Gustave Dore is one of my favorite artists
The greatest illustrator of all time. As italian I love his works about the "Divine Comedy" and the "Orlando Furioso" but I like very much the illustrations about "Paradise Lost", "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "the Raven" too. A true visionary genius.
I love his works in Don Quixote :)
I've been watching wood carving art and the G.Doré was everywhere. I had to check and....wow!!!! What a genius.
Awesome story! After seeing one of his works in the brazilian edition of "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque" i instantly felt the need to search more about him.
+Matheus Marques That's awesome! I'm constantly amazed at the places his works turn up!
Great info and delivery, Bookworm. Thank you!

I am working on a research from university about this excellent artist and I found your video very useful. I've seen it several times not only because the content is complete, also because your pronuntiation is clear and I understood every thing you said, and this fact helps me a lot because I'm studying english as well. Thank you very much!
+Julia A.S Thank you so much! I'm glad my video could help you out! I adore Gustave Doré, but these days he's largely overlooked; it's wonderful to hear people are still researching him and his work!
Very interesting video. Definitely one of the most inspiring artists ever.
Sir, I know this was years ago. But thank you so much for this video and what you did. I became absolutely fascinated with his work and hope to be as good as him. Thank you.
Well done. Thank you for sharing some of your wisdom. I appreciate it. God bless.
Your voice and lecture are amazing! They're definetely podcast material
Definitely Podcast Material!
Awesome video! Im from Brazil, watching you!
Thank you for this good informations about Gustave Doré. To my great pleasure I received a great Doré Bible in two volumes (very heavy!) with the German Text of Martin Luther, 120 years old
@@dankuneasewaybill333 Dear Friend. Thank you very much for your answer and I learned something about the New Cambridge Family Chronicle Bible, saw the film about this Bible. I think you've found a very great Bible. Best wishes.
Excellent video. Brilliant lesson. Fascinating subject. Well delievered. I will return for more.
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
is fabulous history..
I saw his work ´enigma´ in paris last summer. I was obsessed about how much of a story could be told with mere black and white, it was beautiful.
Thanks man! Great summary! I only knew of Gustave Doré after being interested in The Divine Comedy after reading "Inferno" by Dan Brown. I didn't know he had such an eventful life as an artist.
This was very informative! Thanks for this video. I just started getting into art and I happened upon Dore's work by chance, but I loved it so much I wanted to find out more about him. I now have several reprints of his work.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I hadn't heard anything about Gustave Doré before either but I'm glad I did just now! Awesome! Totally enjoyed the vid as always.
+the3spoonsOFsugar Thanks very much! I only knew him through his engravings before this, but as it turns out he was a fascinating character!

+ilpezkato I'm glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
Fantastic Cliff Notes style documentary on this accomplished artist.
I recently rented The 1891 life of Gustav Doré illustrated book by Blanchard Jerrold.
Originally borrowing the book for the illustrations, your video helped to bring his story to life!
Just picked up an original Dore steel etching today of Paradise Lost, love it. Thanks for the great history.
How much was that? Sounds expensive
I'm interested in knowing the cost as well as I have taken an interest in his work and would one day love to own an original (if you don't mind sharing)
What’s crazy is the years he worked THESE DRAWINGS COULD BLOW PEOPLE AWAY TODAY LIKE WTFFFF !!!!
Love this vlog, Dan. Excellent. Not sure of the exact year(s), but I imagine on some level, Dore's interface with the prickly art critics possibly foreshadowed Le Salon des Refuses, or conceivably helped pave a path, maybe minimally inspiring independent new art movements. Poor Dad, an engineer, having to put up with his son's artistic malarkey, lol.
Thanks so much! I'm sure he did. While not belonging to a "school", per se, he certainly forged his own path, seperate from the establishment.
• Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
+Grudgin 1 Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you !!!!!! 👏🏾💚👏🏾
You're very welcome! I'm glad you liked it!
Fascinating story, I didn't know much about him and I was glad to learn. Will have to check out your podcast; you put out good content
+Knowledge Lost Thanks! I've been a huge fan of his engravings for years but never knew there was so much more to his story until I started working on this.
The podcast is still in its infancy. Currently I'm just converting the youtube episodes into podcast format, but I'm working on some "podcast only" stuff for the future.
+BookwormHistory this format would work really well as a podcast. I have subscribed
Great channel
Thanks. Very interesting. Not a lot on Dore on youtube.
Excellent. Very informative
+patience fox Thanks very much!
:)
Great video. It is incredibly I was needing information about life and career about Doré and in spanish is so difficult to find some book about him... Thank you.
+Sara Fuentes I'm glad my video could help! Thanks for watching!
the german writer Walther Moers (who is just awesome btw) wrote a book called "a wild journey through the night" which i highly recommend to anyone, he took 12 illustrations of Gustave Dore and wrote a story that kind of combines them or lets say he wrote around those pictures and the result is genius! its designed for younger readers but any adult will love it too, i read it within 6 or 7 hours without pause, he named the protagonist Gustave :)
Gustave dore fantástico...gostaria que ele vivesse hoje em dia e ilustrasse obras de hoje em dia
hey what can be really interesting to read to understand his history ?
Where has this channel been all my life? I enjoyed your lecture very much. How do you choose your material?
+Benny Palma Thanks very much, I'm glad you liked it! I choose topics in any number of ways. Sometimes it's a work whose story I'm already a little familiar with, sometimes (like this Doré episode) it's topics that I have a little interest in and as I learn more I put together an episode, sometimes ("Kubla Khan") it's viewer requests. I keep a list of potential topics which I add to as much as I can and when it looks like I have enough info to make a video about it I'll really focus on that subject.
a real genius
Do you know something more about his parents as well as about the character of Gustave Dore?
You're so cool :D I really loved your video and well... I have to say that your nose is beautiful I mean really. greatings from México
You have reached the silk worm in the Family..

they put that skeleton on a shirt and i f*cking love it !!!!! the other day someone was like "i like your shirt" and i was like ahh... (I wanted to say Gustave Dore but i couldnt remember the name. lol)
What process does he use for the Dante series (black and white illustrations)?
+NME10E Hello! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Doré used wood engraving on his "Inferno" series. He produced the drawings himself, then handed them off to an engraver, who would engrave the design onto a woodblock, which would be used in the printing. Doré was notoriously picky of which engravers he worked with, as the engraver has significant input into the final piece and Doré was very protective of his work. For "Inferno", as well as "Don Quixote", Doré used engraver Héliodore Pisan. It is Pisan's signature (as "H.Pisan") that can be seen in the "Inferno" prints, along with Doré's (in most cases in one of the lower corners of the pictures).
Hope that helps! Later in his career Doré did used metal plates, rather than wood, as the metal lasts longer.
BookwormHistory this is more information than I could have dreamed of, thanks a ton!
you wont belive me but gustave dore is my grandpa so im his greatx10 grandson
