Will It Run? Abandoned 11 years ago. DR Field and Brush Mower

- I picked this up at a yard sale in unknown condition along with some other machines, the owner is moving and this was in the back corner of the garage since 2009, lets see what it will need?

Mustie, I wanted to share a quick story to give you an idea of the positive impact and reach you have with your channel. I grabbed a freebie wood chipper this morning with a nice 8hp Briggs on it. Little rusty, “hasn’t been run in years”. Got it home and had my teenage sons come out for some lessons. You got to understand, my dad wasn’t mechanically inclined at all and could barely work a screwdriver so it took me many years of hands on figuring-it-out and learning from others to get a basic knowledge of fixing things. Your channel has taught me many valuable lessons and probably most import, the proper method for troubleshooting which I want to impart on my kids. We went down the list:
Pulled it over to make sure it wasn’t seized
Checked oil level and condition
Checked for spark
Fuel tank was bone dry and smelled good
Dribbled some gas in the cylinder, popped the plug back in and pulled it over
It fired right up (insert Mustie laugh here)
Put a little gas in the tank and she ran without issue. Not stutters, noises, etc.
Both tires were off the bead so I taught my boys the ratchet strap trick to air the,m up. Both seated and took air to proper pressure.
We now have a nice little chipper/shredder that cost zero dollars and gave me the opportunity to pass on the knowledge I’ve learned from your videos to my sons. You can’t put a price on that.
Thank you for all you do providing such useful, valuable and quality content. It is greatly appreciated!
That is an awesome story. Even if your children never choose to fix things later in their lives, they will never forget that you taught them what can be done. Regards, Al.
Al .
Sometimes you can always wait on someone else to fix something for you a very valuable skill
Great Story. Thanks man!
" You can't put a price on that"
Agree 💯👍👍👍
Repaired an 83 Suzuki FA50 yesterday, sat for 30 years. I knew what I was doing only because I’ve watched this channel for years. Runs great and learned a few things along the way.
Nice work!
I'm mostly disabled after being a gearhead most of my life. Content like this keeps me sane.
Same here, and I got into radioing as well, 73 KO8K
Agreed
Your sound effect timing was impeccable. I legit wasn’t sure if that was you or your grease gun making that noise until you fessed up. 🤦♂️😆
I was listening with my ear buds and laughing out loud. As usual, my wife looked at me like I was nutz!
Mustie1, I just want to thank you for all the great content you give all of us each and every week!! I love the long videos, which I know makes it harder to edit and longer hours to edit, but hopefully it's paying off for you knowing how much it helps so many people. You help people tackle the things that they might be to afraid to try and your videos give them the confidence and the push they need. Also the memories you bring back to people in your projects are priceless. Would you ever consider doing a live Q&A? Thank you again for all you hard work!!
@imacgst - I think you speak for a lot of us.
Its nice to be able to watch with my son with no language aye. Mustie is a neat guy. Cheers. Jeff and Mal
Well said. You took the words out of my mouth 😂.
I mighta got fooled into putting my tongue on that spark plug 3000 episodes ago, but now I'm wise to you, Mustie1! lol!
The DR field and brush mower. Classic 90's TV
Deep River Bassin i used to beg my dad to get one because of those infomercials.
"And if you call now!..." I remember those days
Even in the 2000s from what I remember, they are tanks
The infomercial you'd actually watch
Have to agree, classic. I actually think they're better than many machines including Gravely.
I have a DR similar to this one, but with 17HP motor. I believe the hanging orange wire under the control panel is for the optional hour meter. Only safety to start should be transmission in neutral, then the key will kick it over (haven't watched the whole video yet, you probably already figured this out).
There's a lever to loosen the deck belt on the top of the deck, right side facing forward....vice grips not needed
You are correct Mr. Heck. That is for the optional hour meter.
There's no such thing as taking advantage on a Offer. They always have the right and opertunity to say NO
And he probably gives a better offer than what most others would.
Besides, a lot of people aren't actively trying to get top dollar for old equipment, they're just trying to clean out their garage/yard for whatever reason and want a few bucks in return. I've given away/sold stuff super cheap for the same reason when moving: I know I could get more, but I want it gone now and it is cheap or the landfill.
I'd have to say it depends on the scenario. Ever seen American Pickers where the seller suggests a price and the pickers offer a higher price trying to be fair? With an estate especially where the seller may know nothing about the items being sold, it is only right to be fair and not take advantage. $500 for this mower not running and no history is certainly fair. We've all been there with a repair that requires lots of specialty parts that add up to far more than the machine is worth.
@Allan Charles So a fair price is anything the seller will agree to (as long as it isn't a collectable)? What if the seller is older with potentially diminished mental capacity?
@Allan Charles I responded to the post that said there is no such thing as taking advantage of an offer, saying I don't believe it's quite that simple. I'm not sure if that's what you're responding to, but your statement "acting like this is a case of...." doesn't match anything I've said, so perhaps you're mixing up different replies. People can and do take advantage of others unfairly. I have not said this is the case with this purchase nor would it be my place to do so.
I had to laugh, at the person who thought you took advantage.... Used equipment that is not running, the price starts at scrap value....
Buying used stuff, will quickly remove any faith you ever had in humanity..... with a shop vac, usually... Complete clean out.
Dealerships! Ohhh, that's another one.... Don't get me started....
Great video. When running properly, those things are amazing....
An estate sale is just a high priced garage sale.
The same type of guy who tells people the car they have for sale is worth an inflated price bur never steps up and buys it
Patrick Morrissey and here I thought he gave too much
They don't call them Stealerships for nothing.
Spot on... The hours that goes into fixing an unknown machine sometimes is more often then none, not worth the time for most folks.. For people like Mustie and like me... its the thrill of victory and not the agony of defeat. hahahah
much better action footage than those old commercials , nice pad 👍
I have a Troybilt sickle bar mower that belonged to my dad. It actually worked when I used it a few years back. I tried to use it this year and nothing. Tires didn’t hold air, gas poured out everywhere from the area of the carb. I put 2 new tubes in the tires ( the tires are cracking so I hope it lasts) and I pulled the carb off and pulled the bowl off. Everything was frozen. Throttle plate, choke so I sprayed carb cleaner on it and put it in my $8 Harbor Freight thrift shop bought ultrasonic cleaner with water and “Greased Lightning” cleaner.
I put it all back. No leaks and it fired right up. Thanks Mustie for sharing your experience. It’s like I’ve seen this done so now I can do it.
That thing is a combination heavy-duty lawnmower and chain saw. With respect to whoever was beefing about Mustie taking advantage of the former owner’s widow - c’mon! She wasn’t going to use any of this stuff and most people wouldn’t have a clue how to fix it and as Mustie said, he may very well have paid $500 for a completely scrap machine. Besides, he partially makes a living fixing and reselling old machines - if he pays retail for them, he couldn’t make any money.
Exactly, just like they do on the Pickers program. It costs them time and transport costs and preparation costs and they have to hold it till they find a buyer, just like Mustie1 has to.
Yeah. Previous owner could have paid shop rate for diagnosis, carb, battery, coil installed only to have a rod knock show up once the engine was running and warm- and took a huge loss. A non-running machine isn’t worth much (often free) and my guess is she didn’t want the hassle, or to invest the cash for repair, or take the risk of a possible loss to try get it running- all for the chance of getting a bit more than what Mustie likely offered.
I woke up yesterday, made my coffee, sat down at the computer and quietly freaked out. No Mustie1 video! Took me a moment to realize it was only Saturday. Whew.
ive done that too,
jay w
Haha phew
Saturday is This Old House hour, Sunday is wrench day😂
Your like an old shop teacher, shop should be taught in Secondary schools nowadays. 👍🏼
Thanks for taking us along Mustie1, nice mower! Stay safe.
She looked like it should be in great shape, but looks can be deceiving. That is the main reason you offer a discounted price when you buy it.
If it was running on one cylinder, that might also explain the gas in the oil.
My thoughts exactly
Mustie1 Which of the brush hogs do you like better the old one or the newer one.
Looks like the older one is easier to handle
Does sounds likes running on one cylinder.
If that's the case, definitely change the filter. The sooner the better!
100% agree, if it's got hydro's those are extremely expensive, once it's older no guarantee you can even find parts and it might be an expensive paperweight. I found a really cool Coleman 2800 OHV generator that needed carb work...all parts for it are discontinued...also found an awesome Honda EM500 generator that was cheap...turned out the previous owner cleaned the carb and forgot the emulsion tube which is discontinued along with the carb...turned into a 20 dollar paperweight.
It's surprisingly relaxing watching someone servicing a engine ...you like Bob Ross of mechanics
Well said man.
That's a real man's lawn mower. Mustie videos helped me get my Honda Ascot Ft500 going again, cheers.
That gentleman, RIP, had some great 👍 equipment. You shouldn’t have any problems on the re-sale 🤑...
Gota say, more often than not I pick up a good idea from you (magnet to hold the plug to ground). Looking forward to the next “Will it Run”.
Thanks for sharing
Regardless of what you paid for it I'm glad you were able to fix it and save it from the landfill! Great video!
Here’s a theory: The guy who thinks you took advantage on the sale is the guy who doesn’t look after his stuff, it breaks, he can’t fix it himself, and has to go buy another one.
He then gets pissed that someone else can fix it.
It’s always a gamble when you are buying something not working. It’s a risk, so not worth nearly as much.
I don't think Mustie takes advantage, after all he is buying as is equipment. He is taking a chance and it could go either way. I really enjoy his videos. I only wish he lived near me in Missouri. I do repair a multitude of equipment, mainly trucks. I have a gravely collection, several tractors and other machines that I maintain. Great job Mustie and thanks for your video's.
You know, since I have been watching Mustie, he convinced me to do more myself. It accually helps seeing his vids and learn from him!
So I thank U Mustie for all you do for me and all you're viewers.
Keep up, I love you're vids!!!!!
Greets from Jur 🇳🇱
Hey Mustie1 thanks for another great video! You've inspired me to build up my tool collection and wrench on some projects I might not have attempted in the past. I give you credit for working in this heat and humidity! Cheers!
Liking the Mustie1 video on a Sunday morning. I use a pair of alligator clamps with a piece of wire connected between them to ground the plug when checking for spark: no shorting through my body :-)

Coming from a 15 year I old Iove watching your videos. They are very educational for me and teach me some stuff I didn't even know.
Keep saying the old DR is left at the lot and someone watching video might just get it!! Now if it comes up missing, it ain't me!! I'm in N.E. Texas!! Love the process you go thru!! Thanks!!
Thank you for showing the ends & outs of this machine! I want one for brush cutting the farm as well as switching out for the snow blade for the hundred yard driveway! 😀👍🏻
Good morning / evening world, I wait all week for a Mustie1 video on Sunday. :) thanks for completing my weekend Mustie1!
My pleasure!
That was a great find, always wanted one but the cost to actual use value was prohibiting me from making a dive, but you have the perfect use for it, I will just continue using my tractor and brush cutter. You are the luckiest person when it comes to finding good stuff free.
Awe man! I thought for sure that we would see you run and do a cannonball off the deck! Thanks for another great video!
What a machine!! Never seen something like that before😁. Great video, thanks for sharing this lovely wrenching with us!
I picked up a Cub Cadet copy of this type of machine earlier this spring. Although running, it also needed some love. It worked well for expanding the yard, but with twin overlapping blades that have a timing belt, it's a bear to deal with when it slips time once the blades come in contact with some they can't cut. Overall, a good machine, but the DR looks more heavy duty and with a single blade, it may be better for what I need.
Usually Sleep In On Sunday’s But I’ve Been Waiting On This Since 4:30Am Good Morning Mustie And Everyone
Same here, I was up at 5am waiting for it.
hello
You guys are badass. I'm watching now
Agree! Always enjoy these repair videos!
Good morning from sask.
What a coincidence ! I too was abandoned in a field 11 years ago. And I can still run (slowly).
But Mustie has been my "go to" thru the pandemic. THANKS
Excellent fix! Super view, at the cabin!!!
Aah, My fix for the week is here. Another outstanding tutorial video with some fun thrown in 😁.
Ecellent camera views we get on this channel. That's the thumbs up from me. Telling is one thing, but showing helps a lot!
You are the one that I go to for a great time watching videos on CZcams. I love watching you fix up something that everyone else has given up on. I only wish we lived closer to each other because I would love to meet you and see your shop. I've bought a couple of MTD limited edition ride on mower's and want to make a good one out of two mower's, but unfortunately my age and health has made it hard to get them done. I also have a VW trike that I want to get finished before I leave this earth but I don't think that is going to happen. I've told my brother and sister that if that doesn't happen to put my ashes on the back seat and give me a final ride on it, then it's his trike. Take care of yourself and keep the videos coming.
I tell you what Darren That is one Awesome Machine and you were a little worried about the sound of it. I think your right about it being the Clutch making that funny sound. This is one pretty good buy it does the job it was meant for.
I have worked on many DR equipment (DR was headquarted here in VT before Generac bought them). That 'powerhead' you have had several attachments available (Generator, mower, snowblower....etc) Some even had a 'lockable' drive axle. (instead of plain differential) There were several engine-sizes too. That Kawasaki was the biggest engine available That orange wire hangin down was for optional headlamp. (blowin snow in the dark)
Thanks so much for producing such interesting and entertaining content, I genuinely look forward to my Sunday Mustie fix here in the U.K. 🇬🇧. 👍
Great purchase Mustie. I think you paid a good price for the machine. That thing has plenty of guts to do what you need to do. Thanks for the video.
Great video you make it look easy. I appreciate your thinking out loud and taking us down the path with you.
I once watched a video where a guy cleaned out the fuel tank by throwing some paper towels in it and then using an air gun to blow them around inside the tank. The tank came out really clean, even in the corners.
That older one is pure vintage in appearance, love it!
Great cameo by the Taryl mug.
It's just like a movie referencing another movie. LOL.
God bless
Exactly the video I needed, Sir. I’ve got one just a year or so older than yours. My last attempt to fix was purchasing new coils just since they are known to fail eventually. These machines are beasts when running properly.
Looks like the movie “On Golden Pond” You made a good deal, ya didn’t take advantage of anyone. If the equipment was crap, the same people would say you got screwed. Great video showing how well the DR worked. Thanks.
Makes my Sunday mornings Mustie 1. Thanks for sharing!
You are right these are known to have coil issues.
That thing could munch up trees....Loved the Lakeside demo...
Pretty good deal, both ways. Careful with the tire pressures. Check the tire pressure numbers on the sidewalls. Those tires are meant to be relatively soft for compliance with the surface. Ten PSI sounds about right. Good job on the repairs.
Mustie vids are my (Australian) Sunday night ritual.
same here mate
RecordCouncil
Me too!
Great deal on that machine, there are a whole lot of folks who would have junked it for not running right but you brought it back to life, the Lady got something for it and it is no longer in her garage. Win-Win for both of you. Those machines are beasts!
Thank you Mustie!!! Loved the video. I learn something every week from you!
Sunday morning with mustie, brilliant, ❤ from the uk, 😁👍
Mustie haters are gonna hate my friend. You actually fix things and who the heck is gonna pay crazy prices for something that hasn't run forever. If they wanna complain they should go watch mower and blowers where he is like a used car salesman that just covers things up and sales it. Leave Mustie alone and shut up Lazyboy mechanics.
People don’t realize when you buy things for resale there has to be a margin on top of what you have to put into it. Also it’s Noones job to inform or educate the seller. With all the info on the internet and forsale apps people show know how to price accordingly.
They don't seem to understand who a free market works. One person has money. The other a product. The first wants the product more than his money. The second wants money more than his product. When they agree on a price, the first now has the product he wanted more than the money he spent. The second now has the money he wanted more than the product he sold. This is called a win/win situation. Both now have what they really wanted.
Well if they would have listened they have not ran in 11 years
There are no musty haters
Now, why would they hate your friend?😁
I was mowing some head high stuff with one of those older models once. I recall I somehow climbed over this huge fallen log. I had to take a min to climb to the other side before I could continue. Thanks for upload.
EVERY ONE of your Vids is chocked full of how to's = I LOVE ALL OF THEM!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Great way to start the morning! Thanks for upload!
Those Kawasaki FH engines are known to have coil issues especially if they sit or get rusted. They also have issues with the governor shaft seal leaking. $5-6 oem kawa part and about 15 minutes to change and it's good to go. Same with the crank seals.
Hey Mustie, I saw from another CZcamsr @andrewcamarata on how to clean out gas tanks. He throws a paper towel in there and blasts it with air. It tosses the towel and does a great job picking out the grime. It’s my new go to method. Keep the great content coming!
If there's something really grungy with limited access, a chain mail scrubber for cast iron works well if the tank can be removed. Just toss it inside and shake and swirl it around, then rinse out.
Thanks for sharing. I just love a good yard sale score. Have fun.
Great video as always. They make a brush blade for that that is probably 3/8-1/2 thick. Great for thicker saplings and brush up to around 2"
I bought one of these about a month ago for $50. It's not as nice or as new but everything works. It was not running and needed a battery and fuel system cleaning just like this one. Mine has a single cylinder Kawasaki and a lockable differential.
Thank you for replacing the flag decal and especially for doing it with such care and respect. Loud and clear, good friend; loud and clear,
I get a weird sense of satisfaction that these machines can be resurrected after sitting. And grateful you helped me up my skills. Thanks Mustie 1
My Sunday morning is not complete without a vid from mustie1 many thanks .
Same as (although it is evening here in Thailand).
Person who said you took advantage by offering a low price.
I bet they've learnt a lot from you by watching your vids, for free!
I call that " taking advantage"
Morning!
"Vice grips for every occasion" Well I'll be dipped; A guy can approve of that!
Sunday, nice cup of coffe and Mustie! I love watching you man!
"You can't leave anything nice at the cabin, It'll get stolen"! That speaks volumes of your neighbors. Love your show, learn something every time.
thieves are everywhere. go watch them steal motorcycles out of a gated community. yes, they do.
Perfect Sunday!! 😀
Nothing like coffee and Mustie in the morning!
It's a mustie😅
Certainly beats musty coffee!
Thums that’s right!
Daven Hiskey thanks Dave!
Definitely agree bud
The more I watch Mustie1’s videos I’ve come to realize something. No matter what condition of the project, whether it is a pile of junk parts, rusted beyond belief, or so ancient that parts are unavailable, it is never really broken once Mustie1 gets his hands on it. He always pushes the fix button or pulls on the repair rope and the previous pile of junk parts comes to life. I’ve said it more than once....”I wish he were my neighbor”. Always a good video, always entertaining, and as always, a satisfying ending.
Love the sound of those Kawi engines... Their motorcycle heritage shows through!
I use to make all the parts for them 10 years ago its weird seeing them again lol
I absolutely love how everyone takes it personal when someone hates on Mustie. That just means you have some loyal subscribers that really enjoy your content and videos. We gotcha your back. Lol
Gotcha your back. Right.
Excellent, well done again! Looks like just what you need out there too.
The scenery at the end of the video is a nice touch.
Andrew Camarata had one of these in a rowboat to get to a little island once
That's a good video!!! Andrew and Levi are a crew!! Cody's learning!
Let’s go another great Sunday night here in Australia with mustie

Hello from Vancouver, Canada!
Hi From the Covid Capital of Australia "Melbourne"!!!
MrSmitten I’m lucky over here in nsw
The best part of finding a new channel that’s awesome….you get to binge every video that’s been uploaded. Really appreciate this guy!
Always enjoy and look forward to your videos! Thanks!
Good morning folks!
Good morning!
I hope you picked up that boat trailer.More adventures with mustie.
Hi mustie loved this vlog and have watched a lot of your back videos they are great one thing for sure love the scenery when you always cutting the bushes/grasses bet it is lovely jurying the summer take care looking forward to the beast lot of repair vlogs😀👍
A very nice result!
Power transmission by "Peerless Gear Division of Tecumseh" - Nice, no nonsense gearbox, easy to work on and parts easy to get, but rarely ever have problems. Their differential axles never give any trouble at all. All-in-all, very similar to our Hayter Condor, and the exact same power train. Built like tanks and will go forever. You dropped lucky with this machine - very nice.
Now, I can't speak for the DR, but Hayter made/make a range of different headers for their machines, and a trailer-seat so that you can ride behind. We even built a few attachments of our own, just to extend its usefulness.
That clacky noise? You should hear our JD lawn tractor when it starts up (Kawasaki motor), but it runs as sweet as a nut once it's started. I think it's the automatic decompression mechanism that makes all that clacky noise.
Me likey this machine very much!
WOOOHHOOOO caught this right off the bat for the first time :) love the vids Mustie
Enjoy!
@@mustie1 always do :D

A really great video thank you for sharing so much I learned and I’ve had a DR for 15 years and you show me more in your videos and I’ve seen in a long time so thank you and you’re right it is a tank and it will take down up to 3 inches of pine tree fabulous machine

Hope you enjoy

It’s funny, after working on different outdoor lawn equipment. It amazes me how companies use the same parts in different ways. Such as the transaxle being upside down vs how it’s setup on a riding mower.
l think most machines other then the frame are all off the shelf parts,
@@mustie1 yup its true for most consumer products.
@@mustie1 agree. its just cool to see.
My Family needs one these for our farm. Great Yard Sale find.
Good job Mustie. I think you probably got a great deal. Guess we’ll see when you do maintenance on the other ones. Thanks for sharing. 👍😁👉🇺🇸
For the FJ, if the shudder is at very light load, my guess would be torque converter shudder. You can try changing the fluid again, but you'd probably have to do it a few times to have an impact (temporary at that). As to how someone could tell if the drain and fill plugs have been removed, you beat me on that one - a former tech.
When using the Taryl mug you are supposed to call it a "carbutrator". lol.
nice work Darren. 👍 you certainly make my weekend.
Another great video, thanks for sharing Mustie1!
