from SE Louisiana 5 May 22.
Good morning Bill! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Looking at the streamers blowing in the wind, it appeared that the model was landing downwind, never a good idea when the field is short.
I agree. I was just on the camera 😎
6:33 is the moment he should have powered up for a go-around
That is true! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
HI GB SUCH A AMAZING LOOKING PLANE SUCH A SHAME. IT SADDENS ME TO SEE. TAKE CARE GB HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND SIR 🇬🇧🇺🇲🕊️👊🏼
Thank you Mike! The good news is he had it back in the air in about 2 hours and I got footage of the flight.
@@GBLynden REALLY GLAD TO HEAR THAT. AMAZING PLANE GREAT ENGINE FLEW PERFECT 🇬🇧🇺🇲🕊️👊🏼
Does not look to be badly damaged my father had the real deal as a kid I flew with him a lot . He was in local air shows with me in the front seat often after that no roller coaster was as great as that !
You are right and very cool! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
What was this recorded with? The video looks really nice and clear when you zoom.
Thanks Jake! My camera is no longer available, but part of it is how I render my videos in the editing software. It is top of the line 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Beautiful workmanship ! And awesome flying ! And in real life, those pilots would have walked away.... NOW fix that beast !! And how many horses is that radial pushing ???📈♨️🏁
Well said Scotty! I wish I knew how many horses, but I know they are smooth horses 👊🏻💥👊🏻
He landed it like he flew it, way too hot for a Stearman. Good thing it's a ARF and he can get any part he wants from World models. Only damage looks to be a tweaked left gear anyway! Love that Moki. I need one in a large T6.
That Moki is amazing! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I usually fly it nice and slow but at the time some guys wanted to see how the Moki 250 could haul it around. The field is really tight for a 53 pound planes. It takes quite awhile to roll to a stop
Any specs on the plane: wingspan, scale, weight, manufacturer ?
I wish I knew, but the pilot does subscribe to this channel, so he might be able to help give that info. I am just the cameraman 👊🏻💥👊🏻
nice flight! not too bad of a crash either..
Thank you! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
@@GBLynden no problem!
Beautiful biplane 🔥 Dang that was hard to watch. Didn't look to bad over all though. ✌️
Thank you Erric! You are correct, he was able to finish repairing it later that day and I have a redemption flight to repost.
@@GBLynden That's awesome to hear 👍
Those weeds made a pretty soft crash barrier.
Be flying again in no time.
That is very true! I recently uploaded his redemption flight with it a few hours later 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Magnífico biplano de escalonamiento negativo y esquí plano de tren de aterrizaje no rectratil muy hermosas las pérdidas que hace
Thank you! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Bummer it flew great though!
Thank you Vic and I agree! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I was waiting for the pilot to tip stall it and spin it into the ground. By the looks of those streamers it looked like he landed down wind albeit very little wind.
I have a redemption flight a few hours after this coming soon 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I thought it had lost it's propeller for a moment with the RPM increase ?
It stayed on and fly again later that day 👊🏻💥👊🏻
@@GBLynden very pleased to hear that
Was a go around out of the question?
I am just the cameraman. I do know for sure that he was disappointed that it ended up like that.
might just be me but with the half speed sounded like "arsehole" "arsehole"
I used to fly RC first with dad then on my own with my dads
such a beautiful Stearman large scale so much time and love in these projects
but what skill you demonstrated I do hope it wasn't to much to put right, lovely job, nice one fella.
Hahaha I love that part about what it sounded like in slow-mo lol This plane is a legit beauty for sure and I might have been more scared than the pilot when it tumbled into the grass 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Oh what a shame after a perfect flight, I’m just getting into rc flying and it’s a fiddly and frustrating hobby, I tore my Wing aileron off yesterday jumping over a fence ! So annoyed today :( only had it a week !
Oh wow! Which planes are you flying? Check out my recommended progression on GBLynden.com under the Learn To Fly tab.
Not as bad as I thought....
I was happy about that too. I expected the wings to have damage but luckily all was good 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Where is this field located?
In Ferndale, WA
A little too far down the runway when he touched down, glad it wasn't damaged more than a bent landing gear.
Yep! Check out the redemption flight I posted recently. It shows him flying it again just a few hours later 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I would hardly call that a crash. It's always a tough split second decision, should you let her roll straight and into the grass or ground loop trying to stop.
That is a good point about straight into the grass or into a ground loop, which would have done even more damage! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
With the markings it should be identified as a Navy N2S-4
Very cool 👊🏻💥👊🏻
That thing sings...
It really does! Have never a better tuned RC Gaser in my life 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Damn, after such a beautiful flight having that off the runway ending sucks. Shit ending to what was otherwise a great flight and landing.
Thanks brother! It was back in the air in two hours will a better game plan for landing thanks to Roy and I 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I heard you say “looks just like a real plane”. It is in fact a real plane and if you’ve never flown a giant scale r/c aircraft, it is understandable how one could make such a misstatement.
Yep, it looked just like a full scale plane in the sky. Major presence in the sky is something rare at most RC Fields these days.
Gorgeous plane and well flown. Too bad about the short runway. Should be a pretty routine repair.
I wish my E-flite 1100mm sounded like that!!!
I wish my car sounded like that!!! lol Thanks for stopping by my friend 👊🏻💥👊🏻
All models eventually crash.
But such a joy till they do.....
That seems to be the case. Thank you for watching!
Not radio control, I saw the pilot in the cockpit
Are you trolling? lol
That was a $500 landing!!! Big planes, lots of energy. Planes are meant to fly, not mow grass.
Luckily he was able to bend the gear back and fly it again later that day. The next flight had a much better landing that started closer to the other end of the runway 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I have that plane. I assume it’s a BUSA Stearman. I fly mine with a Valach 250. I have also learned the energy lessons. Mine weighs in at 68 pounds.
Should have done a bolter.
Yep, should have tried to get it up again, but after he repaired it, he just set up his landing a little sooner and it was perfect. We also caught that redemption flight on video 👊🏻💥👊🏻
why land it downwind??? GS too high.
I am just the cameraman lol
Very steep approach with final landing just at the end of the runway. That you could do only with a 5kg (10 pound) model.
Check out the redemption flight I just posted. It was a few hours after this flight and he made me proud 👊🏻💥👊🏻
That’s when you should put the spurs to the ole girl on the first bounce I might add.
Hahaha 👊🏻💥👊🏻
PERFECT EVERYTHING INCLUDING LANDING VERY CHALLENGING ANYTIME 😊
Yep, he just ran out of runway 👊🏻💥👊🏻
He did a great job staying on top of a seriously tail heavy airplane. After the premature liftoff I was worried it would be borderline unflyable. It was, but good rudder work goes a long way. You can see it’s consistent tendency to pitch up harder than commanded due to the short moment arm between the CG and the CL. The pitch oscillations are a little spooky too. These far forward-wing biplanes and triplanes were designed to balance very heavy engines up front.
When he was starting the engine, the balance looks way off, even visually. The empennage is very long and structurally beefy and the engine looks kind of dwarfed by it all. Add the far forward fulcrum of the wing placement and wow it looks like a tough design problem to solve. The fact that it flies at all is testimony to good coordinated piloting skills and very gentle stall characteristics.
Recommend a pound of lead in the nose or more desirably, moving internals forward where possible. The good news is, the straight gear with the main wheels pretty far aft for a tail dragged is manageable. If the balance was better for flying it would be worse for ground handling and lots of up elevator would be a must to keep from somersaulting.
That is a lot of useful feedback! I plan to post the flight he made later in the afternoon as a redemption flight after that crash. You would be proud of him 👊🏻💥👊🏻
I’d sneak a 15 degree dual aileron flap mix onto that big boy, too.
WHO WOULD FLY A TAIL HEAVY PLANE THAT LONG ? IF IT WAS MINE IT WOULD BE BACK ON THE GROUND AFTER ONE GO ROUND...WHY WAIT ? MUST NOT HAVE BEEN AN ISSUE THEN I GUESS? STRAIGHT UP PILOT ERROR,
@@crashalexander7232
Overshooting the runway isn’t a balance issue. The exaggerated pitching up from takeoff to landing is a balance issue.
@@FFE-js2zp never said anything about overshooting the runway....read my post again slowly and use your comprehension skills,,,lol
Engine almost sounds full scale
I normally prefer electrics, but I can listen to this one all day long 👊🏻💥👊🏻
О, yeeeeeeeeeeeeees!
Thank you! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
That flying field is way too small. That landing gear is repairable.
Hi Steve! The field is pretty tight if you do not setup for your landings correctly for sure. I will be dropping a redemption flight with it after the repairs in a week or two 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Sad to see.
The landing did exactly what it was supposed to do in a sideways crash like that, absorb energy.
Good point! The good news is there is a redemption flight video up in the channel 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Love the airplane. Great video, and the crash was not too bad. Looks like it's fixable. But, I could have done without the narration.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I flew 35 and 40% planes for about 5 or 6 years steady. And I crashed and completely destroyed a couple of Extras. But never on landing. I cant understand why people seem to screw up landing all the time. Not just this video but on numerous RC videos. Always guys choke on landing.
That makes sense and I am sorry about your loss! He had a pretty large audience at the event this was recorded at. Thanks for your comment and story 👊🏻💥👊🏻
@@GBLynden I finally gave up the hobby after traveling to Tucson for the Desert Shootout. I watched those guys to try and learn something. But collected the remnants of my 260 off the desert floor after impact. That was it for me. But hey, at least I went straight in coming out of loop - tail separation.
The ending wasn't so smooth.
That is a fact! You should watch the redemption flight after hours of repairs that same day. The pilot is a great guy too 👊🏻💥👊🏻
3:24-3:27 GAG me already! I'm outta here. Sorry pilot, love to stay but there's work elsewhere and much respect for (your) build and flight! Steve S., from Michigan†
🤣
Had one in our neighborhood for years, until the dude got drunk an crashed it.
Woah!!! That is really unfortunate!
This is not really a crash!
Not enough carnage for you? lol

That it does sir! 👊🏻💥👊🏻
