... he had the preamp.. AND the master.. ALL THE WAY UP.. sitting right next to it.. WITHOUT EARPLUGS. Sweet mercy, you only get one pair of cilia!
Matthew Maneri What!? I COULDN’T HEAR YOU!
Right?! I like the Princeton cause it breaks up at more house volumes not gigging volumes 😂
My ac15 twins master volume stays dimed
Vox amps have a reputation for being loud for their power rating. I recently heard a sales guy say a Vox watt is a normal watt plus a chair to the face. Tickled me no end. 😂
John Cena from the top rope watt.
Great review, Ryan... I've got the ac15c1 and the '68 CPR... Both sure have their strengths. I find the Princeton more "set and forget" for me when I dial it in, and play more with the Vox to find new tones. I really love them both. Keep the vids coming, well done, sir!
Excellent demo!! I actually have an AC15 + Princeton Reverb that I run as a Dual amp setup. They compliment each other so well!
Exactly!!
Same thing I’m still aiming for. Have the VOX, hoping to score a Deluxe or Princeton Reverb to complete my stage rig.
agreed!
That fuzz through the Fender sounds incredible
They actually sounded great as a stereo rig, that's how I would use them. I would also experiment with a boost, overdrive, fuzz, delay to the Vox and modulation, delay and reverb to the Fender with each amp having its own looper. You could create different clean and dirty loops and play with delay set for different time and repeats or set one as reverse delay.
I think you inspired me to buy another amp and try this out.
Nice comparison, I love both these amps, I own an ac15 c 1 and an old fender vibro champ, but would love a Princeton or deluxe Reverb, its good to have different flavors depending on your mood,Just like guitars,I can go for months on a tele or strat and then go back to a les Paul, and as odd as it looked ,both amps sounded great together as someone mentioned earlier, thanks for the video 👍
Awesome! You'd be surprised how hard it was to find a video that displayed the reverb comparison between these two amps. Love the reverb on the Fender, but the tremolo on the Vox is amazing.
Loved the demo! I play the VOX ac15 AND a Fender Cyber Twin and use an A/B switch and play them together. I love how they complement each other, clean or driven with pedals
Excellent, highly useful comparison. Thumbs up for you sir(s)!
Playing them together with an ABY or something like a Strymon Deco is the way to go for sure!
I think what's interesting about the Vox tremolo is that it takes the standard Vox tone (that otherwise sounds much too thin to my ear), adds some low end and warmth to create something much more pleasing as a result.
I actually really like the normal Channel on the vox. I find that it takes to fuzzes and OD better. If I use the top boost, it's just by itself. No pedals in front.
I think "better" is subjective here, I prefer how the fender handles fuzzes though i tend to dial them brighter.
Yeah, what Mark said. Using the normal channel is great to keep things darker and less jangly/bright. I only use it with pedals, and only use the top boost by itself. Same with ac30s, I use the low input with pedals so i can eq and level things out easier, and the high input when just using the amp.
That vox gets my blood up. Awesome.
Damn! the ac15 goes to work where the Princeton finishes, it’s a proper rock band in a box.
ps- Princetons have bias vary trem- if you biased the amp cooler you would increase the depth- the best part of bias vary is you can play through the trem (meaning all your transients stay in tact and the trem takes a back seat every time you hit a note and then comes out as the voltage goes down- this makes it a very musical an useful effect)
I've got both amps. It really is great having both amps. I let my mood tell me which to use.
Very useful comparison. Nice. Thanks for sharing!
I have both. Your description at the start is spot on!
But the differences in the video do convey the drastic differences in these two amps!
I'm in love with the vox. Thanks for the comparison
okay im running these together, that ending jam sounded amazing
I enjoyed this demo. These are two wonderful amps. The AC15c1 however is an improvement over the AC15cc1. The c1 has a Top Boost channel, a tone cut dial, improved reverb, and a Green Back speaker. The cleans in the Top Boost channel of the c1 are just incredible.
Compare reverb
Great demo. Sounded awesome in stereo. Whats the fuzz you used? Was it a wampler velvet?
Ryan I'm not sure exactly how the tone stack on the ac15 works, but I have an ac30cc2 and if you crank the treble on the top boost, it scoops the mids and gets very fender. Other than that I love how you can get such diverse tones from the two. If I had to take score, vox wins for drive, and the Princeton wins for reverb and tremelo
Great video! I'm really biased towards the Vox Ac15 cc1. Thanks a lot!
Very good comparison, thanks.
Great Video Thanks for Posting, gave you a thumbs up. Wish I kept my "65" Princeton - (purchased in the 60's). Larry if your watching, you can always bring it back, I won't charge you rental fees if you don't charge me storage fees......
thank you for making this video, I am looking for a clean amp, and now i know what to look for.
what did u get
@@keithclark486 damn that sucks. What amp was it
How can anyone choose between these two, other than which one is best suited to the style you are currently playing. Both really great amps.
I’ve used vox ac15s for years so I’m biased. They’re both great amps for very different reasons but the Vox is more versatile for my setup. I’m like you as well, Ryan. I play my Vox live with the master almost dined and the gain at around nine. Everything is mic’d and we’re on iems so I don’t need my amp to out run the drummer. Nice cleanish platform and pedals to taste.
I’d like to see the vox ac with that reverb from a Princeton
¿Por qué los dos no? That's hilarious! How about a Fender 65 twin vs 68 twin custom comparison? I enjoy your posts and your channel!!
i have both these amps... I have the tone control on the vox at 3oclock, its just too bright, but it sounds amazing.
You're a brave man to crank the AC15 right next to you with no ear protection! Also: what modulation/delay or combination thereof are you using around minute 17? that sounds GODLY
Tc tailspin vibe and probably my dd-6 for delay, after that i throw on the chase bliss gravitas as a tremolo.
Both would have benefited from an alnico speaker (Alnico Blue on the Vox, Jensen P10N on the Princeton). It just makes those amps magical...
Seems like you normally use a lot of bass, remember that the Vox has an interactive EQ. When you have the bass on full you're cutting a lot of the mids out. And a Vox is basically mids and treble. The bass on half all the way to full isn't much difference anyways. I've had mine for about 3 years now and I'd say optimum is treble at 11 o clock and bass at 1 o clock
Anyways this video convinced me to get a Princeton. Thanks
Got One and Love It. Better then Expected. 65 Princeton Reverb Reissue. Sounds Fantastic.
That is very close to where I use mine. Even in the normal channel, I leave the bass + treble 10 and 2 and the top boost volume at 10. Then the effects bleed over into the normal channel
looking at both, i trade my ac 30 with blues for a usa deville,, probably a loss but the vox need some fixing. there is a ac15 for 300 on craigs and avprinceton for 650, any suggestions?
Hi, excellent review, is the Princeton with the stock soeaker C10 R? Is it properly broken in? Thanks.
You have to allot time to work intensively to set your Vox to a tone that matches your preference because they're incredibly versatile and sensitive to even the slightest knob adjustment.Vox amps are not a plug-in and play amplifier. Also, achieving that Fender warmth is possible if you learn to master the eq and tone cut knobs. Other tricks, such as the ability to bleed the signal from the top boost channel into the normal channel, widen the AC15's sonic range. Run a Catalinbread DLS iii through it to make things interesting.
I've always thought that acs sound horrible when I play them
The AC15CC1 is a good amp, but no cut control. I've owned both and much prefer the AC15C1 to the CC1 in every respect. I suggest trying one if you get the chance. The AC15C1 sent all my vintage blackface Fenders out the door.
Is that a pedal at 18 mins?? Great sounds
I have an ac15 twin coming tomorrow I can't wait to run it stereo with my deville
The Princeton Reverb has been my faverite amp
For 20 years and still is . That is just where my bias is and the vox isn't in the running.
Y’know, the breakup on the right AC30 is magical. The perfect description of “crunchy”.
What guitar are you playing? Thanks for posting. I’m probably buying the vox and plan on dropping an alnico blue in it. Always wondered how it handled pedals.
Eddy H the guitar is a titan by Kauer guitars
Together they conquer the world. Perfect match...
Princeton all the way. Remember the PRRI always sounds waay better up on a chair etc..Am with ya as I gig and play my PRRI at home as well.Luvn it
I feel like the negative feedback dampens the sound... I just can’t be comfortable with that sound, though it’s not terrible.
I'd love to hear your band!
YES
USE THEM BOTH
Wow.. That Vox just really puts that Fender to shame.. I was not expecting that
Ryan, what are your favorite surfy reverb pedals? Also, which speaker are you using in the Princeton? Thanks.
Stock speaker, I tend to favor the Topanga and the FRV-1 for surf reverb.
Hey Ryan, sorry if I missed this in the video, but what exact speaker is in the VOX ? I am in the hunt for a AC15, and understand there is a little difference between the C1 and the CC1. let me know in the speaker question if you can, thanks !
it says ac15cc1 every time he plays on it
youre getting more for the money with the vox no doubt. Just a great amp which without any pedals is way more versatile and thats coming from a fender guy. All I play is fender but Ive owned both and if I was forced to only having 1 guitar and 1 amp only I'd choose a teley and ac15.
A vox won't have nearly the bass as many other amps, and I think that's partially why the breakup is so nice on them. Your pedals need to be completely readjusted when swapping between amps as well. Finally, you don't need to go deaf to get the tone. Drop that volume a bit!
Nice, amps I am considering, so thanks !! Question: did you ever experience a rattle or buzz in the Princeton? I had it with a '68 Princeton Reverb Reissue I tried in a shop, then I went online and there was all sorts of reports on cabinet rattles and buzzes. So curious as to whether you had any of that with the '65 since you say it was your working horse. Thanks in advance for a reply !!
ive never experienced a rattle or a buzz
@@60CycleHumcast Thanks for the reply !!
VOX fuzz seems like it would hold definition mixed.
Ryan, what year is your Princeton? Did it come with the tilt back stand? The new ones don't have tilt back.
I put the tilt back legs on it. It’s at least 10 years old
I have my home made Matchless SC30 clone (very Vox with EF86 &TB channels) and a 65 Princeton Reverb RI. You’ll find each one has its own quite different uses.
Great video dude … both amps are awesome , but I if i had to choose just one … VOX ac15c1 .
vox had one good setting all out- other than that the fender cleans are way fuller (ps when you dime a fenders volume you cut back on the bass)
lol.. your neighbors love you.. i just ordered that PR.. I have an AC15 too.. and an ABY.. i cant wait to get evicted. that sounded great.. great vid.
Hahhahha man that made me laugh..EVICTED 😂😂😂😭
Why Choose between ? Use Both Wet Dry .
As someone else said... Use that "tone cut" on the vox. It's there for a reason. And, use the normal channel, but still play with the top boost eq. As it is still somewhat usable even if you're using the normal channel. The AC15 hack.
I think a better comparison would be one of the fender deluxe reverbs. (IMO). about same cabinet size and that makes a difference. The little Princeton can’t compete with the AC15... but a recording or bedroom level it would outshine the Vox. I don’t have either. I play a ‘87 Fender Studio 85 red knob solid state. Superb cleans and loud as heck. I sold my other amps because I was spending too much time noodling with amps and dialing in the “perfect” tone instead of playing music.
The Vox for days, Fender is very nice but I love the Vox sound. Disclaimer, I have an AC10c1. Nice small amp.
Hey it's a dump questions, but it is loud enough to stay clean when you are playing with an drummer?
Want to upgrade from a transistor amp but I have no clue about the loudness of this amps.
@@bergglobus2428 no
Vox all the way.. I use a Tonebender and Mosrite with mine and it sounds glorious...
Too boost volume can only be used with top boost channel right?
Dalton Heitmann I've got an ac15. Use an a/b splitter on that bad boy and you can go from top boost to clean and both at the same time. It's a great amp!!!
I just read your question correctly lol yes... Top boost volume only works on the top boost channel. Sorry bout that man lol my bad
No, actually you can use the top boost volume/ eq on the normal channel. It doesn't have a huge effect, but it does change the sound. In the normal channel, the volume of the top boost effects how much of a difference the bass and treble affect the normal channel. Look it up "AC15 hack".
Hey man have you ever used a Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue? Trying to decide between a Princeton or a Deluxe. I already have an AC15, so I want one of those two to run in stereo
Daniel Sentrik I had a deluxe reverb for awhile (I forget the exact model). I opted to keep the Princeton and sell the deluxe because I like how warm the Princeton is and I love it's reverb. The deluxe has clearer cleans and grittier dirt which lots of people love.
Daniel Sentrik Hi. Did you do it? How do you like it? I'm looking to use that exact pair of amps. Just found a good price on an AC15C1. Hunting for a deluxe reverb.
I'm actually favoring the Vox AC15
In this video, I like the Vox better and I'm a Fender player. The Princeton seemed to have too much bass/mush when pushed. The Vox seemed more clear/focused and held together better. In a "band gig" setting the Vox may sit better with it's less bass characteristics. Great video, thanks !
You can turn the bass down on the Princeton lol. Rule of thumb with fender amps are the more you crank them the less bass you need on the knob.
I think a lot of people don’t understand that bass frequencies take a lot of power. So the louder you crank the amp the more small amplifiers will sag trying to keep up with all that bass. So you need to turn the bass down to keep the overdrive smooth. Marshall’s tend to cut a lot of bass frequencies to keep the drive smooth cranked.
Playing solo? Fender. In a band? Vox. Or, get both for a wet/dry set up, personally if I were doing that I'd get a deluxe reverb instead for clean headroom on those wet signals
The Vox all day!
i love that whenever anybody talks shit in these youtube comments you seem to just legitimately not care, its awesome. you're my favorite guitar channel on youtube, you can you're always having a good time and it makes me want to go do the same. rock on dude.
How do you set your palisades?
I set it different every time, and thats why i love it. If you have OD ADD like me then its a perfect pedal.
They both sound good, however the Vox sounds really good cranked all out, however my love for Rory Gallagher could be clouding my judgement
Princeton sounds good, but the Vox takes it home
is the Princeton the 65 ri or 68 ri ? the 65 ri is usually biased hotter as it is needed for the tremolo to sound its best. also tube swaps are really noticable with the 65 ri. the ac15 sounds best clean to me. i think both amps have an internal reverb gain adjustment (handy if you want to try different tube types for the reverb). i know for sure that the Princeton ri tremolo sounds dramatically different as you alter the bias. thanks for the cool comparison.
I have the 65, i might need to get in there and tweak the bias for fun.
I didn't hear you say anything about speakers. The Vox comes with a 12, the Princeton can come with either 10 or 12. Even is size is the same they still don't have the same type of speakers. I have a 12" Princeton. It takes an overdrive pedal supremely.
What is that gorgeous gold colored guitar over your shoulder?! 😀
hallmark swept wing, its awesome.
I've had a princeton since about 68.Just replaced the speaker with new italian made jensen.Better than the original. These amps like to be on 2 up to about 7.Anybody know where ib can get a footswitch?
Call Fender and order one
Is there any chance you'll do a Princeton 68 RI vs AC15? (either Greenback or Alnico) thanks!! :)
I ended up selling the ac15 (it was so damn heavy!) Id love more princetons in my life but I cant see it happening anytime soon.
@@60CycleHumcast Sure now with how things are going in the world.. thank you for the video though :)
@@60CycleHumcast liar
Both sound good to me. If you play out alot, let your back help decide for you. I have a 90s Korg/Marshall era AC15 and that thing weighs nearly 50 lbs!
Kind of unrelated, but what is that black guitar in the back?
no_sois mim duo sonic
Thanks!
Dude the vox sounds better. It’s probably hard to let go of what you’ve been used to
What guitar is he using?
Ryan, you mentioned that although you like the sound of both amps rigged together it is an "ungiggable rig" for you. Why not? There has to be a way to mic up a two-amp rig in any gig setting without driving a sound man crazy...
princeton for sure
I have a 10” Eminence Red Fang in my Fender Princeton Ri the speaker sensitivity is 103 and it improves the headroom but I’m thinking of outing my Celestion Blue in it but I’m not sure it would be better sounding
Also.....how did your ears not fall off....😂
It helps to not have the amps aimed at my head, and I make the full volume parts pretty short and rare.
Have that same shirt. Bought in Hawaii.
Nice job Ryan, who makes that guitar?
its a Titan by Kauer Guitars
Los dos, con certeza.
Neither amp is as loud as that shirt
🤣
I feel like my vox amp lets the guitar sound like the guitar. I always feel like i am fighting too much bass and too shrill highs on my Fender amps. Many of my favorite sounds by other artists are coming from a fender amp. I dont know how they get such a balanced tone
I have the opportunity to buy either a Vox ac15c1 or a Vox ac30s1 for the same price. I know the 30 is more vox for the money but the 15 sounds so good. Im leaning towards the 15 but it nags me that for the same price i could have a 30. Anybody have experience with the 30? Also in the beginning of this vid the princeton sounded brighter to me.
the 30 is not good for home use. you aren’t gonna get as good of a sound if you have to turn it down. the only time you get the best sound is performing in a relatively large venue or outdoor venue. if your performing indoors at a small-medium venue then the 15 is probably a better choice
@@peopledonotexist Im out in the country and get fairly loud. But the 15 has always sounded better to my ears. Im going to start recording my own stuff and others. I would like to have a basic selection of amps.
Worth noting the Princeton is about twice the price of the vox depending on model.
Not everywhere. Vox more expensive in some countries because beatlemania
Late to the party but I’m looking at both of these amps. The Fender sounds kind of boxy, I much prefer the Vox, I think it would fit my playing style better
whats the speaker in that vox?
its the stock speaker for an AC15cc1
Celestion greenback 25 watts.
What guitar is he using in this video?
Titan by Kauer
princeton for studio stuff , vox for band context
