    I prefer these sonatas on viola. Brahms adored the viola....as do I. His Op. 91 should be heard more often too!

      Neven played either sonata (Op. 120, Nos. 1 & 2) with a violist before, but this superb recoding shows that
      Brahms was not just trying to boost sales. The viola songs are indeed gems; the viola's use of the Christmas carol "Josef lieber, Josef mein" (Joseph dearest, Joseph mine) in the second was a truly inspired touch. I would absolutely love to hear Amihai play them.

    This is lovely, Beautiful sounding in all respects. Around 17:58 something extra special happens to the sound, something magical, that just took my breath away--as if the room itself purred. The complicity between violist and pianists, equals in this work, is superb--their re-entry at about 17:09 is perfectly calibrated, so tender and expressive... My old teacher had a Gasparo da Salo viola, unlikely that it's this one, but the sound of those instruments in the hands of players who can handle them, oh myyyyyyy....... Thank you to the players, to GdS, and to Brahms. We are so lucky to be able to come on CZcams and hear such glories.

    • @liamnevilleviolist1809
      @liamnevilleviolist1809 Před 3 lety +3

      @@aviolist1414 hahaha. Whenever people ask me "how's the violin career going?" I just reply "going strong thanks." I don't correct them, because when you break down the terminology, etymology, and even translations of the word "violin' into foreign languages it's easy just to think of the instrument as an "alto violin". I'm fine with that. Dutch: violin=viool , viola=altoviool. Can't argue with that!
      Also: your CZcams name is "A Violist" and mine is my name plus "...Violist" yet I don't play the viol. Do you? ;P
      I *did* take your original comment as a joke though, don't worry, I'm not *that* stupid. I just felt like commenting many many many words to start a dialogue :)

    • @DCBfanboy
      @DCBfanboy Před 3 lety

      @@liamnevilleviolist1809 In France we say "alto", which is short for "violon alto", "violon" meaning "violin" ! Isn't the viola an alto violin like the cello is a bass violin though?

    • @liamnevilleviolist1809
      @liamnevilleviolist1809 Před 3 lety

      @@DCBfanboy Yes, so if what you're saying is that "alto" is short for "violon alto" in French then yes, calling it an "alto" for short is good.
      Would it ever be called "violon d'alto?
      If so, that's how I translate it into English:
      Violin of alto, or violin of treble.
      So when people say "nice violin playing" I say thank you, and in my head I complete the phrase "violin" with ..."of alto", rather than yelling "IT'S A DAMN VIOLA!" like a few of my younger students do hahah.
      Also careful, because there *is* a bass violin which is *not* a cello.
      It is slightly larger than an alto or tenor viola, held and bowed between the knees like a cello. The thinness of the neck is the same as a viola as well, and the f-holes are about the same size. It is tuned an octave below the treble (standard) violin.

    • @liamnevilleviolist1809
      @liamnevilleviolist1809 Před 3 lety

      There's not much about it on the internet, but I will post a video on it in a couple of days :)
      I went to Italy a couple of years ago and bought a large book on a collection of violins, violas, and all the variations!
      Quite fascinating to see all the different types of instruments that haven't survived in popularity today !
