    Welcome back to UEBS 2! Today I command my army to hold up in a giant castle. Why? Because we need to if we are going to survive and defend it from an endless force! Soldiers to your stations! This one is going to get interesting.

    It seems to be an issue with the fact that trajectory isn't a thing in the game since the catapults and archers were not firing over the walls, making castle sieges feel less impactful.

    This honestly does show just how hard it is to actually take a castle. There's a reason that assaults usually only happened late into sieges when the defenders and their defenses are weak. If you breached the wall and tried to pour your men through it, it would be a slaughterhouse. Despite being outnumbered 20:1 sometimes during a siege and even higher, those odds are still very favorable for the defender.

    • @crazy922blade
      @crazy922blade Před 2 lety +20

      True, defending arrows would rain down like… well, rain. No doubt there would be defender casualties but the attacking army would be absolutely mowed down, no contest. Unless you could sneak an entire army into the castle in the dead of night, like the story of the Trojan horse, then you’d have to have thousands of men to take it. To add on top of that, war is unpredictable. There was a quote from a game called Kingdom Come: Deliverance where a lad who wanted to learn swordplay from his father got denied and his father said, ‘I could teach you swordplay, you could step outside of the house and someone shoots you with a crossbow’. There is truth to that. You could send you right hand man to lead the charge and he could have burning tar poured all over him and set on fire. Then your soldiers’ morale would be lowered, therefor greatly lowering you chance for victory.

      The main purpose of castle defences were primarily to allow a small group of Soldiers defend long enough for backup from your Lord/Liege to arrive and help fight off the invaders.
      Unfortunately a well defended castle alone won’t be enough to beat an army that outnumbers you 10-1, They could easily surround the city and wait until everyone starves if they know you don’t have any backup coming.
      Regardless, castles were super effective at repelling invasions.

    • @rebelgaming1.5.14
      @rebelgaming1.5.14 Před rokem +1

      @@aaa-sz9ul and that's the hard truth. As formidable as defenses can be, if no one comes to relieve them they'll eventually have to capitulate. While castles and fortresses could hold out for years on end (even decades). In the end you're still going to lose eventually without help. The best chance people have at holding the defenses is just to make the siege so costly for the attacker that they have to break it off.

    Most medieval castle sieges were only 20 to one (Attackers to defenders). Also there was a "Flying company" of about 100-200 soldiers who would go to trouble spots and plug holes in the line. Also you may want to have "Reinforcement company" come in (Much like Gandalf in LOTR) from the opposite side of the Field to arrive in time. Gandalf went and found the Rohirrm (2000) calvary.
    Now, since you want an epic story of 1000 defenders against 100000 attackers. Then put 50 archers with 100 heavy knight on each flank with 5 catapults. Since there are four ways to come into the castle...This will protect the 750 archers, 700 heavy knights and 80 catapults to defend the main gate. Do not put any knights outside the gates.
    I would try this myself but my computer sucks. Cannot handle the program.
    As said in the beginning most sieges held to 20:1 odds in favor of the defender. Since you have 100:1 odds. It is now in the favor of the attackers. Also Sieges usually have their own siege engines.
    Just saying

      @@tigerboy4705 Maybe. They already have a teleport feature on the Greece map to get in and out of the arena. Just have the entity ignore walls (maybe even buildings, if they're the same type of structure) when setting its pathing, and once it encounters a wall or building it activates its teleport feature, teleporting units walking into it up in front of the drop deck (maybe keep the teleportation to a cool-down of 1 every half-second).

    I truly think if you had maybe 40 catapults on the walls, maybe sixty archers on the inside of the castle, then mostly heavy knights for reserves and flank coverage, you definitely could’ve won that. I think the problem was that you had too many ranged units and not enough melee. I think that the heavy knights were doing better than the catapults, mainly because at least the heavy knights were capable of taking on several opponents without just keeling over, whereas the catapults had little chance against several units swarming them. Same with the archers, it mostly has to do with attack speed. They couldn’t attack fast enough to keep the flood of opponents from coming, and they couldn’t tank hits enough to kill an active threat that was too close

      I think the heavy knights should protect the catapults, as the catapults could do more damage but they were just vulnerable from the flank. The archers did kinda suck though.
